Chapter 44: Chapter 44: New Look

Rick, the tough blacksmith with a permanent frown, narrowed his eyes. "If by sword you mean flirting, then yes, I heard every word."

"Cough!"

Lira cleared her throat loudly and busied herself pretending to inspect a pile of imaginary paperwork.

"A-anyway, Master Rick, Ryu has returned with the sword and license as promised," Lira said, clearing her throat and stepping aside.

Rick turned his gaze toward Ryu, giving a small approving nod. "Well done, kid. And it looks like you’ve already leveled up a few times. Not bad. In the beginning stages, that’s to be expected, but the hard work really starts from here."

Ryu tilted his head slightly, intrigued. Rick seemed to know much more about System Users than most.

"Master Rick, you seem very knowledgeable... do you have a system too?"

"Yes," Rick replied simply, returning to his workbench. "I have a Blacksmith System. It helps me forge weapons no ordinary blacksmith could manage."

Ryu’s eyes lit up with curiosity. "That sounds amazing! What level are you at, Master Rick?"

Rick chuckled but didn’t look up. "I can’t tell you that, kid. If I did, it might kill your motivation."

Ryu blinked, caught off guard by the comment. Rick continued with a chuckle in his voice.

"Still, a combat-type system like yours is far more important in this world. Systems like mine don’t make you nearly as strong. At most, we support the frontline. That’s just the reality of it."

Ryu took in every word, then replied with sincerity, "But I believe your role is just as important, Master Rick. Without your weapons, how would Hunters like us stand a chance against Hollows? Your work gives us strength and confidence. I really mean that."

Rick paused his hammering, then burst into a hearty laugh.

"You’re a smooth-talking kid, I’ll give you that. Just make sure you don’t end up charming the wrong person and losing your head for it!"

"I’ll keep that in mind," Ryu said before leaving the shop. "Thank you for the gift. One day, I’ll return the favor by giving you the entire city."

"Pffft... He’s joking, right, Master Rick?" Lira laughed, raising an eyebrow.

Rick couldn’t help but smile as he watched Ryu’s figure disappear down the street. "Who knows?"

From there, Ryu entered a small clothing shop tucked between a weapon stall and a potion vendor. A bell jingled as he stepped inside.

The shop had a neat interior, lined with racks of worn but well-maintained garments. A young man with slicked-back hair and unusually smooth eyebrows stepped forward with a welcoming smile.

"What can I get for you, customer?" he asked politely.

Ryu glanced at the rows of clothes, most of which looked plain but durable.

"Just something decent and cheap. Nothing flashy," he replied, keeping it simple.

The shopkeeper’s smile widened slightly as he gave Ryu a once-over, his eyes gleaming with the insight of someone who’d sized up a thousand customers before him.

"A practical man. I like that. And judging by your build, you’re a Hunter, aren’t you?"

Ryu didn’t answer, but his faint nod was enough.

"Perfect. I’ve got just the thing for you. Please, follow me," the shopkeeper said, motioning toward the back section.

The shopkeeper led Ryu toward a side wall where a rack of more refined garments hung behind a curtain.

"These are our Hunter-specials," he said proudly. "They are crafted with treated beast hide and reinforced fiber threading. Not as flashy as enchanted gear, but they’ll hold up against minor slashes and scratches. And they’re easy to move in. You can also use them for regular use."

Ryu ran his fingers across the fabric. It was flexible but firm, a dark earthy brown mixed with deep charcoal black. The shoulders were layered with light leather padding. The chest and abdomen were reinforced with hidden paneling stitched beneath the fabric. The pants were snug yet breathable, with small leather guards at the knees and thighs. It even came with a utility belt and fingerless gloves.

"This one here is 20 silver. A bit more expensive than regular wear, but far better for someone planning to stay alive in the wild."

"I’ll take it," Ryu said without hesitation.

Minutes later, after changing in the back, Ryu stepped out wearing the full set. The fit was snug, almost tailored to his new physique. The ensemble gave him a sleek but rugged appearance, his silver-gold eyes and white hair making him look like someone not to be underestimated.

The shopkeeper gave a satisfied nod. "Now you look like a proper Hunter. The coat’s treated with beast oil too. It’ll resist light rain and keep off Hollow scent for a few hours."

"Good. That’s exactly what I need. But I need another pair of ordinary clothes for comfortable stay in the house." Ryu replied, while fastening the final belt strap.

"Sure, they’ll add it up to 25 Silver."

"25? Can it not be a little less?"

"No, Sir. No bargaining."

Ryu sighed pulled up the coins from his pouch. freёwebnoѵel.com

After paying the 25 silver, he took the bag, gave a curt nod and stepped out into the city streets.

The passersby gave Ryu curious glances as he walked down the bustling streets. He was fresh new face among the many Hunters, so he stood out just enough to draw attention.

Clad in a sleek black coat that rippled lightly with every step, a crimson-red shirt beneath it, and fitted black leather pants held by a silver-buckled belt, he carried an aura of a hunter.

His fair skin contrasted sharply with his snow-white hair that shimmered under the afternoon light, and his golden-tinged eyes gave him a striking appearance.

He looked young, fresh, and ready.

At 5’ 5", he was not the tallest, but there was something about his posture and presence that made others instinctively take a second look.

Clothes really did make a man. The saying rang true as he walked with subtle confidence, blending into the crowd of experienced hunters. Around him were others, some clad in heavier enchanted gear, others wearing flashy armor polished to a reflection.

But Ryu fit in naturally, his outfit giving him the air of a hunter just stepping onto the road of greatness.

Eventually, he made his way back to his small rental home nestled at the edge of a quiet alley. This time, no one was waiting outside. The space felt still, oddly undisturbed. No sounds came from the lower floor either. The usual clatter and shouting from the Versalon family, who lived below, were absent.

Ryu frowned slightly, glancing toward the window. "Strange," he murmured to himself. "Did something happen downstairs?"

Shaking off the thought, he focused on the moment and stepped inside. As soon as he closed the door behind him, he summoned Grakar.

With a soft ripple in space, a flash of black and violet mist unfurled, and the Abyssal Hydrajaw Crocodile appeared beside him, quickly shrinking into a more compact form to fit the room.

Grakar blinked, looking around the modest home with sparkling eyes. The polished wooden floors, simple yet well-kept furniture, and soft sunlight pouring through the curtain gaps filled the room with a warm charm.

"Lord, is this your human house? It looks beautiful. And... what is the word... ’farnished’?" he said, beaming in awe.

"Furnished," Ryu corrected with a grin. "Yes, it’s ours for now. But don’t get too excited. Try not to make too much noise. In the lower floor, the owner’s family lives. You can sleep in the spare room or read some books if you’re bored."

Grakar scratched his chin thoughtfully. "But I can’t read, My Lord."

Ryu raised an eyebrow, still smiling. "Then clean the house. Make yourself useful."

Grakar stood tall and thumped his chest with pride. "As you command, My Lord. I shall clean this place as if it were the throne hall of the Dragon Realm itself."

Ryu chuckled and tossed him a rag. "Just don’t break anything in your enthusiasm."

Grakar sniffed the rag and nodded seriously, as if it were a sacred relic.
