Lost Origins: SS Ranked Awakening-Chapter 142: Boredom
Kieran’s blood ran cold at those words. A whole noble family had been wiped out just because they refused to give up their heritage and stand for what was right.
Jake’s story explained what the noble guy meant by "adopted child of a fallen noble family". Those words were pretty accurate, it wasn’t something made up or something twisted that they had come up with.
Jake wasn’t done with his story though, as he continued after closing his eyes for a period of time, collecting his emotions.
It seemed like those memories affected not just Ruby, but him too. He had mentioned that both families were extremely close.
That brought the question to Kieran,
’Where were the Blake’s when the Gale family were being executed.’
From how close Jake described it, he had started to think that both familes were even situated close to each other.
"We failed that night!"
Just voice was lower than before, coming out almost as a whisper. Kieran could sense fear, and shame in his voice, as Jake struggled to push the next words out, regret painting a sorrowful nural on his face.
"Ruby was with my family that night. I used to think that we couldn’t act because it was all so sudden. They struck once it was night and didn’t even give them any chances. By the time our reinforcements got there, it was over, all burnt down to ashes.
"You used to think?"
Kieran asked, picking out the odd statement.
"The Gale knew what was going to befall them the moment their inheritance was exposed to the public eye, the eyes of the upper nobility which resided in the capital and its surroundings specifically."
"Just as they knew, my family knew too. The head at that time, my grandfather, offered to help them. We might not have been active, but we had enough standing to defer that noble house from taking any drastic actions, at least till we thought of a solution."
"They rejected the offer and sent Ruby our way. I don’t want to know whatever respect they had between them or whatever reasons were behind such a decision, but the fact stands that my family knew of the attack before hand and chose to do nothing!"
Jake’s voice trembled with fury, his fists clenched the handle of the training weapon so hard, it shattered.
Kieran observed silently, thinking of how to process all this.
It was evident that this was a matter personal to Jake just as much as it was to Ruby.
Yet despite all the emotions exhibited by both of them, Kieran knew one thing clearly. If there was no plan then their emotions were all for naught.
They would be nothing other than children throwing a tantrum over events they had no control over at the time.
He wasn’t going to watch them send themselves to the grave just because theu were emotional. Jake’s next words made him start to think otherwise though.
"My father and grandfather felt the wrong of their own decisions too. They felt the blood of their sworn brothers on their hands, all because they wanted to respect their final wish. My father says it that the Gales had grown tired of the weight the mission brought upon then."
"They had been waiting for a salvation, he said. But Ruby doesn’t need to know that. No one does. We Blake’s made another oath with ourselves. We might have been unable to protect the Gales because of their request, but there was nothing stopping us from taking the heads of those responsible, especially the noble family at the head of that incident."
"Over the past years, the Blake’s had become active once again. Now that they were without the company of the Gales in peaceful solitude, we delved ourselves completely into the Noble world and we made it huge. My family is now an upper noble family with equal standing as those bastardd combined!"
"I’m guessing the guy from earlier was from one of those families?"
"Edrick! That coward only knows how to use his tongue to lick the boots of his masters. His family also benefitted from the massacre."
"He isn’t our main concern for now. We need to strike them at the head before we go for the others."
Jake said, picking out the broken shards that had embedded themselves into his palm.
"Hmm... I’m guessing you have a plan then?"
"Of course, we do!"
"We can’t go straight for the main target right now. We need to lure him out into the open, Edrick just happened to be godsent for that."
"I’m pretty sure that by now, at least one of them would have picked up on the rumors that there exists within this camp a last descendant of the Gale family."
"Unfortunately, I can’t tell you all the details right now."
Jake said, looking Kieran in the eye. He had just done what they had been trying to avoid all along.
He had revealed their past to him, and he was going to inevitably get dragged into their business.
’No, there’s still a chance left!’
His eyes flashed as he asked Kieran the question that would decide what turn their journey would take.
"We didn’t want you to get involved, hence the distance created. Some other nobles were after you at the beginning of the second stage, like Richard, but we stood up to them. To avoid more of them targeting you because of us, the distance was necessary."
Kieran’s eyes flashed at the mention of Richard targeting him at the beginning of the second stage. It was....like him.
Still, he wouldn’t be surprised if the other nobles were the lackies he had gained after some time in the camp.
"If you get involved now, there is no backing out!"
Jake said, wishing Kieran took the easy way out.
"Don’t stress it, I’m coming along. You’re a brother after all!"
Kieran said dismissively with his arms crossed over his chest and closed eyes.
Jake let out a small chuckle at the his mention of being brothers.
"Yeah, brothers"
’He still remembered that!’
His mind flashed back to a scene in the woods
Kieran hadn’t forgotten what Jake had done for him. It might not have been obvious, but being seen around Jake, the strongest recruit of their batch was created a cover for him. It served as a deterrent for those who initially had intentions to pick on the only commoner in the camp, at least until Kieran started to make waves himself.
Honestly, he wasn’t completely clean with Jake. While he was doing this because it involved the people he saw as friends and according to the head chef’s words, it was necessary to stand up for one’s friends, a major reason why he had agreed without a second thought was because he was bored.
He liked his peace, but he was starting to get bored with the monotone routine of the camp. They weren’t yet qualified to be deployed into the battle field on the planet, and the missions he had been seeing lacked anything that caught his eyes.
His world was peaceful, a little too peaceful. Anymore and he would have gone running back to Agusut for some more training. He already had, and he was rejected and sent back with a couple of broken bones.
While he was feeling bad over the lack of action in his life, the nobles were busy plotting and taking dangerous moves.
He had no interest in getting involved with Sabrina’s business, but at least he could gain something other than standing up for his friends by helping Jake and Ruby. They were in for a surprise, if they still thought he was half awakened.
"I’ll leave you to go take care of this mess!"
His eyes went from the broken weapon pieces in his hands to the state of the room once again. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
’A little overboard’
Kieran suppressed the urge to roll his eyes as he made his way out of the room. He also had some training to do.
August had cracked a few of his bones recently. They had healed and were now feeling stiff. He was going to need some proper stretches if he was going to get some action soon.
.....
"I’m starting to think you’re pretty bad at doing your job!"
A cocky voice went across the table to Liam who, unbothered, focused on the meal in front of him
"And what is it this time, Ethan?"
Liam asked.
"Just because I want to rub it in your face, I’ll spill."
Ethan said, his voice filled with arrogance as always. He was feeling very satisfied with Liam’s current behavior. He didn’t even want to know why.
"There have been rumors that the Number one recruit of this little camp, Asher Black plans to revolt and switch factions. It seems like he plans to take the black family along with him!"
"Oh? And where did you hear that from?"
Liam eyes flashed, and be feigned surprise.
"Your very own family. Do you know what that means Liam? You need to start playing better!"
Ethan pushed.
’Bingo, they bit!’
Liam concealed the smile that spread in his face. Their plan was making progress.
"And how would the family know about things within the camp, if neither if us reported back to them?"
Liam asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Hmm? That isn’t any of my business. You just need to keep failing!"
Ethan said taking his leave from the table
