Live Strong in the Wilderness-Chapter 246: Another Harvest
After dinner, Xu Yi and Lu Ke placed the pottery clay into the earth kiln, then started the fire at the bottom of the kiln.
Lu Ke was responsible for tending the flames, while Xu Yi grabbed a machete and went to saw wood.
After slaughtering a Giant Emu, Xu Yi was no longer fearful of them, so he sawed down a few trees nearby.
As for the tree trunks, Xu Yi couldn’t do much without an axe for chopping wood, so he could only cut off the branches to burn.
Fortunately, these branches were quite thick, some even thicker than Xu Yi’s thigh.
The fire burned until past 11 o’clock, when Lu Ke went to rest.
The remaining flames could probably burn for another hour or two.
When Lu Ke went to sleep, Xu Yi practiced his Fighting Techniques a bit more before going to bed.
The next day, as usual, Lu Ke woke up at six o’clock sharp.
Because she needed to practice more Fighting Techniques, she had to wake up early.
If she woke up like Xu Yi at around 7, she’d miss an hour of training time.
The sky was somewhat dark, not yet bright.
However, Lu Ke had already gotten used to it.
First, she looked around and then listened carefully; once she confirmed there was no movement, she would go downstairs.
Once downstairs, she first rekindled the campfire.
Generally speaking, the campfire wouldn’t last until dawn, but some embers would still remain.
She blew at the charcoal until it glowed, then got the fire going.
After the campfire started burning, Lu Ke would fetch some water from the bucket to boil.
This way, by the time she finished the Eighteen Forms of Body Strengthening, the water would be boiled. The water could then be stored in bamboo tubes for drinking when going out.
Once packed, she kept the fire going. This way, there was no need to dedicate time just to boil water.
While practicing Fighting Techniques, Lu Ke could also boil several pots of water, ensuring all the water needed for the day was ready.
As long as it didn’t rain, the weather here was quite hot and muggy, resulting in higher water consumption.
Over an hour later, Xu Yi woke up and opened his eyes.
He was still covered with Lu Ke’s wolf fur coat, which had a faint fragrance.
The temperatures kept dropping, especially in the morning; without enough heat from the fire in the house, it was even colder.
Especially since Xu Yi and Lu Ke didn’t have blankets yet; only Lu Ke had the fur coat.
But soon there would be blankets; the fur had nearly dried, and that night they planned to smoke it for curing. Once cured, Xu Yi could have a coat made and also a blanket.
"System, check-in," Xu Yi said, completing his check-in after opening his eyes.
Now, the anticipation for the Basic Gift Package grew stronger for Xu Yi.
Skills, he needed more skills.
Only then could he persevere until the end and live more comfortably.
If it was constantly in survival mode, it would be too exhausting.
To truly feel like a vacation, it needed to feel like vacation; only then is it enjoyable!
The next package was the 77-day package.
They were from room 77 in the live-stream; maybe there would be another surprise?
After checking in, Xu Yi went downstairs.
After greeting Lu Ke, Xu Yi began practicing the Eighteen Forms of Body Strengthening and Fighting Techniques.
After practice, they ate some jerky.
"Xu Yi, should we check if the pottery is done now, or should we wait until we return?" Lu Ke glanced at Xu Yi; she was eager to open the earth kiln and take a look since morning.
"Let’s check now; we don’t need to rush out," Xu Yi replied with a smile, considering they had enough jerky and weren’t in a hurry to hunt.
"Alright, let’s go have a look." Saying this, Lu Ke headed toward the earth kiln.
They removed the pottery shards on top and then took out the items inside.
"It’s cracked." The first pottery jar Lu Ke pulled out was cracked, which made her quite frustrated.
They continued taking out the pottery, finding that one-third had failed.
Lu Ke accepted this success rate.
"With the pots, we can make pickles and salted vegetables." Lu Ke said happily, looking at the successful pots. She had not only crafted quite a few tableware items but also three pots, with only one broken.
"Yes, once the fur coats are ready, I’ll take a trip to the seaside," said Xu Yi, picking up the pottery pots. Both pots hadn’t been damaged, making daily water boiling more convenient.
"Not me, but us. I’ll need to go with you too," Lu Ke corrected, given they had to stay overnight outside; how could Lu Ke let Xu Yi go alone?
The two of them going together meant they could alternate sleeping hours, making it less exhausting and somewhat safer.
"Alright, we’ll go together," Xu Yi agreed immediately.
Xu Yi and Lu Ke moved all the pottery to the first floor, arranging the tableware on the table.
"We still need a teapot, a hot pot, and perhaps a few more pots, then we’ll be set," Lu Ke said contentedly. They now had 5 large bowls, 4 small bowls, 4 large plates, 3 cups, 2 large ladles, providing a complete set of tableware.
After securing the door, stowing the ladder, they shouldered their baskets and weapons, then headed out.
They needed to check the traps they set up yesterday to see if any reindeer were caught.
Upon reaching the spot, Xu Yi found the three traps had yielded no results.
"Before I was interested in them, they’d always appear. Now, catching one is this difficult!" Lu Ke complained helplessly, feeling as if the organizers had done something behind the scenes.
"No need to be hasty; we’ll catch one sooner or later," Xu Yi reassured, knowing it’s not a matter that urgency could resolve.
Lu Ke nodded, followed beside Xu Yi, and continued toward the depths of the forest.
Suddenly, Lu Ke noticed Xu Yi quicked his pace, running over to a giant dead tree.
Xu Yi must have discovered something, so he ran over.
"Xu Yi, can these wild mushrooms be eaten?" Lu Ke asked upon observing.
"Of course, these are shiitake mushrooms; they’re definitely edible. There’s so many, probably fifty or sixty pounds; we’ve hit the jackpot today," Xu Yi said excitedly, then took off his basket.
On the dead tree, densely packed shiitake mushrooms grew in large numbers.
"So these are shiitakes, so many cracks!" Lu Ke observed, picking one. She wasn’t particularly fond of mushrooms, so she hadn’t seen shiitakes before.
Then, she joined Xu Yi in picking the mushrooms and placing them into the baskets.
S hiitakes are precious; their flesh is plump, tender, with a rich flavor, unique aroma, high nutritional content, and medicinal benefits, offering significant health value.
