Life didn't get easier, even in another world-Chương 414: His plan
Chương 414: His plan
The more he thought of it, the more suspicious he got. Roy's calculations, although seemingly logical and acceptable, had a huge flaw in them.
The whole plan needed a strong power source to be triggered, a source that contained enormous amounts of universal powers. To Reynold's knowledge, there was no such object in this world, neither anywhere else. Even if such a thing existed in a world, it could easily start up a catastrophe by attracting a huge mass of Chaos, so such an object couldn't be created or stored.
There was only one thing that could contain such power without resulting in immediate destruction: A human's soul.
"The day is near. I must head to the fourth temple to complete the preparation."
Their original plan was to deflect the wave of Chaos back into the chain using universal powers as a barrier to shield this world. That way, the Chaos would collide with the remaining Irregularity and Chaos, and if they were lucky enough, cancel each other out.
"Will you be able to take care of things alone?"
Roy paused in the middle of packing his papers and raised his head. His crimson pupils landed on the young boy and lingered in his facial features for a few seconds before shifting elsewhere.
"I'll manage somehow."
It might've been hard to notice for anyone else, but the slight ripple of emotions in the man's face couldn't escape Reynold's gaze.
He had an ominous feeling.
"Why, let me tag along."
"...."
The man halted again. There was a mixture of willingness and anxiety on his face that expressed his conflicted mind.
"Is there anything wrong with me joining you? I think I've helped enough in building up all those temples that I deserve to see how they are used and the way that the plan proceeds."
A slight quiver to his lips, and then a faint smile, "No, of course, there is nothing wrong. Pack your stuff and prepare to leave."
"Alright."
It was certain that there was something off.
And if this man's intentions were as Reynold guessed, there was no way he'd allow that to happen.
.....
The distance between their village and the fourth temple wasn't much.
It was the two of them at first, but just before they could leave, Arthur appeared out of nowhere and begged to be taken as well. Despite Reynold's desire and his expectations, the swordsman was allowed to join the party by Roy.
Thus, the group of four traveled by their horses for five days until they reached their destination.
There wasn't much to the fourth temple, only a high platform, tall walls, and a machine at the center of it all. There was also a small room built inside to rest and stay at night while working on the construction. Reynold still remembered how much he took advantage of Arthur's naiveness to force him into manual labor while working on this temple.
'It must be tonight.'
Strolling through his mister's notes, Reynold noticed a date mentioned in most of the calculations. And that day was finally here. However, he didn't need to check on the date to understand that something special would happen, as he could easily guess it by watching Roy who had been restless since last night and hadn't slept a wink till dawn. He has been moving around since morning, not even stopping to eat.
"Are you really sure we need this much material?"
Arthur glanced at the paper given to him, filled to the brim with various ingredients, then back at his friend.
"Yes, please purchase them all."
"Do we even have the money?"
"Yes, don't worry about it."
"But how am I supposed to carry them all here? And the city is so far away?!"
The temple was built in the middle of nowhere, on top of a hill and beside a jungle, so it was difficult to find and also far away from any city.
"It's alright. You can stay there and wait for us. We'll return in one day anyway."
"Hm..." Arthur tilted his head, "Why do I feel like you want to intentionally send me away?"
The blonde boy who seemed dumb all the time, and actually was indeed dumb, scratched his head in confusion and suspicion.
"Huh? Why would I?"
"But you are so suspicious. Tell me the truth!"
"How can you think of me like that? What kind of person do I seem to you?"
Reynold's amber eyes widened in shock, his face turning dejected and sullen.
"Alright alright. Don't make such a face. I'll leave right away. Okay!"
Sighing in defeat and retreating back, Arthur raised his hands up as if in surrender and gradually left the temple, moving to the nearby city to purchase the ton of materials Reynold asked him of.
It was sunset, and the sky was the same color as Arthur's hair, Reynold thought while watching him leave. He watched his good friend depart until his back completely disappeared from sight. The thin smile didn't vanish from his lips for even a second.
Something would happen tonight, and he knew that this incident wasn't something an ordinary person with zero tolerance for universal powers could endure. He couldn't allow a friend to get involved in the mess his mister had created and probably get hurt.
'I also can't let him witness such a scene.'
This mister of his was truly stupid, wasn't he? Despite being a genius in many aspects and a mysterious man with a long lifespan, he really was somewhat off in his head. Reynold couldn't help but feel frustrated deep down in his heart.
Raising his head and casting his gaze at the dome above, Reynold heaved a sigh upon noticing it was already around nighttime. Nightfall would arrive soon, and so would other unwelcoming guests.
"Did you send that boy out?"
Reynold responded to the voice from behind without turning back.
"Yeah, we can't put him in danger, can we?"
"...."
Receiving no response, Reynold's gaze sank down to the machine at the center of the temple. It was smoothly operating, making tickling sounds from time to time.
"Or did you not consider him at all? Was he here just to keep an eye on me?"
Tap. Reynold took a step closer to the machine, walking in the direction of the central platform.
"...What do you mean?"
Instead of giving Roy an answer, Reynold asked another question.
New novel 𝓬hapters are published on ƒreewebɳovel.com.
"Tell me, Mister, this whole new plan of yours aims to dissociate Chaos rather than changing its course, right? And you've also adjusted the machines and changed the temple structures for that."
There was no time to change them back and even if he did stop Roy at first, the eliminated parts couldn't be recreated in mere few days.
"...."
Noticing a baffled look emerge on the redhead's face, Reynold couldn't help but let out a chuckle.
"And to do that, there needs to be a power source. A battery."
"How do you-"
"How do I know?"
As the boy circled on his heels, his baggy robe fluttered and his long hair danced around in the air. His hair was loosely tied back behind his neck, a hairstyle he'd first seen in his Mister, and his oversized robe was the same design as the ones previously worn by Roy, only different in color.
"Mister, I've been living with the things you left behind for more than ten years."
How could he not understand? How could he not notice?
"Wait, Reyn, what are you doing?"
Tatap!
Reynold jumped atop the platform with a light leap.
"So, what can be used as a battery here?"
Again, he didn't respond to Roy but kept on talking to himself.
"Come down from there first!"
A hint of anxiety flashed through Roy's eyes for the first time, all remaining colors escaping his face at once.
"What's a better choice for a power source than a human soul containing universal powers, right?"
"Reyn!"
Reaching out his hand, Reynold gently touched the machine now in front of him, grazing its cold, metallic surface and feeling its texture.
"How foolish of you."
To think he'd talk to his mister using this kind of language, how unpredictable of life he had.
"Reyn!"
As if finally realizing what the boy intended to do, the redhead yelled in a disgruntled voice and took a large step forward, rushing towards the platform.
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
BANG
However, his body was stopped from moving forward by slamming against an invisible something and Roy was flung back, much less to his expectations. His body rolled on the ground once before he regained his balance and sat up, staring dazedly at the silver and golden barrier in front of him.
"Why do you look so shocked? I was the one who built up this place so why not set up a few traps that only I could activate?"
This was a display of his cautiousness, mixed with his ability to wield universal power at will. Although, he never thought he'd use these traps this way.
"....What do you want to do?"
One look at the barrier and one look at the boy standing atop the platform, Roy stood up from his sprawled position, clenching his hands into fists as if ready to beat up the young man to a pulp.
It was at that moment,
