Katherine, who left Leon and the miners behind, was running towards the temple with all her speed.
The closer she got to the battlefield, the more restless her heart grew to be.
She herself didn't know what she was worried about.
But when she saw the strange natural phenomenons, felt the burn from the energy shockwaves which had almost destroyed the dungeon, or the deep craters and the sword marks where each swing left a lasting scar on the ground – she couldn't help but clench her hands on her sword and run faster.
"Just what kind of monster is he up against?" She asked herself, and as if to answer her, a huge shadow of fist appeared out of nowhere and blasted the sky.
Leaving a gaping hole in the clouds which even the air didn't dare to fill.
She looked back down and noticed a pillar of light shooting in the sky, as if a stairway from heaven had descended, and at the end.. or rather the beginning _ was a god standing there.
"...What the hell is that?" She muttered in disbelief as she looked forward and noticed a pillar of light which burned her eyes and forced her to look away.
[...Aelthar.] Mara, who saw the scene from the skies and felt this presence more clearly due to her avatar being so close, couldn't help but whisper in surprise.
She recognized him.
And why wouldn't she. After all, the goddess of ice had indeed faced off against the god of fog in the warzone years ago.
And before they could decide the victor, the cowardly Aelthar had slipped past her fingers, relying on that weird fog.
[This feeling _ _ no doubt, it's him.]
[So the coward's been hiding here all these years.]
[His fog, … I can finally get my hands on it.]
[Girl, go there and get me his legacy. Do this, and I will fulfill all your wishes.]
Katherine stood there frozen in shock, which she only came out from when she heard that final sentence from her goddess, who couldn't seem to hide her excitement.
But even then, Katherine couldn't calm down or hear her goddess, her focus simply on the fact, that He was up against a God.
"I hope he's fine." She muttered under her breath, and rushed ahead directly. Ignoring all obstacles in her path.
By the time she reached the land shrouded in light, she only saw the scene of Aelthar waving his hand and Rio's worn out body helplessly moving towards him.
Anger clouded her mind when her eyes landed on the various injuries he had, and how he struggled to breath - her cold heart burning in an unfamiliar fury so much so that she ignored every threat, every thought _ and immediately pulled her sword to slash at the god.
…
Aelthar, who had Rio's life in his hands, sensed someone rushing behind him and sneered in his heart.
Ever since he showed his true form and broke the barrier of night, he had sensed the presence of Nyx's followers.
The hooded figures, who surrounded his temple from every direction. Guarding a newly inscribed formation which could block his escape.
Knowing the reach and rumors regarding Nyx, he didn't try to break this trap, as he was sure it would be quite tricky, and tedious. So he was just waiting for them to make a move and then just kill them together with this mortal.
In fact, luring them in, was the only reason he didn't just snap the mortal's neck first second.
But now that someone was finally impatient enough to leave their post, his wait was over.
…
Before Katherine's attack could land on the god's back, Aelthar immediately turned around, _ but just as he did, a chill swept over his back. – and along with a gust of wind, came a harrowing pain which made him scream in agony.
…
Rio, who had already injured the god's soul to his last straw of strength, ignored the god's grip around his neck, and waited in patience for his perfect moment.
After beating Aelthar senselessly using his original sword art, he was sure if he pushed further, the god would just turn into a turtle and keep playing defense. Which would just drag out their fight. – which in turn would only make his life more miserable, as he'd need to show more of his strength.
So when he saw Aelthar suddenly snap and put in his final effort, he knew this was it.
That's why he gave up all resistance and let himself be dragged in those hands. Acting as if he was finally worn out and helpless.
His pretend cowardice, finally giving courage and confidence to the foolish chicken.
..
The play was running smoothly and the hidden dagger inscribed in nether runes was already lighting up under his sleeves, ready to land the final blow.
When just as he raised his arm to attack, Katherine popped up out of nowhere, pulling the god's attention with her shout. Forcing him to turn back.
…
Rio watched as the dagger which would've slashed the god's trachea, causing the nether to directly sabotage his soul. _ instead collided against his vertebrae. The top end of his spine, which though hurt a lot, but was nowhere near fatal enough.
..
"Fuck…" Rio cursed in annoyance of his failure. His shout submerging under the scream of the god.
…
Instead of pondering over the past, Rio immediately tried to fix his mistake.
Summoning his sword in the other hand and stabbing it forward with even more craze __ but it seemed no matter how fast his reactions were, the god's were faster.
A fog spread all around him, blocking all his sight. Blinding him for a brief moment.
But then, _ his lips curled up in a cruel smile, as he felt his sword ignore another wave of energy and finally plunge into something.
The warm blood splashed on his fingers, and Rio couldn't help but twist his sword some more, to grant the god a more painful death.
…
Two seconds ago. (After the initial attack.)
Aelthar stood there with his hand over his neck, feeling the sharp cut and warm blood gush over his fingers.
His Heart Shocked, over How Close he was, To his true Death.
For a moment, when he looked at the glaring girl in front of him, - he couldn't help but feel grateful towards her.
Had she not come, and he didn't turn around _-_ The god didn't even dared to think further for what might have happened.
But after suffering such a blow, he did learn the lesson to not underestimate that mortal again.
Seizing the brief second, when even Rio was too shocked to react, - the god immediately used all his strength to spread the fog all around him, and disappeared from his place.
…
Katherine, who was already mid-air, her sword swinging at the god, was too late to react when she noticed Rio trying to shake his head, or get ready to kill the god.
Her final movements followed the gravity, and as her sword was about to collide against Aelthar, he surprised her by suddenly turning around.
Her body instantly froze in fear when she met the god's eyes. The passive of superiority taking effect on her mortal mind.
For the next second, she could just stare helplessly at the air as the god disappeared from her sight. Leaving behind a fog which blocked everything.
But before she could say anything, warn Rio about the gone god, or apologize to him that she messed up his attack – she felt a sword ignore all her defenses and directly pierce her flesh.
"Ughhh"
She groaned in pain and couldn't help but cough up some blood, as the metal twisted in her body.
…
…
…
The fight was over.
The victor was decided.

Aelthar lost.
And Rio had finally won.
But as the dust settled, and the fog cleared, - his smile couldn't help but turn into utter shock.
His face filled with dread and disbelief.
His body starting to shake, while his hands let go of his sword, and stepped back several steps.
His eyes, previously filled with pride, - now only showed pain, and horror.
Horror, as he looked at his palms not bathed in the golden ichor. But in the red blood of someone he once called a friend.
…
…
As if a switch had been triggered, - Or a shackle had been broken, - Memories he had long locked and buried. - Memories, he had forced his mind to forget. – All started to appear right in front of him.
From the first time when he met Kajal (now Katherine) back on earth, _ from how she kept persisting and following him till he agreed and became her friend, _ from how she stayed with him even when everyone he loved either left and betrayed him, _ to how he broke her beliefs, and took her life on the same day she proposed her love to him.
It was breaking his heart.
The memories, the pain, the trauma _ all of it was simply too much.
His shaky steps, which had just moved towards her, instinctively, instantly gave up and went limp as he watched her fall to the ground.
He too fell on his back and crawled further back when his eyes locked onto hers for the final time.
"Arghhhhhhhhhhhh" He screamed in his mind, yet no words came out of his heavy throat.
He felt like something was stuck in his chest, and he couldn't help but hold it tightly. His nails digging deep into his skin till blood trickled out.
Yet he seemed to not even feel a thing.
Tears kept streaming down his face, while his right hand kept slapping the ground nonstop. As if only by breaking all the skin on his palms, could he bury the signs of her blood on his hands.
…
The scene in front of him now and the scene from back on his life on earth felt eerily similar at this moment.
The familiar face of his dear friend was right in front of him, but not with the smile he promised to protect - but with the pain he caused himself.
History repeats itself.
And for his cursed fate, it just repeated it's darkest chapter.

Author note - Damn
Katherine's fate is sad fr.
But, that aside, now u know what happened to her back on earth. And why Rio remembered everything, and everyone else, but only forgot about her.
If the people he failed back on earth were to be listed accordingly - surely, she'd be at the top of it.
She gave her everything for him, – and he just took everything she had.
….
Aelthar, you fucking fool, you're just about to realize, how badly you have messed up by dodging that sword and moving away.
Trust me, death would've been a million times more merciful, than what an angry Rio can do when he's not right in his head.
Devil isn't a title earned by the power he holds, or the supremacy he was born with _ it's the essence of darkness his heart is capable of showing.
And for the first time, since coming to Arcadia, his inner rage, was about to show the real him.
Praise be the devil.
