Chapter 33 - Advice

The next day, Holo sat in one of the counseling rooms, waiting for his scheduled session with Scarlet. Even though she had made progress in her behavior, the facility required periodic meetings to monitor her development. Today, however, Holo wasn't thinking about Scarlet's progress—his mind was preoccupied with Eleanor's harsh words from the day before.

When Scarlet walked in, she immediately noticed the troubled look on his face. Her sharp blue eyes narrowed, and she tilted her head slightly, her movements deliberate and calculated. "You look like someone just punched you in the gut," she said, taking a seat across from him. "What's wrong?"

Holo sighed, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees. "It's Eleanor," he admitted. "She's... she's different from you and the others. She's not opening up at all. And yesterday, she said some things that really got to me."

Scarlet's eyes darkened, her calm demeanor giving way to a spark of anger. "What did she say to you?" she asked, her voice cold and steady.

"She called me a liar," Holo said, his voice heavy. "She said I'm just using all of you for money, that I'm not really helping anyone. And... she reminded me that I didn't take this job out of the goodness of my heart. She's not wrong, but..."

"But it still hurts to hear," Scarlet finished for him, her lips curling into a slight frown. "Of course it does. That's what she does."

"What do you mean?" Holo asked, his brow furrowing.

Scarlet leaned back in her chair, crossing her legs gracefully. "Eleanor and I are two sides of the same coin," she said. "We both manipulate people. But while I use my abilities to get what I want, Eleanor uses hers to tear people down."

Holo tilted his head, confusion flickering in his eyes. "Tear people down?"

Scarlet nodded, her expression grim. "She's not interested in gaining power or control like I am. She doesn't want people to adore her or give her what she wants. She wants to break them, to make them question everything they believe in. It's her way of proving that nothing in this world is worth holding onto."

Holo's chest tightened as Scarlet's words sank in. "Why would she do that?"

"Because it's how she protects herself," Scarlet said simply. "If she can make everyone else fall apart, then she doesn't have to face her own pain. It's easier for her to believe that the world is full of lies and weakness than to admit that she's just as fragile as the rest of us."

Holo stared at her, his mind racing. "You seem to understand her pretty well."

Scarlet smirked faintly, though her eyes remained serious. "Like I said, we're two sides of the same coin. I see parts of myself in her, and I'm sure she sees parts of herself in me. But there's one big difference between us."

"What's that?" Holo asked.

"You gave me something to hold onto," Scarlet said, her voice softening. "Something to believe in. That's why I'm here, sitting across from you, instead of trying to manipulate you into giving me what I want. But Eleanor? She hasn't found that yet. And until she does, she'll keep tearing people apart, because that's all she knows."

Holo leaned back in his chair, her words hitting him harder than he expected. "So what do I do?" he asked quietly. "How do I get through to her?"

Scarlet shrugged, her smirk returning. "You're the one who got through to me, Trixie, and Felicia. Figure it out, darling. You're good at this."

Holo sighed, running a hand through his hair. "You're not making this any easier, Scarlet."

"I'm not here to make it easy," she said with a teasing grin. "But seriously, Holo... don't let her words get to you. She's trying to break you, and you can't let her win."

He nodded, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Thanks, Scarlet."

"Anytime," she said, leaning forward and giving him a playful wink. "But if she tries to hurt you again, let me know. I'll handle her."

Holo chuckled softly, though he knew she wasn't entirely joking. As the session came to an end, he felt a renewed sense of determination. Eleanor might have been right about his initial intentions, but Scarlet's words reminded him of how far he had come—and how far he still had to go.
