Legendary FBI Detective-Chapter 348: People are Insignificant, It’s the Brain that Matters
Special Investigation Team, meeting room.
"Do you know who Diego Rodriguez de Silva is?"
Instead of answering Luo An's question, Wan De turned the question back on him.
Luo An didn't answer, either; he just quietly looked at Wan De.
"I know him."
Just as the air was growing still, Reesi nodded and said:
"A few years ago, in a small South American country, there was a large gang. Their main business was gambling products, and they shipped a large amount of gambling products into federal territory every year.
Diego Rodriguez de Silva was the gang leader of this gang."
"That's correct."
Wan De gave Reesi an approving look and then explained:
"For the sake of the federation, a few years ago, John led his team and took down Diego Rodriguez de Silva.
But Diego's youngest son escaped, and this incident is likely the son seeking revenge on John."
"Mm."
After hearing Wan De's explanation, Reesi nodded in realization, and Luo An also slightly nodded.
On the surface, it appeared Luo An accepted this backstory, but in reality, he didn't believe a single word of it.
Everyone in the world knows about the CIA's actions outside the federation. Compared to what Wan De described as "for the sake of the federation," Luo An was more inclined to believe that John led his team to kill the gang leader merely to support someone more cooperative with the CIA.
Even the fact that John led his team to kill the gang leader, Luo An chose not to believe.
From the very first glance at Wan De, Luo An saw through the old man's thick-skinned deceit and habitual lying; who knows if what he'd just said was just fabricated on the spot.
Or perhaps attributing someone else's deeds to John was also not unlikely.
Not wanting to delve deeper with these CIA people who were habitual liars with nine out of ten statements being false, Luo An cut straight to the point:
"Now that John has gone to face the kidnappers alone, do you know where this group of kidnappers might be hiding?"
"No."
Wan De shook his head first, then stood up from his chair and buttoned up his suit jacket, saying coldly:
"However, I do know the locations of several safe houses John has set up in Los Angeles. We'll definitely be able to find a trace of John at those places."
Hearing this, Luo An and Reesi also rose from their chairs. Luo An simply glanced at Wan De about the hinted issue in his words without saying much more.
Indeed, typical of the CIA—guarding against outsiders and monitoring insiders had become their habit.
Special Investigation Team, office area.
Following Wan De's mention of several safe houses, Mona quickly located John at a corner store and discovered both the car he was driving and its license plate number.
Seeing that Mona had managed to locate John's position based on the license plate number in just a few minutes, accomplishing what had not been done for so long, Luo An's brow twitched as he gave Wan De an inconspicuous glance.
Indeed, a teammate who stabs you in the back is far deadlier than a frightening enemy.
Safe houses, once exposed, couldn't be used again, yet Wan De, for John's sake, had exposed so many this time... A glint flashed in Luo An's eyes as he said:
"It seems you at the CIA really value John."
Wan De, with his arms crossed over his chest, didn't answer. After a long silence, he said:
"John is a hero of the CIA; he shouldn't die at the hands of these avengers."
Hearing Wan De's words, Luo An's expression remained unchanged, but he couldn't help but laugh inwardly.
These CIA folks were seriously hypocritical.
Luo An was certain that if, at that moment, Mona announced that John had died, Wan De would not be sad. Instead, he would immediately try to eliminate those people under the pretext of "avenging John."
John himself was not important. As a former CIA agent and a current CIA manager, the information in his head was what was most valuable.
What Wan De truly feared was not John's death, but his capture.
Once John was controlled by the kidnappers, no one knew whether he could withstand severe torture and reveal information that Wan De didn't want him to.
There are many defectors from the federation every year, and the CIA is no exception.
Federal culture has always centered around the individual or the family, with the state and national interests ranking third in priority.
Although Luo An despised Wan De, he had no intention of exposing him. The urgent task at hand was to quickly find John, find Kara, and catch the group of kidnappers who took Kara.
"Everyone! I've located John's car!"
Just at that moment, Mona suddenly exclaimed loudly:
"On a highway in the southeast part of Los Angeles, he is driving straight in that direction!"
"Not far ahead on that highway, there's an abandoned industrial park, very suitable for hiding or ambushing."
As Luo An mentioned ambushing, he sneakily glanced at Wan De and indeed noticed Wan De's eyelid twitch subconsciously.
With an inward chuckle, Luo An quickly headed to the equipment room with Reesi and Michelle, while calling out loudly:
"Mona, keep tracking and surveilling John's situation at all times!
Also, contact SWAT, have them get to John's location as quickly as possible!"
"Understood!"
Mona immediately picked up the landline to make the call, while Wan De also took out his cellphone and started pressing it.
Once Luo An, Reesi, and Michelle were all fully armed and had picked up their weapons, Wan De quickly followed and seriously said:
"I'm joining you in this operation."
Luo An looked at Mona behind Wan De and saw her make an "OK" sign with her hand. He then nodded and agreed to take him along as they headed towards the elevator:
"Fine, but you won't have command on the scene."
"Of course."
---
The fifteenth hour after Kara went missing.
Two black SWAT troop transport vehicles sped through the streets of Los Angeles, with Luo An driving the SUV closely behind and quickly overtaking them.
Reesi sat in the passenger seat, Michelle was in the back checking equipment in silence.
Wan De was also seated in the back, watching the scenery outside fly by as Luo An overtook other vehicles at astonishing angles. His complexion, which belonged to an older age, gradually turned pale, and his tone, losing its previous composure, trembled as he held onto the seat belt tightly and said:
"Deputy Group Leader Greenwood, there's no need to drive so fast, please pay more attention to safety."
"What? Not fast enough?"
Seeing that Wan De was just a bit scared and not yet physically ill, Luo An deliberately misheard his words, grinned, and floored the accelerator, increasing the SUV's speed to the next level:
"Don't worry! We'll definitely arrive at the scene before John dies!"
"..."
Wan De didn't speak, only looking at the rapidly retreating landscape outside and tightening his seat belt even more.
Reesi finished checking her equipment in the passenger seat. Following Luo An's instructions, she took out her phone and called Mona:
"How is it? Where does the positioning show John to be now?"
"Right in the abandoned industrial park Luo An had guessed before."
Mona on the other end of the call tapped the keyboard a few times and said:
"Three minutes ago, John parked the car there."
"Good."
Luo An quickly estimated the journey and said:
"We'll be arriving at the industrial park in five minutes."
"OK, be careful."
Mona briefly instructed and then hung up the call. Reesi was about to put the phone away when it suddenly rang again.
"It's me again, Mona."
Reesi pressed the answer button, and Mona on the call sounded somewhat urgent:
"Just now, LAPD received a report. The reporter claimed that there were sounds of intense gunfire coming from the industrial park you guys are headed to!"
