Landlord in the Arctic-Chapter 72: Making a Move
Cut off the head of the snake.
Take out that enormous Black Wolf, and the pack would be without a leader and scatter.
Feng Shan turned and shot Nash a look, then carefully shifted his body through the snow, searching for the best firing position.
The Wolf Pack was less than a kilometer away, and they were on a ridge. Even in these conditions, Feng Shan couldn’t guarantee a one-shot kill on the Black Wolf. If it got away, tracking it down again would be even more difficult.
The pair moved along the side of the ridge, planning to open fire on the Wolf Pack from downwind.
Under the cover of the biting wind, the distance between them gradually closed.
The Wolf Pack’s attention was entirely focused on the fresh kill. They were savoring the spoils of their victory, completely oblivious to the approaching danger.
Feng Shan kept his body low, minimizing his profile. The snow under his boots crunched softly as he moved, step by step, into firing range.
Reaching a vantage point on a slope, the two of them crouched down.
The view here was relatively open, allowing them to clearly see the Wolf Pack’s every move.
Feng Shan rested his finger lightly on the trigger, his crosshairs centered on the Black Wolf as it tore at the reindeer carcass. He whispered a reminder, "Prioritize the Black Wolf. Ignore the others for now."
"Right," Nash said, raising his rifle.
Just as he was about to pull the trigger, the satellite phone in Feng Shan’s pocket suddenly rang. The shrill tone was exceptionally loud across the vast Tundra.
For a moment, Feng Shan, Nash, and the Wolf Pack were all stunned.
BANG! BANG!
Feng Shan’s finger jerked the trigger reflexively. The startling ringtone had thrown off their aim. One bullet grazed the Black Wolf’s scalp and slammed into the reindeer carcass. Nash’s shot hit an unlucky North American Gray Wolf standing nearby.
’Shit!!’
’Who the hell is calling at a time like this?’
Annoyed, Feng Shan pulled out the satellite phone. The caller ID showed it was Frank.
Before Feng Shan could say a word, Frank’s eager voice came through.
"Buddy, where’d you run off to? I didn’t see you at the camp."
"Your timing is impeccable," Feng Shan said through gritted teeth, his eyes locking with the Black Wolf’s hundreds of meters away.
The Black Wolf had been startled by the familiar crack of gunfire. In its memory, that sound always meant one of its pack had died.
And sure enough, a gray wolf had fallen beside it. Its body twitched helplessly in the snow, blood seeping from its fur.
It looked up in the direction of the gunfire. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
It saw the two hateful humans.
Old hatreds and new grudges surged within it. The Black Wolf threw its head back and let out a piercing howl.
AWOOOOOO!!
At their alpha’s command, the Wolf Pack instantly dropped the meat from their mouths and charged toward the snowy slope.
Their forms streaked across the snow, kicking up flurries of white.
"Buddy, when are you coming back? I miss you so much! I even got you..." Frank’s voice continued to babble from the satellite phone, now lying forgotten in the snow.
Feng Shan raised his Type 56 carbine again, trying to get a bead on the Black Wolf. But the creature was cunning; it used the other wolves and the reindeer carcass for cover, disappearing from sight.
Faced with the charging Wolf Pack, Feng Shan and Nash had no choice but to turn their rifles on the rest of the attackers.
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
For a time, the sharp crack of gunfire shattered the tranquility of the Tundra’s sunset.
Every bullet fired brought down a North American Gray Wolf. Their bodies slammed heavily onto the ground, sending up a spray of red-and-white snow.
CLICK!
The Type 56’s internal magazine was empty. Feng Shan swiftly pulled the bolt back, locking it open.
He snatched a stripper clip he’d set on the snow, slotted it into the guide over the open action, and thumbed down ten rounds into the magazine. He pulled the empty clip free, then tugged the bolt handle, letting it fly forward to chamber a new round.
He raised the Type 56 and resumed firing.
The path up the slope was now littered with the bodies of fallen gray wolves.
Their corpses lay strewn across the ground, their blood staining the white snow crimson.
The ferocity in the surviving wolves’ eyes gave way to fear. Their steps grew hesitant, their initial courageous charge faltering.
Some wolves began to look back, as if waiting for a command from their alpha.
Back at the distant camp, hearing the intense gunfire, Coca-Cola, Prince, the Little Wolf Cub, and the three White Wolves grew worried their master was in danger and immediately bolted in the direction of the shots.
Meanwhile, on the slope, Feng Shan saw the Super Wolf Pack halt. He stood up, faced the remaining gray wolves, and fired his rifle into the air.
He roared as he fired.
"Get out! All of you, get out!"
In that moment, the Wolf Pack finally understood the terror their reindeer prey had felt. Gazing at their fallen packmates scattered across the snow, one gray wolf finally lost its nerve, tucked its tail, and fled with a whimper.
Where one went, the others followed. A chain reaction swept through the pack, and they turned and fled.
MEOW! MEOW!
WOOF! WOOF!
YIP! YIP! YIP!
AWOOO!!
The little ones came running up. They stared wide-eyed at the bloody scene, having never witnessed such carnage before.
The three White Wolves, however, saw the heavy casualties among the gray wolves who had attacked their kin. Vengeance finally theirs, they threw their heads back and howled in triumph.
Feng Shan flicked out the folding, sword-style bayonet beneath his rifle’s barrel. "I’m going down to find that Black Wolf," he said in a low voice. "You keep watch from up here."
Before Nash could object.
Feng Shan grabbed his Type 56 and slid down the snowy slope, the three White Wolves close on his heels. He didn’t need to stop and check any of the gray wolf corpses they passed.
If his Witchcraft Bone Ring collected Soul Power from a body, it meant the wolf was dead. If it didn’t, he had no problem putting another bullet in it just to be sure.
As he made his way down, crimson threads of Soul Power continuously appeared on the surface of his Witchcraft Bone Ring.
The Soul Power from two gray wolves was equivalent to that of a single brown bear. Feng Shan had never had such a profitable hunt.
He could feel the surging, tidal wave of Soul Power churning within him, causing his body to radiate waves of heat.
But Feng Shan knew that, due to his body’s limitations, the enhancements he could gain from Soul Power had reached their peak. ’If I were in my ancestors’ magical world,’ he thought, ’I could probably achieve a much greater boost.’
Still, for his current needs, the enhancements were more than enough.
’If I actually became a superman, I’d probably get locked up in a lab and sliced into pieces like a guinea pig.’
He walked from the slope down to where the Wolf Pack had ambushed the reindeer.
A quick count revealed twenty-four dead gray wolves. He had not only harvested their Soul Power, but the dead reindeer had also contributed a wave of it.
But the Black Wolf he was searching for was nowhere to be found.
’Damn it!’
’Did it escape during the chaos?’
’This is going to be a problem.’
Wolves are incredibly vindictive animals. If it got away, it would probably harass the Crown Territory endlessly.
Then there was all this reindeer meat. It was a shame to waste it, but the wolves had already been at it. Besides, without a sled, it would be impossible for two people to haul it all back to the Crown Territory.
Just as Feng Shan was lost in thought.
Suddenly, the three White Wolves let out low, warning growls.
The next instant, the snow beneath the reindeer carcass exploded outward as several gray wolves burst from a hidden pit, launching a surprise attack on Feng Shan.
With no time to react, Feng Shan dodged sideways on pure instinct. A wolf’s claws grazed his clothes, their passage stirring a cold draft.
The three White Wolves charged head-on to meet the attackers. Before Feng Shan could even catch his breath, several more gray wolves emerged from the snow—and among them was the Alpha Wolf, the Black Wolf itself.
A cold sweat broke out on Feng Shan’s back.
’Treacherous!!’
’The damn thing actually knows how to set an ambush.’
’Good thing I reacted quickly.’
