Khalifa looked at Kylo, who had been watching them deal with the remaining mob in that area, further weakening them.

He expended a lot of energy clearing the mobs and dealing with that earth zombie, it was better for the enemy to lose their ammunition.

Hilten, who had been dealing with the zombies with his remaining gun, finally noticed him there—just watching coldly—and frowned.

Looking at this, it was obvious that Kylo had an idea on who was responsible for the attack on them. However, it was unlikely he had confirmed this so there would still be some doubts.

"Why don’t you help us?" He yelled, pretending to be unaware.

The general nodded. "Clear these zombies, major! It’s an order!"

"No," Kylo said. "I will do nothing."

"MAJOR!" The old man yelled, eyes reddening, pointing his shaky gun at them while his companions tried to defend against the mob, some falling after a while.

"Clear up this mob, major. THAT’S AN ORDER."

Kylo didn’t answer him, but his eyes were focused on the betrayers—disgrace to the name of soldiers—who fell one by one.

At the same time, he was also watching over the healer, her current location, and the risks of putting her in danger.

Kylo looked at Khalifa, whose eyes were on Claire.

He knew they were friends, and they had to be careful lest she be in an even greater danger than she already was.

After a few more of the General and Hilten’s men fell, Khalifa and Kylo finally made a move. They used some of their more cost-efficient techniques, taking down the score of zombies left.

At this time, other than the General and Hilten, there were only a handful of soldiers left there.

The soldiers and the general didn’t feel thankful for their ’save’, however. Instead, the General gave Kylo a bad look. "What took you so long?!"

Kylo didn’t grace him with an answer. Instead, he gesture to get to Claire, but immediately both the General and Hilten came in between.

"Stay there," The General ordered, eyes red, and hands on his gun. "I can’t trust you after your insubordination. Don’t come near!"

The remaining soldiers shook as they watched the exchange. If there would still be a fight after this, they knew they didn’t have the energy anymore!

On the other hand, Khalifa and the other’s eyes were on Claire, who seemed pale and weak and was now getting dragged to heal the old man again, as well as Hilten.

"She’s already weak. She doesn’t have the energy to heal two men anymore," Khalifa said, as calmly as she could. "Let her rest."

Before anyone could react to that, they heard a soldier scream.

They turned to look at the soldier pointing at his companion. "He’s been bitten!" he yelled, pointing at the man’s sharp wound on the leg.

Immediately, the remaining soldiers stepped back from this person who paled, terrified.

"No, I—"

BANG!

And he fell under the gun of a companion he had been fighting with up until a minute prior.

Khalifa and the others nearby stared at the interaction, with Khalifa, who was relatively close, looking at the wound.

That was too sharp a wound to be from a zombie. Rather, it was more likely an injury from the helicopter’s crash.

However, Khalifa didn’t feel pity. They had heard what these men did. Abandonment was understandable—they were humans, too—but as soldiers, they pointed guns at their own people and pushed them to the mouths of monsters with their own hands.

They were just inhumane and were a disgrace not just to their uniforms, but to humanity in general.

The General didn’t seem to feel pity either. He simply sneered and looked at the healer, getting her to fix him. His eyes darkened at the sight of his hands, unable to even hold a gun stably.

Hilten looked at the useless old man who couldn’t even hold a gun properly anymore, the old man who could only use his tongue to convince people he still mattered.

Should he make an exit plan? He mused.

Either way, Claire was being squeezed for all of her value, and she could only look at Khalifa longingly. She didn’t want to be so weak either, like a damsel, but she simply didn’t have the strength anymore.

Until she heard the voice of her most important person, that is.

"Claire!" Chris yelled, and the girl looked at him with wide eyes, immediately forgetting her own pain.

"Chris! You’re okay!" She sobbed and wanted to run. But she was held back again by the old man. He immediately took a knife from his boots and slashed her feet. "Come back here!"

Chris and the others gasped as her legs buckled and she fell back with the general, quickly finding a blade on her neck.

For someone who could barely hold a gun, his knife skills were still good—as expected of a soldier who had lived by the blade his whole life.

Chris saw the trickle of blood crawling down her neck and to her shirt. His heart turned cold, yelling. "CLAIRE!!"

"You dare disobey me? FIX ME!" The general ordered, still thinking everyone would follow him. "HURRY!"

Claire sobbed and nodded, shakily lifting her hand to heal the man with whatever ability she could squeeze. When it wasn’t enough, the knife shifted to her stomach and she shakily worked even harder—way beyond her limits.

They could see this as she was visibly losing color and it broke their hearts.

Khalifa pursed her lips and raised her hands slightly. Using her remaining mana, small sharp ice pieces appeared, ready to take him down in a mind’s notice.

Unexpectedly, the old man—who was still surprisingly alert—whipped his head to look at her, immediately pressing the knife a little deeper on the girl’s skin.

"KYAA! Wuuu—"

"CLAIRE!!"

Khalifa’s ice immediately dissipated. She wasn’t confident for a fast kill this time, and the general was obviously not to be underestimated.

She could not risk Claire’s life at all.

One, she liked Claire and she was her friend. Second, she was the heroine of ’this world’.

Her premature death could cause some unexpected consequences. It wasn’t anything like the world would suddenly implode upon her death, of course, but it definitely wouldn’t be a good thing.

At this, Khalifa stepped forward. "I can heal you better than she can."

"Take me, instead."
