ISEKAI? More like I See Crap!-Chapter 195: Heroes Without Capes ( )
Chapter 195: Heroes Without Capes ( 195 )
When Hazuki and Elvia arrived at the orphanage, the morning sun had already brightened the yard.
The door creaked open as they stepped in.
"Elvia!!" a voice called out.
Chasia ran toward her, eyes wide with relief but stopped short the moment she saw the black-haired man beside her.
Hazuki stood there, relaxed as always, his hands in his pockets and an unreadable look on his face.
"Umm... m-morning..." Chasia mumbled, glancing up at him.
"...Oh," Hazuki said flatly. "Morning."
Then he looked down at Elvia, who was still holding his hand until just a moment ago.
"Oi, little elf. Go wash up and change. Your dress is filthy."
"Umm... okay," Elvia nodded obediently.
Hazuki turned and casually walked away, heading toward the town.
Elvia stood at the door, still watching him.
Smiling.
"...What’s with the smile, Elvia?" Chasia asked, tilting her head.
Elvia blinked.
Then looked at her and gave a soft shrug.
"Nothing~"
"Elvia!"
Kisha rushed forward the moment she spotted her at the entrance.
She dropped to her knees and pulled the elf girl into a tight hug, relief pouring from her voice.
"Why did you go to the forest alone last night!?"
Elvia blinked, startled—but then slowly returned the hug.
"...Umm... sorry."
She lowered her head.
"But... uncle protected me last night."
Kisha pulled back just enough to look her in the eyes.
"Uncle...?"
"Elvia," she said softly, "do you mean... that human?"
Elvia nodded once.
"...Did he really... kill all those monsters?"
Elvia looked down at her fingers. Then up at Kisha.
"Y-Yes... he did."
She held her voice steady.
"Maybe... to protect this place. From being attacked."
Kisha blinked.
Elvia continued, softer now.
"I saw it... He finished all the monsters with magic. Really strong magic. I think... I think it was high-tier."
Kisha didn’t answer right away.
She just stared at Elvia...
then slowly glanced at the path Hazuki had just walked down.
Chasia, who had been listening nearby, stared with wide eyes.
"...So... our new papa is... a hero?"
Elvia blinked. "...Eh?"
"You said he protected you, right?" Chasia asked, stepping closer. "He fought monsters, saved the town, and... and he took care of us before too! That means he’s a hero!"
Elvia tilted her head, thoughtful.
"...Umm... I don’t know. He never said he was a hero..."
She looked down, fingers lightly brushing her sleeve.
"But... he really did save me. He protected me."
Her voice grew softer.
"When the big wolf attacked... he moved in front of me. He didn’t run."
Chasia’s eyes widened more.
"He got hurt," Elvia continued. "His back was bleeding when the wolf hit him."
"W-What?!" Kisha gasped quietly.
"But..."
Elvia smiled gently.
"...I healed him. With my magic."
Chasia stood frozen for a moment.
Then, with full belief in her eyes.
"Then that means... he’s our hero."
Inside Kisha’s mind...
This human...
He helped me when the debt collectors came, when I thought I was going to lose everything. He stood between them and us and beat them without hesitation.
He got the kids temporary IDs.
He paid for new beds, mattresses, pillows... even clothes and stocked the pantry.
He gave me enough coin to run this place like a real orphanage.
He hired old Buron to fix the stairs, the roof, the floor... and today, they’re building new toilets and showers.
And now I find out... he protected Elvia from a monster horde?
Alone?
Her hands clenched softly at her sides.
At first... I thought he was like the others. I thought he helped because he wanted something. My body, maybe. So... I offered.
She looked down.
But...e refused. Flatly. Said something about a pinky promise with a girl.
And last night... the Guild Master said that girl...
...is Princess Ellyna. The princess of this kingdom.
Kisha stood there, quietly watching the children.
How lucky is that girl...
Kisha quietly reached into the pouch at her waist.
From a slim slot in the lining of her robe, she slid out a small metal card, her permanent ID.
She pressed her thumb to the corner of the card.
A faint glow flickered, and soft text shimmered across the surface.
The balance was more than she ever imagined seeing attached to her name. Enough to keep the orphanage running for months. Enough to ensure food was on the table every day, with leftovers. Enough to plan, actually plan-for the future.
Her hand trembled slightly as she closed her fingers around the card.
She looked out the window toward the forest trail Hazuki had taken into town.
This human... this man named Hazuki...
He did all of this.
Without asking for anything in return.
And the strangest part..
He never even smiled about it.
"Miss Kisha?" a small voice called from the hallway.
She blinked, snapping out of her thoughts.
"Hmm?"
One of the younger boys peeked in through the doorway.
"...Something’s burning in the kitchen."
Kisha froze.
Then her eyes widened.
"Aaaahhh!! My cooking!!!"
She bolted toward the kitchen at full speed, apron flapping behind her as the kids laughed and scrambled out of the way.
Smoke puffed lightly from the open doorway.
The once-quiet morning turned into a flurry of shouting, coughing, and frantic spoon-stirring.
Elvia smiled quietly to herself, then padded toward the back of the orphanage.
The outdoor shower area wasn’t fully repaired yet.
She stepped inside, closed the curtain as best she could, and began to wash.
She quietly washed herself, using the small wooden bucket and cold water drawn from the barrel nearby. No complaints. No fuss.
Once she was done, she stepped out and wrapped herself in a clean towel.
Just as she finished wringing out her hair.
"Alright, boys!!"
A familiar shout echoed from the front gate.
"Start fixing anything you see! Roof, floor, or that sad excuse of a shower back there!!"
Old Buron had arrived.
His thick arms were crossed, voice booming like thunder as he barked orders.
Behind him, a group of rough-looking repairmen—beastkin and human alike—carried planks, nails, tools, and fresh beams of wood.
"Yes, Chief!" they replied in unison, fanning out like soldiers ready for battle.
Elvia blinked.
Still in her towel, she quietly slipped back into the house before the workers rounded the corner.
Old Buron stomped into the yard, boots thudding against the dirt as he pointed toward the building.
"The human agreed to spend up to FIVE GOLD COINS!!" he roared, eyes gleaming with purpose.
The workers all froze for a moment.
Five gold?
That was more than some full house renovations.
"So, boys!!" Buron shouted again, slamming his tool belt down onto a barrel.
"FIX ANYTHING YOU CAN FIND! Roof, floor, walls, leaks, windows, if it creaks, it gets replaced!!"
He jabbed a thick finger toward the back of the house.
"That toilet—and that sad excuse of a shower?!"
He grinned wide, almost malicious.
"DEMOLISH IT. BUILD A NEW ONE FROM SCRATCH!!"
"Yes, Chief!!" the workers shouted, already moving in formation.
Hammers swung. Boards were dropped. Someone brought out a chalk board to start writing material needs.
Inside the house, Elvia, now dressed in a clean dress, peeked out from the curtain.
