Live Strong in the Wilderness-Chapter 302: Two Dead, Two Escaped
The Giant Wolf saw Xu Yi’s machete swing open and quickly turned around, leaping to the side, then tucked its tail and ran away.
Because Xu Yi and Lu Ke’s attacks were too terrifying.
They deeply felt the threat of death, even the two Giant Wolves killed by the Bear Beast didn’t make such wretched cries.
The tied-up Giant Ha also tucked its tail, letting out a whimper.
The reindeer was trembling, lying on the ground, watching Xu Yi chase after the Giant Wolf.
Lu Ke drew his spear and stabbed it into the body of the Giant Wolf, causing its screams to grow louder. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
The fourth Giant Wolf didn’t dare to bite at Lu Ke, it retreated step by step.
However, it faced Lu Ke’s attack, the spear straightaway stabbed over, making it dodge quickly.
It chose to escape decisively, just like the one attacked by Xu Yi.
Death, whether human or other animals, is feared by all.
Xu Yi chased a certain distance but didn’t catch up with the Giant Wolf, so he stopped in his tracks.
His speed still couldn’t match the Giant Wolf’s, and it was escaping at even faster speeds than usual.
Lu Ke’s situation was the same as Xu Yi’s, so he also gave up the pursuit.
After returning, Xu Yi took Lu Ke’s spear and stabbed the two Giant Wolves to death.
"Killed a Giant Wolf, gained 9 points."
Instantly, Xu Yi and Lu Ke got 18 points.
"Let’s go, first chase the Bear Beast, see if we can find it," Xu Yi said, then he flipped onto the back of the reindeer.
However, the reindeer seemed too scared, it spun in place and refused to chase after.
Giant Ha, despite being scared, was at least able to be controlled.
Chasing by foot was impossible, so Xu Yi decided to ride Giant Ha himself to pursue the Bear Beast.
After all, it’s worth 20 points, and it’s alone; Xu Yi felt he couldn’t let the 20 points slip away.
Lu Ke was somewhat worried but didn’t stop Xu Yi.
"Half an hour, you skin the wolves here, if I don’t catch the Bear Beast in half an hour, I’ll be back," said Xu Yi as he handed his dagger to Lu Ke since hers had turned into a spear, making it unsuitable for skinning.
"Alright, be careful," Lu Ke took the dagger and said to Xu Yi, then began skinning.
Half an hour to skin four pelts and clean them up, the time seemed tight.
Xu Yi rode Giant Ha, pursued in the direction the Bear Beast left.
Xu Yi felt the Bear Beast was so heavily injured that it shouldn’t run far.
But Xu Yi chased for half an hour without seeing any trace of Giant Ha.
Either the Bear Beast ran fast or it was hiding somewhere.
Unfortunately, Xu Yi’s sense of smell was far inferior to Giant Ha’s, relying on his own sense of smell was no way to find the Bear Beast’s tracks.
As for Giant Ha, it didn’t find anything either; perhaps it didn’t want to encounter the Bear Beast.
Xu Yi and Lu Ke’s training for it was still limited; instructing it to find specific animals was somewhat difficult. Since taming it, not much time had passed, so Xu Yi couldn’t expect it to be that intelligent.
If it really were that smart, it would’ve run away successfully and not become Lu Ke’s mount.
So, Xu Yi turned around and headed back.
Lu Ke was still alone, skinning the wolf pelts, and Xu Yi worried that she might encounter trouble.
When he returned to Lu Ke, she was still working on the fourth wolf skin.
Giant Ha saw this, turned its head to the side, seemingly understanding something. If there were a pile of sand, it would probably bury its head.
"How did it go? Did you catch it?" Lu Ke stopped her actions and asked Xu Yi.
"No, I don’t know where it ran off to," Xu Yi dismounted and then placed the skinned Giant Wolf pelts in the bamboo basket on Giant Ha’s back.
The two Giant Wolves killed by the Bear Beast had many wounds on their bodies, and they would need to be sewn up and fixed with a tripod afterward for use.
Lu Ke swiftly skinned the last Giant Wolf, neither Xu Yi nor Lu Ke planned to keep the Giant Wolf meat.
After all, they had enough dried meat now, and Giant Ha probably didn’t want to eat its companions’ meat.
After collecting the last Giant Wolf pelt, Xu Yi and Lu Ke left.
Lu Ke found Giant Ha easier to control now; a tug of the reins and it followed the direction.
The two headed directly back to camp; since there was still time, returning for lunch was still an option.
Once back at camp, they casually ate some dried meat, and then Xu Yi fixed the wolf pelts in place. The two pelts with cuts were sewn together by Lu Ke and fixed on a tripod.
Xu Yi also checked the peppers on the rooftop; after an entire morning of sun exposure, the originally green peppers were now somewhat shriveled and darkened.
Xu Yi felt that another half day of sun exposure would be enough to dry them.
When dried, half would be ground into powder, and the rest reserved for stewing soup and cooking.
In the afternoon, Xu Yi planned to chop a few small trees to repair the roof of the deer pen, which had been made sturdy enough to withstand heavy snowfall.
Of course, chopping wood was incidental; the main objective remained hunting.
After dealing with four Giant Wolves in the morning, Xu Yi’s confidence had increased significantly.
He believed he could manage a small beast pack of four or five unless they were a more robust species like tigers.
But after searching all afternoon, neither Xu Yi nor Lu Ke encountered any carnivorous animals.
They did come across several rabbits; Xu Yi and Lu Ke caught two, but felt no need to continue, considering it was enough to eat.
On their way back, Xu Yi and Lu Ke cut some logs to bring back.
When they returned to camp, they started to reinforce the deer pen.
Besides the two reindeer and Big White, they had two additional sheep, so reinforcing the pen was necessary to prevent overcrowding.
They worked hard until nightfall, finished restructuring the roof, and then herded the animals back into the pen.
At night, the two ate rabbit stew and began slicing potatoes.
The potato slices needed to be very thin, soaked in water to rinse off the starch.
After soaking for half an hour, the potatoes were scooped out, placed into a clay pot, and fried.
First, fried on high heat for ten minutes, then turned to low heat for twenty minutes before being removed.
Thin, crispy potato chips were cooked and spread onto bamboo sieves.
To better absorb the oil, Xu Yi and Lu Ke even lined the bamboo sieve with paper, quite a luxurious approach.
Looking at the golden potato chips, still steaming with heat, Xu Yi couldn’t help swallowing.
Just by smelling, they seemed delicious.
