Incurable Pain | Chapter 14

Bai Xunyin was a young girl, and no matter how fast she ran, she couldn’t match the long-legged stride of a guy.

After rushing out of the teaching building, Yu Luoyin spotted the slender figure of the girl on the playground and quickly caught up with her.

He grabbed Bai Xunyin’s arm from behind, but she promptly shook him off without any hesitation.

The young girl turned back, slightly taken aback, and frowned when she saw that it was Yu Luoyin.

“What’s with that expression?”

Yu Luoyin couldn’t help but laugh at her reaction, raising an eyebrow, “Do you find me so repulsive?”

Bai Xunyin’s brows relaxed, and she turned her head expressionlessly.

“Why are you ignoring me? That’s not the attitude of a good student.”

Perhaps because Bai Xunyin couldn’t speak, Yu Luoyin seemed to have the urge to compensate by talking more.

When facing her, he transformed from his usual cold and refined demeanor to someone more approachable, chasing after her to talk, “I haven’t asked you yet, how did the exam go?”

Mentioning the exam made Bai Xunyin even more upset.

She took out her phone and typed forcefully, then held it up for Yu Luoyin to see.

[Why did you lie to me?]

Seeing the girl’s earnest face which showed a mixture of innocence and seriousness, Yu Luoyin’s shoulders trembled with suppressed laughter, “When did I lie to you?”

His ‘unrepentant’ demeanor only fueled Bai Xunyin’s frustration.

[Your physics scores are actually quite good, so why lie to me about needing tutoring?]

He was good at everything she was good at, and he even excelled in the subjects she struggled with.

Upon closer reflection, Bai Xunyin realized that over the past half month, it was actually Yu Luoyin who had explained more topics to her.

“Are you silly? Can’t you tell I was deliberately finding excuses to get closer to you?”

Yu Luoyin’s ‘clever plan’ was exposed by the person involved, but he didn’t appear flustered. He continued to smile lazily.

He was both casual yet serious, and his words made Bai Xunyin’s heart skip a beat, “The whole world can see that I’m chasing after you, except for you.”

In an unexpected moment, the veil of ambiguity was torn apart, and Bai Xunyin’s mind went momentarily blank, surrounded by a buzzing silence.

The students coming and going near the playground seemed to vanish, and Bai Xunyin’s eyes could only focus on Yu Luoyin.

Seeing his sharp, well-defined features and his pitch-black eyes that seemed to hold both fervor and frigidity…

His direct and candid words left her with nowhere to hide. She felt his slender hand, grasping her arm, was burning her with heat.

She stumbled as she pulled her arm back, her face flushed crimson, reaching up to her fair earlobes.

Bai Xunyin hurriedly typed on her phone to show Yu Luoyin.

[Stop making baseless claims!]

“I’m not making baseless claims.”

Yu Luoyin understood the principle of quitting while he was ahead. He didn’t want to scare her off completely in one go, so he just smiled and said, “I’ll leave now.”

In the future, he would naturally prove it to her.

Having disturbed the calm waters, the young man departed as if he had no attachments.

Bai Xunyin stared blankly at Yu Luoyin’s tall, slender figure, feeling somewhat dazed.

All this time, Yu Luoyin seemed to give off such an impression — a school idol, a top student; those were just labels.

Only those who truly got to know him would realize that beneath the appearance of a gentle and refined young man lay someone who seemed aloof and unapproachable.

Bai Xunyin wasn’t naive. She understood that a guy frequently seeking opportunities to interact with her had some intentions. But what could he possibly gain from her that was visible to the naked eye?

Even so, when she heard Yu Luoyin say those three words — that he wanted to pursue her — Bai Xunyin still found it hard to believe.

For some reason, perhaps simply because she was too apprehensive, she couldn’t bring herself to believe it.

Later on, Bai Xunyin would occasionally recall this day and realize that Yu Luoyin had only said he wanted to pursue her, but he hadn’t said that he liked her.

Amidst the fragrant August air which was scented with the aroma of gardenia blossoms, Third High School’s senior students finally completed their class allocation measures.

Yu Luoyin and Bai Xunyin ended up in the same class as they had hoped. Unsurprisingly, Ah Mo barely made it into the same class, so did Zhou Xin.

As for Lu Ye and Li Yuan, these two students with average academic performance were compelled to be separated from their ever-elusive idol, Yu Luoyin, and spent their days in the regular classes, somewhat aimlessly.

However, Yu Luoyin would still occasionally toss them papers to check, and during these moments, he’d even “scold” them.

This refined and noble young man, who usually spoke so sarcastically, would turn two students who were relatively good in their studies into feeling intellectually inadequate with his mocking. Sometimes, they even had to wonder whether their brains were squeezed at birth.

Of course, this happened only when Yu Luoyin was in the mood to “bestow his wisdom” upon them.

After the class allocation, he dedicated most of his time to Bai Xunyin.

In late August, the air in Linlan City was soft and humid. Yet, the senior students were like coiled fires, facing the upcoming college entrance exams in a state of tension, anxiety, and even insomnia.

Each person’s heart was burning with flames, and in Bai Xunyin’s heart, that flame was named “Yu Luoyin.”

It gave her a bit of a headache.

In a class where everyone was focused on their studies, Yu Luoyin’s actions were hard to ignore. On the first day of seat selection, Bai Xunyin didn’t know how he managed it, but Yu Luoyin ended up seated behind her. During class, she occasionally felt her spine being prodded.

And every time she turned around in exasperation, she would see Yu Luoyin resting his head on his hand, smiling at her.

The slightly curved, pitch-black eyes on his fair skin looked like crescent moons, shining with a brightness that almost blinded her. Despite this, he managed to appear quite innocent.

Whenever Bai Xunyin got angry, Yu Luoyin would “innocently” shrug his shoulders and say, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you.”

“It’s just that this pen won’t cooperate.”

Blaming a misbehaving pen, he had even descended to that level.

“I heard that guys become childish when pursuing someone, and I didn’t believe it. Now I do. Brother Yu, why are you acting like a fool?”

Zhou Xin, who overheard it, coldly sneered, “Now I believe it.”

“Brother Yu, how did you become as naive as an idiot?”

“Get lost.”

Yu Luoyin wasn’t offended and instead, stared at Bai Xunyin’s delicate back, smiling slyly, “I’m willing.”

Their synchronized teasing turned Bai Xunyin beet red, and she couldn’t help but glare at them.

The rustling sounds immediately caught the attention of the teacher at the podium.

The one supervising this self-study session was Shen Langli. Seeing the commotion, he instinctively scolded Bai Xunyin.

“Bai Xunyin, what are you turning around for? You’re a senior now, yet you’re still pulling these tricks during class? If you don’t want to do the paper, go stand at the back! You’ll be punished!”

Bai Xunyin was taken aback by the scolding and was about to stand up.

“Teacher, it’s not Bai Xunyin’s fault. I’m the one disturbing her.”

But Yu Luoyin stood up before her, lazily smirking, “If you’re going to punish anyone, punish me. I apologize for wasting everyone’s time.”

“You even know you’re wasting class time!”

Shen Langli frowned and waved irritably, “Both of you, go stand in the corridor! You’re going to stand together! All of you, move to the back!”

This was exactly what Yu Luoyin wanted. He kept his smile under control and said, “Sure.”

He then walked out.

Bai Xunyin watched his figure and felt like Yu Luoyin was doing it on purpose.

This person was terribly mischievous.
