Kill the Sun-Chapter 974 Pairs
Nick teleported towards the Nightmare and hid himself.
'The mission starts now,' he thought. 'The Nightmen have a fighting chance against the alien warriors, but all of that is pointless if I can't deal with the antimatter laser.'
'The Amorphous Race can't allow humanity to come back. Suppressing humanity the first time had come with a tremendous cost. If humanity breaks free again, it will become almost impossible unless they dedicate all of their forces to it.'
'They would need to send several warriors in the Tenth Realm, which will make them open to an attack from the other tribes.'
'If they realize that they can't suppress humanity with the two warriors who are stationed here, they will destroy Earth with the antimatter laser.'
'Sure, the strongest Nightmen can survive and go to other planets, but with only a couple of men and women, repopulating will become impossible.'
'We do have the technology to grow artificial humans, but these humans do not possess Souls.'
'If Earth gets destroyed, humanity will die out.'
Nick took one last deep breath.
Then, he flew through the walls.
As he reached the other side, he saw a big open space with a gigantic portal at the end.
This was the access point the aliens had created to get to Earth.
When Nick looked through the portal, he saw the moon.
While the portal was stationary in this room, the other side was not stationary.
The other side traveled along the Sun's surface so that it always faced the moon.
Right now, there was not even a single alien in the portal room.
Nick waited.
About a day later, he could see something approaching through the portal.
It looked like a gigantic insect covered in chitin.
The object rapidly became bigger in Nick's vision, and just a minute later, it was already in front of the portal.
It moved at incredible speeds, and there was no sign of it slowing down.
With incredible speed, the object shot through the portal, and it looked like it was about to crash into the cargo hold like a meteorite.
But then, several huge tentacles appeared on the walls of the cargo hold, forming a net.
BANG!
The object hit the tentacles, and the tentacles stretched.
The object slowed down more and more until it completely stopped.
'This thing probably moved at over a hundred kilometers per second, but it was stopped within just 200 meters.'
'A normal human would turn into a puddle if exposed to such forces.'
The next moment, several long insect legs came out of the chitin ship.
The legs stretched to the ground, and the ship walked to the portal's exit.
When the ship's front stood in front of the portal, it stopped moving.
Then, one of the walls of the ship parted, revealing the occupants.
Two engineers with countless tentacles walked out of the ship before traveling to one of the walls.
These were Nick's targets.
'The aliens perform maintenance on the machines once per month. I saw them about a month ago, and I expected that they would come again at about this time.'
One of the walls between the Prephyx generator and the cargo hold opened, and the two engineers walked through.
Nick followed them.
'These two are a symmetrical pair, which means they both do the same task. That means they will most likely split up.'
The Amorphous Race worked in pairs, and the pairs were either symmetrical or asymmetrical.
A symmetrical pair consisted of two aliens that looked the same and could do the same things.
An asymmetrical pair consisted of two aliens who looked very different from each other and could do different things.
The decision of which kind of pairing to go with depended on what was more important.
Quantity or quality?
If the pair needed to do many tasks that were not very complex, a symmetrical pairing would be more advantageous since they could essentially work twice as fast as one individual.
If the pair needed to do few tasks that were extremely complex, an asymmetrical pairing would make more sense. Like this, the two of them could work together on this task while specializing on different aspects.
Strategists generally worked in asymmetrical pairs since their decisions essentially decided the fate of an entire operation.
They didn't need to make many decisions, but the decisions had to be correct.
Because of that, most Strategist pairs had one part focusing on analyzing the world's perception and making calculations, while the other part focused on communication and choosing one of the many options the first part came up with.
Engineers came in both varieties. Low-ranking engineers were mostly divided into symmetrical pairs since they just had a lot to do, while high-ranking engineers were mostly asymmetrical since they needed to develop new technologies.
Warriors were almost exclusively asymmetrical. Survival was the most important, and the pairs generally had one part focusing on defense, while the other focused on offense.
Illusionists came in both varieties, depending on what they focused on. The Chief Illusionists who had created the Sun were a symmetrical pair since running the Sun was a very labor-intensive job. They constantly had to fine-tune the Sun.
Representatives were special. They exclusively came in symmetrical pairs, but the reason was that they needed to be in agreement over their decisions. Both of them made their judgments individually, and if their judgments differed, they would need to contact the Mother to ask for guidance.
Nick watched the two engineers for a couple of minutes.
Both of them worked on the central machine that harvested the Star Energy together, but after they were done with that machine, they split up.
Nick looked at one of the two and followed it.
He saw the engineer putting one of its tentacles into a hole in the machine.
A cocktail of hormones and signals came out of the tentacle and entered the machine.
For just a moment, the machine stopped operating, but it quickly started operating again.
After some minutes, the engineer pulled its tentacles out and walked over to the next machine.
That was when Nick gathered his Zephyx.
