Chapter 19 - League Begins[1]

'That was close.'

[The princess sure is sharp.]

'I didn't think she would notice only a slight sonar wave.'

[Even if they are three ranks above you, her sensitivity is scary.]

Kai inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly, glancing around the locker room.

The room was exactly like a locker room, no different from where footballers back on Earth stayed during halftime or whatever they called it.

'Jinha usually forced me to learn all football terms and would scream when I called it soccer.' He smiled gently before slapping himself back to reality.

"Shouldn't think of the past," he muttered as he looked over to the screen that hung at the top of the left wall.

He sat on a simple bench and leaned his back against the locker.

[It's about to start.]

The screen shone brightly as the symbol of Noctis Academy appeared on screen.

As the image of the crest slowly vanished, a stage light flickered on the screen, and with a dramatic entrance, Kevin appeared.

Kevin was known as the official ambassador of Noctis. As a master with a peculiar sound-based trait, he was able to make people enjoy whatever comes from his lips.

"That's traits for you," Kai said, his gaze fixed intently on the screen.

Kevin appeared, and with a flick of his finger, the TV screen split and simultaneously broadcasted the live clips of different people in bustling cities tuning in to watch the Lock League.

The screen also showed different arenas where the league will take place, from forests to deserts to even frozen cities, not forgetting the white arena where the 1v1 will occur.

Kevin proceeded to explain the rules of the Lock League, which Kai was already familiar with, but after covering the basics, he added a few important points to noted.

Firstly, all students won't be ranked based on just strength and skill, but also intellect – your ability to use your surroundings and even fellow students – bidding, which was the amount of money a guild was willing to pay for you to join them, and finally votes.

After Kai grasped exactly what he needed, he just watched the TV nonchalantly, paying attention to one part and not so much to the other.

After what felt like hours of mumbling, which Kai weirdly didn't enjoy one bit of, Kevin finally came to a stop, and the ranking for the league appeared on the screen.

Just as he thought he was the last among three hundred and three people in the rankings that appeared.

But to his surprise, Matthew wasn't the one in first place; above him were four names.

Anica Abraham at fourth place, Melissa Arundel at third place, Zhou Qinling at second place, and Joshua Augustine at first place.

"Hmm, if my memory serves me right, Anica is meant to be Song of the Dead's daughter, Melissa Arundel is Lisa's younger sister, and Joshua is Radiant Sword's femboy son."

[Yes, they are all third years.]

Kai nodded before turning back to the TV; Kevin was giving his final bow as the roused of the match appeared.

First was the joint combat in the patrician jungle, and after that were the first official matchups of the day, which would be six matches with three happening at once in different parts of the arena.

Kai's luck stats seemed to be fully active on the day the roster was made since he didn't have any team matches till the next week when Ivy would be back with his sword, and maybe he might have already weaved the flame ability.

Letting out a sigh of relief, Kai grabbed a bottle of water that lay by his side before summoning his UI.

He didn't leave the glowing interface for long and soon dismissed it.

'Let's complete our daily task.'

Kai dried his hair with the manual drier he saw in one of the lockers.

He wore only black gym shorts; a trickle of water dropped from his hair onto the cold, tile-like floor.

His abs and muscles contrasting as the warm dryer blew on his raven-black hair.

The timer on the television had only ten minutes left, which meant that all students were to assemble at the central area for the first official match of the Lock League.

Kai sighed as he picked up his uniform that hung in the locker.

'Can you approximate how long the forest is?'

[... I can, but; I doubt it would be of any use to you.]

'Why?'

[... What is the difference between 100 acres and 1 hectare?]

Kai paused before stretching his hands as wide as his body.

'This way big.'

[Ha... Do you think this is a cool movie? Where I will go, like, it is 500 kilometres, and you go, like, 500, huh? How many people do you think know the difference in length?]

"Solid point," he muttered. "Then send me the sauce."

[The what?]

"Never mind," he replied, putting his cloth back on. "Let's go; wouldn't want to run into anyone."

[I think you should be scared of people running into you.]

Alpha said as the room door automatically opened.

******

All the students of the academy soon gathered in the hall that left just a few minutes ago.

Now Kai couldn't help but notice that the students had already arranged themselves in groups, each wearing their badge on their right side and the school's badge on the left.

[Things aren't going to be easy even if they separate everyone.]

'Tell me about it.'

Kai surveyed his surroundings in a hurried fashion before looking at the raven badge he wore and then sighed.

'At least when I get an offer from a guild, I won't have to wear this badge or uniform during combat.'

[I really want to analyse that mage combat suit.]

Kai couldn't help but shiver a little at Alpha's words. 'Did you say you want something? You never asked for anything before. I'm now scared of what you want to do with it.'

[Do you think I'm some kind of demon?]

'Don't know; the once said AI wants to control the world.' He smiled slightly. 'But if you want it that bad, I better get a bid offer soon.'

[You mean we, right?]

'Yes, we Alpha. Are you happy now?'

[Yes, I am.]

In an instant, sparks of light formed in front of them where the mana stone once stood, and a purple portal gateway opened with a clear view of the forest.

The exam timer slowly counted down as Meltonia's viewers waited in anticipation.

As soon as it hit zero, all the students from different teams rushed into the gateway.
