Chapter 71: Older brother, I was wrong.

"Put me down you big oaf." Mei Mei lightly slapped Shengjie’s back.

He set her down, not in the chair where she had been but on the ground and he imprisoned her with his arm, wrapping it around her neck like a vine. "Do you know how many rescue simulations we have run to come and liberate you from that loser?"

"Enlighten me." She said.

"Noo..no, absolutely no talk about the scum. We are here to drink and show Mei Mei a good time." Rose complained. "Sit down, the platinum drinks are being brought over."

Some of their friends cheered, Mei Mei did not. She had only drunk one glass of champagne and now she was drinking soda. She did not want to go home intoxicated in case she run into Mingzhu.

"Hey, Jun sisters, your brother is here." Kang Shengjie announced.

His announcement collided with the lowering of the music and more soldiers invading the bar. They were not dressed in official imperial soldier uniforms but their aura was unmatched.

They were twenty three in number and they followed Jun Mingzhe to the VIP section before scattering around to mingle with familiar guests, drink or flirt while vigilantly keeping an eye on their Imperial commander.

Jun Mingzhe, their leader exuded a calm confidence, commanding respect without needing to assert it. He was not a man of many words but the he way he moved, stood, sat or looked communicated volumes.

Like now, he had looked at all the unnecessary people and commanded them to move, with his eyes. All the people around Rose and Mei Mei with the exception of Jingzhe and Shengjie were gone.

They were familiar enough with Mingzhe to know when he needed privacy and when he could be cordial.

Mingzhe’s quiet brooding made Mei Mei uneasy. When they were growing up, she would run to her mom or great grandparents when Mingzhe was giving her the mean face. She had nobody to run to now except for Rose.

When she switched to Rose’s chair and tried to hide behind her, Rose pushed her away!

Mei Mei could not believe it, and she gasped to express her shock. "Big sis."

Rose was very much unapologetic and the tired look on her face said so. "Don’t put me in the middle of this, I know better than to get between you two when you have a disagreement. Come on Mei Mei, you knew that you would have to face him eventually."

Mei Mei looked down, sighed sadly and then she stood up. There was one way she could coax her brother with ease.

She approached Mingzhe who remained as still and stoic as a statue of a grumpy man. She pinched the corner of his shirt and blinked a few times, pouting and faking a pitiful look.

"Older brother..." she said coquettishly in a soft and sweet voice.

Rose, Jingzhe and Shengjie experienced the same emotions, surprise and disgust. Not a bad kind of disgust, the good kind which was fascinating. The struggle between Mei Mei and Mingzhe over who was the older twin had never ended.

Mei Mei had always ordered Mingzhe to call her older sister. Now that she needed forgiveness, the tables had turned!! They were fascinated and curious to see if her little trick would work.

"Care to bet?" Shengjie whispered to Rose.

She nodded, "fifty yuan, he folds in five minutes."

"One hundred, one minute." Shengjie replied. He got a glass of wine and downed it in one sip. His eyes did not leave the twins.

"Older, I have missed you." Mei Mei whimpered. "You know that I love you the most in the world."

Mingzhe’s jaw tightened, he leaned back in the chair and raised his head to meet her eyes. "Oh, you love me the most in the whole world. Didn’t you say that about....."

"Brother," Mei Mei cut him off and she winced. She stopped pinching his shirt and resorted to fidgeting with the buttons of the denim jacket. "I did not mean it, I was just trying to make a point back then. I know that I hurt you, little monk. I was foolish, reckless and selfish. But I have learned my lesson and I have changed. I will never let a man get between us ever again. I have missed you so much--missed us." Her voice softened until it turned into a whisper, trembling with bits of vulnerability slipping through. "I was wrong, please don’t be mad at me."

Mingzhe studied her, his icy stare unwavering. He knew she was trying to butter him up, going for his weak points. And his biggest weak point was that he could not stand to see her sad. He was like her personal superman, when she cried, he flew out to seek justice.

However, she needed to learn that saying sorry did not make things right at the snap of a finger. She had been gone for eight years, he had been living with anger and pain for eight years. Her leaving had felt like betrayal to him.

"You betrayed me." he said.

Mei Mei bit her lip, her eyes glistened and she grabbed his arm lightly. "I know. And I know that I don’t deserve your forgiveness, but I am asking for it anyway. I betrayed our twin code for an unworthy man and I will earn back your trust if you give me another chance. Please, Mingzhe. I need my older brother back. I was bullied so much without you there to protect me and I was lonely. If I lose you again...."

She broke off and sniveled, real tears falling from her eyes this time. Both of them had no idea that one of the people in the VIP section had been broadcasting himself live, having fun. He had left his phone recording and the apology session was being watched live by thousands of citizens.

More were pouring into the channel by the second and most were urging Mingzhe to forgive Mei Mei already. Some were asking about the twin code and of course, some were saying she was undeserving of forgiveness.

Meanwhile, Mingzhe was still silent and Rose was tense. Despite the bet, she was hoping that they made peace quickly because they were family. As soon as she saw Mingzhe sigh and relax his shoulders she jumped up, shouting, yes, over and over.

"You are still a spoiled brat." Mingzhe told Mei Mei.

She raised her head, her face lit lit and a smile broke through her tears. Whenever he called her a spoiled brat, after a fight, it was because he had forgiven her for whatever mischief she had been involved in.

"You are really impossible." Mingzhe muttered and laughed. "From now on, I am the older brother, if you ever try to change this fact, I will freeze you out." He picked up his jacket and took a pen and paper which he held up to her. "Sign here."

Rose and Shengjie quickly crowded Mei Mei to take a look at what Mingzhe wanted her to sign.

"A legal document officially designating you as the older brother and me the younger sister!!" Mei Mei exclaimed.
