Chapter 105: The end of stalking
Forsyx just stayed on the wooden beam while flickering his tongue. It had been the whole day since he came here, and kind of an interestingly unproductive day at that.
The initial few seconds when Diana arrived were full of action.
Her guards started attacking all the hidden spies on the balcony.
Forsyx still remembered a guard randomly swinging his sword at an empty corner—and then, the next moment, a person jumped out, screaming in pain.
Then the guards hit one of the noblemen who was already on the balcony.
Before the others could reach him, the guy’s face transformed back, ending his disguise.
Those were really tense moments.
Forsyx had his heart up to his snake mouth as he stopped moving altogether.
He saw a female guard standing next to Diana. Her eyes were shining with a blue light as she looked around the 3rd floor and then pointed down.
Soon the guards came up, dragging two guys from the lower floor.
Not even five minutes in, and they had already caught four people.
The guard continued to use her eyes as she looked around, focusing extra hard on the roof.
At that time, Forsyx was ready to commit suicide at any moment—dying was much better than getting captured by them.
After a couple more moments of looking around, he saw the guard’s eyes return to normal as she nodded to Diana.
Diana took her seat as the guards dragged away the stalkers. Others also sat in their places like they were used to this.
Forsyx understood that the only reason he was safe was because he wasn’t using any continuous skill.
One thing that was common among the four who got caught was that they had all used some kind of mana skill.
One on the top floor was using a type of disguise and invisibility skill, while those on the bottom were likely using vision-based skills.
He was sure of this because he recognized the blue eyes of that female guard—it was some kind of mana detection skill.
To test his theory, he even slowly moved along the roof, going from one beam to another, but nobody noticed him.
That was the biggest relief—he realized he just had to avoid direct eye contact, and he would be safe.
This was another reason his class was far superior to any transformation or shapeshifting class.
It was just that he was locked in the snake form—he knew the moment he tried to shift, the guard would definitely notice him.
The next hour or two were pretty uneventful as Diana just stayed on the balcony, enjoying the fights going on below.
From Forsyx’s position, it was difficult to see what was happening in the arena, but based on the reactions of other nobles, he understood that Diana was winning.
It was around two hours in when he noticed the first movement.
Actually, Diana walked into a side room at the back of the third floor to rest.
From the other nobles’ conversations, he gathered that she was doing this to avoid the mayor’s son.
Even in snake form, it was hard for him to enter the private room since all her guards were standing in front of the door.
Slowly, he managed to slither into the room through one of the side ventilation holes, but when he entered, he saw only Diana, her female guard, and a man—all switching into disguises.
He also saw another door connected to the private room.
Diana had changed out of her luxurious one-piece dress into shabby, baggy clothes that covered the top part of her face.
The female guard, on the other hand, switched into shabby adventurer clothes, while the mysterious man in the room wore decent silk clothes—like most merchants.
Forsyx just sneaked into one of the flower baskets. His thin, green body helped him blend in with the flower stems.
Soon, Diana picked up the flower pot, and the three of them walked out of the fighting area through one of the random side gates.
From then on, it was a mess. The three started walking down random streets in the middle area, sometimes even venturing into the slum zones.
Forsyx was completely confused by all this as he saw them moving randomly. Was Diana one of those?
He had heard of nobles who loved to disguise themselves and live like normal people.
But the big difference between them and her was that she never made any attempt to talk with anyone.
All this time, she just cursed at people here and there under her breath.
But all his confusion cleared up when he suddenly noticed that the three were inching closer to the side of the city.
He observed them for a few minutes and realized that their seemingly random walking pattern was actually slowly inching toward a destination.
It didn’t take long for them to stop in front of a rundown tavern.
From the outside, the building looked like it was on its last leg and might collapse at any moment.
Not caring about any of that, the three of them entered the tavern.
Barely anyone was inside except for a thin owner behind the counter.
The owner smiled at Diana.
"Good to see you, Princess Trann."
At this, Diana placed the flower basket on the side and asked point-blank,
"What’s the situation?"
The owner just pointed to the side. "Why don’t you come and see for yourself."
With that, the owner opened a path that led underground.
Forsyx was not sure what happened inside, as he didn’t dare to move out of the basket. For the first time, he felt a strange sense of discomfort when he tried to move.
The feeling that something bad might happen. He realized it must be his intuition, so not taking any risks, he just stayed in the basket motionless.
Diana spent the next 3–4 hours down there. He saw her coming out with a wide grin on her face.
They didn’t waste any more time and started moving back to the area, this time using another route.
Before long, all of them were back in the private room and started removing their disguises, returning to their original clothing. That’s when he realized the man who had led Diana and her guard was actually her slave.
No matter which angle he looked at it from, it was bizarre for a noblewoman to follow her slave to some shady place.
Not long after, Diana and her guard moved back to the balcony like nothing had happened, and the slave also walked away along another path.
Forsyx waited a bit longer and then crawled back to his initial wooden beam.
Even after Diana had left, he stayed there, as there were still other nobles present.
As the sun was about to fully set, one after another, the nobles on the third floor started to leave.
In the end, only Forsyx was left alone on that floor.
He looked at the private room for a couple of seconds and decided not to investigate further.
He didn’t want to drag himself into more mess. He just slowly crawled out of the tavern.
Just to be extra safe, he slithered at least tens of meters away from the building. Finally, he mumbled,
"Shift to Peplier bird."
The next moment, a white bird appeared in the snake’s place.
Forsyx flapped his wings and soared into the dark sky.
The sun had already gone down, and even the city streets were full of lights from the mana lamps.
It was a bit difficult to focus in the darkness, as the contrast between the dark sky around him and the bright light below made it hard on his bird eyes.
It was clear that Peplier birds weren’t built to fly in the night sky. Still, he forced himself to fly toward the tavern.
From above, he just made a mental note of the direction where the tavern was, inside the slum area.
He took note of a few of the big shops that Diana had walked past when coming into the slum area.
Now, he didn’t care whether she had taken just a random route or followed some fixed pattern.
All he wanted was for his report to have depth—depth that showed his skill and ability to the quest giver.
After following Diana for the entire day, he was sure that something big might be brewing inside the city.
He checked the time—it was already 8 in the evening, with only an hour left before the prohibited hall opened.
It was kind of strange that the biggest illegal operation in the city only worked in the morning.
Not wasting any more time, he switched back to his human form and bought paper and an ink pen from a random store.
He also took out Xerk’s report and added the initial section about Diana coming out of the core region and the final section about her going back to the core region from that report.
The middle section was an in-depth account of what he had seen, along with time stamps.
Being a player helped him keep track of the time, as he could check it anytime by opening his status.
After making sure he had written everything, he placed it inside an envelope and walked to the prohibited hall.
