Chapter 251: Called to Account

After a moment, the Emperor said, "Then you mean to say that you are without fault?"

Yue Mingxuan knelt helplessly and bowed his head. "Mingxuan does not believe he has committed a crime. At most, it may be said that his conduct lacked restraint. Mingxuan is like a guest invited to Beirong, only that this guest’s behavior is somewhat unrestrained. If the host is displeased, it is natural to speak of it, and even to choose not to invite this guest again in the future. But if, simply because the guest behaves freely, the host were to have him flogged, that would clearly fall short of the proper way to treat a guest..."

His words carried a certain logic.

The Emperor pondered for a while before asking again, "Then what do you think should be done?"

Yue Mingxuan studied the Emperor’s expression before answering carefully, "Mingxuan’s conduct may indeed be improper. If Your Majesty wishes to punish me, Mingxuan will accept it. But if this is used to determine guilt, then Mingxuan cannot accept it. Moreover, matters of the inner palace are often distorted by rumor. Affairs of the imperial family within the inner court are not to be discussed even by male relatives, how then could outside officials such as the censors presume to comment?"

The Emperor pondered for a long while before finally waving his hand to dismiss Yue Mingxuan.

After taking his leave, Yue Mingxuan stood at the doorway for quite some time, his brows knitted together in thought.

What exactly was Keshun Shanfeng trying to do? Was he attempting to drive a wedge between him and the Emperor?

After returning to his room, he sat there for a long time unable to settle his mind.

At last, he stood up, stretched lazily, and turned around.

"Sui He, I’m heading out for a bit, I’ll be back soon. For dinner, I want roast goose feet!" he called loudly toward the back as he lifted his robes and dashed out.

Just as he reached the entrance, he nearly collided with Gongsun Xing who was coming toward him.

"What’s the rush? Watch where you’re going," Gongsun Xing said with a gentle smile and steadying Yue Mingxuan.

Yue Mingxuan glanced up at him.

"I just remembered someone, the one who helped me catch rats in the prison. I’ll go wait for him at the clinic!" After tossing out a quick "We’ll talk when I get back," he ran off in a flash, leaving Gongsun Xing standing there, half amused and half exasperated.

Gongsun Xing had originally come to speak with him about matters concerning Silver Needle Sect.

He had already discussed things with Pan Lutong and they were preparing to send a letter back to the secr immediately to help gather some rare specimens for Yue Mingxuan.

Yet Yue Mingxuan had not given him a chance to speak at all.

Well, it could wait until later.

Returning to the clinic, Yue Mingxuan opened the doors and sat in the main hall for quite some time.

Noon passed, yet there was still no sign of the person he was waiting for.

Growing a little impatient, he tapped his fingers against the table, watching people come and go outside.

He yawned, then gradually dozed off with his head resting on the table.

"Hey! Hey, wake up!!"

A voice sounded from across the table.

Yue Mingxuan lifted his eyelids and saw Moonless Cicada sitting on the table looking at him. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Moonless Cicada grinned and pointed at the corner of his mouth.

Thinking he had drooled, Yue Mingxuan quickly wiped his lips and it was dry.

He shot Moonless Cicada an annoyed glare.

Moonless Cicada sat there laughing with one leg crossed over the other and casually chewing on a piece of lingzhi herb he had taken from Yue Mingxuan’s medicine cabinet, looking entirely at ease.

Yue Mingxuan glanced at his hand, then calmly spread his palm open in front of him.

"Dear guest, please pay up. This clinic does not extend credit. Will you be paying with jade or gold?" Yue Mingxuan said calmly.

Moonless Cicada: "..."

He rolled his eyes in disdain, then placed the remaining half of the lingzhi into Yue Mingxuan’s palm. "Come on, I caught rats for you in the prison for several days, didn’t I? You can’t repay kindness with ingratitude, burn the bridge after crossing it, or kill the donkey once the mill is done, Prince Yue!"

The string of idioms came out dripping with grievance, and the look in his eyes was practically accusing someone of abandoning a spouse.

With his right hand, he even lifted a delicate finger and pointed at Yue Mingxuan bit by bit.

Yue Mingxuan couldn’t hold it in and burst out laughing.

Shaking with laughter, he handed the lingzhi back to him.

"Fine, this time it’s on the house. But starting next time, I’ll be charging." After saying this, he paused, looking at Moonless Cicada joking around with him, and spoke with a hint of reflection. "I used to think assassins were either cold and ruthless or scheming and sinister. Look at Gu Xiang, you two are completely different."

Moonless Cicada rolled his eyes even harder.

"Can you not compare me to a second-rate assassin!"

"But aren’t you only ranked seventh?" Yue Mingxuan said innocently.

Moonless Cicada finally snapped and shouted, "It’s seventh seat, not seventh place!"

That day, Moonless Cicada still left in a huff.

Yue Mingxuan watched him go, finding him rather endearing, and even called after him that if anything came up in the future, he should drop by and he’d get a friendship discount.

It occurred to him that unless an assassin truly stood above the rest, they probably wouldn’t possess Moonless Cicada’s kind of carefree spirit.

After Moonless Cicada left, Yue Mingxuan felt a bit bored.

He glanced at the sky outside, it was about time, so he closed up and returned to the palace.

When he arrived in his courtyard, Sui He had already prepared a table full of sumptuous dishes.
