Legendary FBI Detective-Chapter 70: The Lake
In the melodious sound of the song, a young newlywed couple kissed each other in front of the priest, while their family and friends enthusiastically applauded, filling the church with an air of happiness.
In the hallway behind the church.
"Excuse me, Agent Sir."
One of the church administrators, an old priest with glasses and graying hair, after listening to Luo An's description, frowned in thought for a long while, then shook his head and said:
"I'm very sorry, but I really haven't seen the man you just described. I don't have any recollection of him at all."
Having said that, the old priest's expression paused, and he tilted his head towards the church's exterior, where passersby were eating the offered food, and said:
"You could ask them; some of them frequently participate in the offerings, and perhaps you could get some useful information from them."
"Okay, thank you, Father."
"You're welcome, may God bless you."
The old priest smiled and nodded at Luo An, leaving with a blessing and slowly walked away.
Turning around and looking through the glass at the newlyweds dancing and singing with their relatives and friends, and then thinking about the victims already lying in the morgue, Luo An's mouth slowly turned downward.
"Let's get together tomorrow night, it's a date! Bye..."
Reesi and a young Caucasian woman dressed as a nun hugged each other, chattering for a while, arranging to go out together tomorrow, and then she returned to Luo An's side and calmly said:
"The entire church only has one surveillance camera, and it's in the main hall where the newlyweds are holding their wedding ceremony. The surveillance range is only the hall; we can't use the surveillance footage to find the Caucasian male that Louise was talking about, the one standing in the corner outside the church."
"…Let's put the surveillance issue aside for now."
After a moment of silence, Luo An's expression and tone became more complex:
"You're not even sparing the nun?"
"What are you thinking?"
Reesi glanced at Luo An, wiping away the faint trace of lipstick on her face:
"Henna is a volunteer helping out the church, not a nun. She's wearing a nun's outfit just to match the setting here."
At this point, Reesi's mouth curved into a smile and her eyes sparkled as she murmured to herself, "But actually, I've never tried playing a nun before."
Luo An: "…"
"Luo An, I asked a few passersby who frequently come here for food."
Without waiting for Luo An to speak, the fully armed Reesi, ignoring the astonished looks of those around her, approached Luo An with a serious expression and said:
"One of them, a Scavenger, said he saw two Caucasian men yesterday morning, taking some food and chatting while standing in the corner.
One of the men's image is quite similar to the one described by Louise."
"Oh?"
Shifting his attention away from the trashy girl, Luo An brightened up after hearing Reesi's words and immediately said:
"You take the Scavenger and Louise back to headquarters right away, and at the same time contact the police sketch expert at headquarters.
Have them draw the images of the Caucasian male as described by the Scavenger and Louise to see if it's the same person."
"Got it."
Reesi nodded and turned to make the phone call when suddenly Luo An's Nokia rang.
"What is it, Mona?"
Picking up the phone, Luo An looked through the glass at several young white women dressed as nuns cleaning the hall, his mouth turning up slightly.
Don't mention Reesi, or the nuns, he also...
"I've found an important clue, Luo An!"
The voice of Mona on the other end of the phone was very grave, and immediately brought Luo An's attention back:
"Just five hours after Susan went missing, a gray sedan drove out from a small forest area 2.7 miles northwest of the Little Saint Phil Church, and there is a small lake in that forest area."
"Damn it!"
Luo An instantly cast aside the jumble of thoughts in his head, hurriedly pulled Reesi back to the SUV, and sped toward the forest area with a slam on the accelerator.
Layde didn't get in the car because he was taking the Scavenger and Louise back to the FBI New York headquarters for a composite sketch.
The pitch-black SUV zipped through the bustling streets like a blade, with Reesi swallowing hard and silently fastening her seatbelt on the passenger side, while Luo An continued to ask over the phone:
"Give me the details on the surveillance, Mona."
"OK."
Mona on the other end didn't beat around the bush and went straight to the point:
"Susan's disappearance took place in the old town area, which has no networked surveillance; therefore, as you requested, I shifted my focus to the main roads on the periphery of the old town, which are fully monitored.
Susan disappeared after 9:30 PM, around 9:35 PM to be exact. I calculated the time the sedan would reach each intersection after leaving the old town area, with a margin of error of ten minutes
...The result was that there were too many gray sedans to check."
Luo An turned the steering wheel and pressed down on the accelerator, easily overtaking a little Buick ahead while nodding at Mona's words.
It's normal for there to be a lot of cars starting at 9 PM when the nightlife begins.
"But then I suddenly thought that after killing someone, the murderer would dump the body in a lake."
At this point, Mona on the phone showed a smile:
"Your mention of cognitive inertia when you were looking for the kidnapper last time reminded me. I wondered whether this killer would also exhibit cognitive inertia, dumping the body in a lake after the murder. So, I started investigating nearby lakes.
Sure enough, five hours after Susan disappeared, a scene of a gray sedan coming out of a small copse with a lake was clearly captured by a small house on the edge of the forest area.
This small house was built by an old white man who often comes here to fish. Worried about his fishing gear being stolen, he installed a networked surveillance camera outside the house."
After hearing Mona's description, an odd expression crossed Luo An's face.
Indeed, a fisherman can catch anything but fish.
The source of this c𝓸ntent is freewebnøvel.coɱ.
"Right,"
The steering wheel suddenly twisted, and the pitch-black SUV sketched a semicircle on the ground, swiftly entering another road. Reesi's face changed slightly, but Luo An continued to inquire:
"Can you identify the owner of the gray sedan?"
"Can't do it."
Mona typed a few keys on the other end of the phone, her expression becoming frustrated:
"The gray sedan was passing horizontally in the surveillance camera, so I couldn't see the license plate. Also, the car disappeared after driving out of the forest area, and it's not been found on any of the main traffic arteries."
"OK, thank you for your effort, Mona."
Luo An's brow furrowed slightly, but he did not say much more, and after hanging up the phone, seeing not too many cars on the road ahead, he pressed down on the accelerator again, and the SUV's speed picked up a bit more.
Reesi: "....."
Tapan Forest Area is a moderately-sized forest. There are no large human habitation communities nearby, only a small community inhabited by a few dozen people.
So, besides the occasional weekend fisherman who comes to fish at the small lake on the west side of the forest area, the rest of the time, there are just occasional young couples seeking thrills by tasting the forbidden fruit.
Rui Wen and Ken were such a young couple.
