I'm Trying To Go Broke, So Why Do I Keep Getting Richer?!-Chapter 203: Not giving any face
"I am certain that everyone can differentiate reality from falsehoods. So it would really be a waste of the Court’s time to go through with this case in all seriousness. But still, I would let Your Lordships decide..."
The man stepped back, returning to his seat. Although he didn’t speak for long, he had already somewhat convinced a few people that they might actually be innocent.
Not only did he threaten Leo in public, but he also expressed his eagerness to catch the real culprit, making it evident that they really didn’t know the person’s whereabouts.
The judges noted down something, before shifting their focus to Leo.
"Who will be representing your side?" the Chief Justice asked, his gaze shifting at the two lawyers that were sitting at Leo’s table.
They were hired by Alpha Corp, and they were also the ones that had prepared all the paperwork. They weren’t cheap either, but the Alpha Corp was able to afford them.
The leading Lawyer on Leo’s side adjusted his black robe as he slowly stood up. However, before he could even straighten his back, he heard the sound of a chair moving back.
He looked to his right, and saw that Leo had also stood up.
"What?!" He couldn’t help but exclaim, as surprised as everyone else in the audience.
"If you need to go to the toilet, then you should wait a little," he moved closer to Leo, and whispered, believing that Leo had stood up because he urgently needed to pee.
Leo looked at the highly-paid legal professional.
"Toilet? My sweet, innocent brother is missing, presumed to be killed by these people. You think I would stand up for something like that?" He whispered back. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Unfortunately for the lawyer, he whispered it just loud enough for the highly sensitive courtroom microphones to pick it up.
Leo gently but firmly pushed the man by the shoulder, forcing him back down into his plush seat. He patted the lawyer’s shoulder lightly, as if comforting a confused golden retriever, before turning to the towering Justices.
"Your Honors," Leo announced, his voice suddenly becoming heavier. "I will be speaking for myself. These fine, expensive gentlemen are merely here to manage the paperwork... and to provide me with emotional support during this tragic time."
Trent pinched the bridge of his nose, shaking his head lightly. Wasn’t the plan to let the lawyers represent them? Why did Leo change the plan suddenly?
’Is it because of that threat? Was it really that upsetting that he decided to take the stage himself?’ he rubbed his forehead, letting out a silent sigh.
"Are you certain? Although you have the right to represent yourself, but..."
"I am certain." Leo said, before the judge could even finish his sentence.
The judge clicked his tongue, expressing his frustration but he still agreed, "Permission granted."
Leo didn’t just stand at his table. He stepped out onto the polished marble floor, fully embracing the spotlight. He turned to face the smug man from the Watchdogs Headquarters.
"My friend here claims they have spent the equivalent of a branch’s yearly revenue searching for my brother," Leo began, pacing slowly. He raised a hand, ticking off points on his fingers for maximum theatrical effect.
He glanced at the Watchdog’s representatives, the corner of his lips creeping up. "I honestly didn’t expect them to expect so openly about their incompetence."
"What do you mean?! Are you insulting us?!" The man coldly asked, albeit while still remaining seated.
"Insulting? Isn’t that what you said yourself? Aren’t I repeating your own words?" Leo asked, still pacing back and forth, addressing the audience more than the judge. "I’m certain everyone here heard it just as well as me."
"What nonsense are you talking about? I never said that!" The man exclaimed.
"Is that so?" Leo pondered out loud. "If a specialized, highly-trained intergalactic task force cannot locate a single, notoriously unathletic boy with nowhere to run to, then what else can it mean except incompetence?"
"If even after spending so much money comparable to... How much was it? Ah, right, equal to your branch’s inflated budget. If even after all that, you can’t find him, then I respectfully suggest the Watchdogs be disbanded immediately for gross incompetence."
"It’s either you’re spectacularly incompetent, despite being so powerful, or you weren’t really trying to seriously find him in the first place because you already know where you are keeping him?"
"The defense also implies that I am hiding him. Your Honors, look at me. I am a busy man looking for his brother! I have a company to run, economies to stabilize, and incredibly expensive lawyers to hire! Do I look like I have the time to build a secret bunker for a fugitive?"
"And even if I somehow did, is Alpha Corp, a small organization in a weak space sector, strong enough to hide a man from the Watchdogs that are so powerful?"
"Only a fool would believe that. And my friend here expects you to believe it? Does he consider you a fool? Does he see your face and see an idiot who will fall for such lies? Is this the respect that judges hold in the eyes of Watchdogs?"
"I can’t believe that these people are insulting your intelligence. If I was in your place, I wouldn’t accept such insults! Only a fool would accept insults and not do anything. I’m certain no one here is a fool, right?"
As Leo finished, he cast an innocent glance at the judges.
Meanwhile, the judges simply stared blankly, wondering what had just happened. How were they suddenly proven idiots out of nowhere? What did they have to do with anything?
They didn’t even know who to be angry on? The Watchdogs, who had supposedly insulted their intelligence, or Leo who had highlighted this openly, not giving them any face.
They couldn’t even be certain if Leo’s words were for defending them, or insulting them? Something about his words stood out.
