I'm Trying To Go Broke, So Why Do I Keep Getting Richer?!-Chapter 199: I accept
"Did we accidentally start a cult while I was asleep?"
Leo was quite taken aback. When he went to sleep, everything appeared to be normal. He was being addressed like the leader of the Alpha Corp, but there was no crazy term like Supreme Leader or even close to that.
He didn’t know why, but he had a really bad feeling about this for some reason. Especially with the looks that he was receiving from the people around him.
They had the same level of respect, but there was something more hidden in that gaze.
Just as he was lost in thoughts, the Branch Manager stepped forward, and told him, "Earth has accepted your proposal. There was no resistance."
’No resistance? Why would there be resistance for free security being provided?’ Leo inwardly thought, growing even more confused.
"The document of surrender has already been sent to you. I assume you haven’t checked that yet?" The Branch Manager asked, wondering if Leo was still sleepy to appear so confused.
"Document of Surrender?" Leo picked his communicator, only to notice that his communicator was almost overwhelmed.
There were hundreds, or maybe thousands of unread messages from a variety of people.
As for the document, it was marked as a priority, and was sent to him by the Hero Tower.
He opened the document of surrender, and went through it. With each passing sentence, his expressions turned more and more solemn.
’What the heck is this? Am I crazy or has this world gone crazy? Why are they suddenly declaring me as the Overlord of Earth?’
Leo scratched the back of his head, his expressions shifting between shock and confusion.
He wondered if the leaders of earth were so happy by his selfless actions of protecting earth that they were willing to hand over the entire planet to him? Were they really so grateful?
He didn’t realize that the leaders of earth were far from grateful to him. If anything, they were inwardly crying when they signed this document.
They were more or less worried about their safety, and sighed under duress, believing him to be a great villain.
"Although it’s a little surprising, I suppose I can accept their goodwill. It isn’t as if this would derail my future plans. It might even help me in the long run."
He kept the communicator back in his pocket, and told the team to arrange another live broadcast for him to address the public.
In the meantime, he was granted the task of replying to the congratulatory message to his dear branch manager, sending everyone who had congratulated him a personal message to thank them.
Within a few hours, Leo was again live, something that he hadn’t prepared for when he went to sleep last night.
As for his address, it felt like a sharp mockery to the world leaders.
Leo stood before the floating camera drone. In his mind, he was being a gracious business partner. In the eyes of the terrified world leaders watching from their bunkers, he looked like a predator playing with its food.
"I must admit," Leo said, his voice echoing across every screen on the planet, "I was quite taken aback when this responsibility was placed on my shoulders so... suddenly."
"I had merely intended to provide a modest security detail to ensure our shared prosperity. But to be offered this? It is a heavy burden."
Across the globe, the former President of the Allied Nations choked on his coffee.
’Offered?!’ he screamed internally. ’You parked a moon-sized fleet on our heads and said that you would clean us up! You evil bastard, you can still pretend? They say that we politicians are shameless, but we are nothing before you! You can still pretend with a straight face?!’
Leo, completely oblivious to the misinterpreted threat, continued with a soft smile.
"To the leaders who reached out with such ’enthusiasm’ and ’unanimous’ support, thank you. Your willingness to step aside for the greater good of Alpha Corp... I mean, for the greater good of Earth... is the proof of your selfless character."
"I have reviewed your requests for ’retirement,’ and I find them most reasonable. In fact, I insist you enjoy your peace. You’ve earned a very, very long break from public life."
To Leo, this was a generous ’thank you for the promotion’ speech. To the politicians, it sounded like a polite way of saying, ’If I see your face in a government building again, I’ll have you sent to a permanent vacation in the afterlife.’
"As for the people of Earth," Leo’s expression warmed, "do not be afraid of this transition. My goals are simple... To help earth and people everywhere as much as I can, continuing my brother’s legacy!"
"Under Alpha Corporation’s guidance, we will no longer be a divided collection of nations, but a unified planet. Consider me not as your Overlord, but as your Chief Executive. My door is always open... figuratively speaking, of course. I am quite busy."
He gave a small, charming nod and signaled for the feed to cut.
The moment the red light died, Leo slumped against the podium, wiping a bead of sweat from his temple.
"Phew. That was a lot," he said to the Branch Manager, who was looking at him. "Do you think that sounded okay? I didn’t want to sound too arrogant, but I also didn’t want to seem like I didn’t appreciate the ’gift’ they gave me."
"Sir," the Branch Manager said, "It was perfect. The way you thanked them for ’stepping aside’... the subtle reminder that their retirement is ’mandatory’ for their own safety... it was the most elegant threat I’ve ever heard in my twenty years in the industry."
Leo blinked. "Threat? What threat? I was literally thanking them for the severance packages they asked for. It’s a lot of money, you know. We’re being very generous."
"Of course, sir. Generous," the Manager winked, clearly thinking he was in on the joke. "I’ve already coordinated with the Hero Tower. He’s currently ’escorting’ the former leaders to their new retirement villas."
