Chapter 79: Danger Ratings

While Kieran was in the realm of dreams, the camp had been sent into a state of rapid motion. Especially the second years, whose ranking list had just been released. Not only that, they had also activated the challenge system immediately.

Several recruits who weren’t satisfied with their placements or those who didn’t have a rank were preparing to take action and change that.

Not only them, but also the newly accepted second years had also begun to make moves. After utilizing their resources to get information on this beforehand, the moment they were waiting for had finally arrived. It was time to put all their planning to use.

It had only been a few hours since the list had been announced, but the camp had already awakened. All the older second years who had vanished for months could be spotted at several different parts of the camp; ready to dominate and establish their might over the other recruits.

Unfortunately for those who could barely hold in their urge to dye their fists with the blood of their opponents, the camp released another message following the main announcement that would have them suppress their urges for a few more moments.

.......

"Asleep?"

August looked at Kieran, his mask unable to conceal how dumbstruck he was. But he couldn’t place any blame on Kieran. After all, he was the main reason why he had ended up in that state.

’Should have just let him rest after he got back!’

He smacked his forehead, feeling like an idiot. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

About 10 hours after the camp had released the notice, he summoned the three recruits in his unit wanting to discuss with them the terms, advantages and disadvantages of the new report by the camp.

Kieran, having slept off like a baby, had only seen his message and arrived two hours later.

’Doesn’t matter, he is here now and we can finally begin!’

August cleared his throat and glanced at Richard from the edge of his eyes.

He was expecting some kind of friction or aggression which would require him to come into, but it seemed like he had managed to get his message across the last time.

Kieran, when he stepped in, just ignored Richard and sent a short nod to Derrick who responded in kind.

Richard too seemed to be more rational than was stated in his report. He had been sitting in the same spot since he arrived awaiting the arrival of Derrick and Kieran. He didn’t even try to taunt Kieran when he saw him come in.

’Must have been really satisfied with that win’

"You’ve all seen the new development that happened within the last 12 hours."

August started sending his gaze towards Kieran who nodded in return.

He had brought himself up to date while making his way here. So he wasn’t in the dark about the camp’s announcement of the Ranking list and challenge system.

Along the way, he had also noticed faces he had never seen before. Recruits with different auras around them which made him feel a faint hint of pressure.

Leoara had mentioned the occurrence of something like this to him previously, but he didn’t expect it to be on a scale like this. The only time he had seen something like this, was when the camp announced the declaration of war.

"As you might know, the Ranking system you had while in your first year was a dummy made to make you familiar with the one you are going to be interacting with from now!"

August walked to the open entrance of the dojo and took a seat facing the three of them.

"Unlike the one in your first year, this list is made based on the strength of the recruits alone. It doesn’t look at their other abilities, like how good they are in a support role like logistics or anything like that."

August said, his voice went down a notch, giving a deep cold tone that Kieran could swear made something in him shiver.

The instructor raised his head and looked at the three of them, the silver glint in his eyes visible from underneath the cover of his dark hair.

"By strength, I also don’t mean pure physical strength or speed or any of that. By strength, I’m referring to your combat strength. How much of your potential, your current power are you able to pull out during a battle, how high your danger rating is. In a single sentence, how lethal are you?"

The instructor asked, fully capturing the attention of the three recruits in the room. Even Richard had turned to face him, a stone cold expression on his face.

"You must have seen on your stats page in your watch an element that says, ’DR’. That is your Danger rating. There should be a value assigned to each if you derived from all the combat data the camp has managed to gather so far. Besides that is also the danger level, which should be self explanatory enough."

"It categories you into a dagger level depending on the value of your Danger rating. That aside, your default position on the ranking is based on the value of your Danger rating."

August said, casually explaining the principle behind the Ranking list.

His attitude changed to a laid back one as he waved his hand dismissively.

"You don’t need to bother about appearing on the list. No one of you greenhorns from your group should be able to make it to the list. That rarely ever happens. The last one was a Scarlet girl. I think?"

August said, stealing a glance at Richard who thighthed his fist at the mention of a Scarlet girl, the hate that flashed on his eyes at that moment before disappearing was more than that he had shown open toward Kieran, but it was mixed with something else.

’Pain?’

"What you need to watch out for are those at the top and middle of the rankings. They’re dangerous and I advise that you avoid them as long as you can. They mostly tend to be loners who won’t make moves unless they are challenged. Now that takes us to the other development. The Challenge system"

The instructor went back to being serious as he mentioned this system.

"This is a cheat system!"

August said in his deep tone, leaving Kieran confused.

Derrick and Richard, while still showing signs of confusion, had some look of understanding on their faces.

Although Kieran had asked Ruby for help regarding this, the information hebhad gotten from her was nowhere as detailed as what he was getting from August right now.

"As I said earlier, the Ranking list is based on the value of a person’s danger rating and naturally, if a person’s danger rating increases, his rank would also increase, if it surpasses that of the person above him, that is!"

"The normal ways of increasing one’s danger level is by actively participating in high level missions and tasks or to engage in personal combat challenges. The results of training fights also add to this."

"While this method works, there is a faster, more efficient way to rise on the ranking list and increase your danger rating."

August said and all of them in the room had a single, obvious answer in their mind.

’The challenge system!’

"Yes. The challenge system. This system allows those of lower level/rating and even those who aren’t even on the list to challenge those above them and gain a place in the rankings, thereby increasing their danger rating."

"The system follows a simple rule. If you can defeat the person above you, then you are stronger and more dangerous than the said person and your Danger rating gets adjusted accordingly."

August explained what they had already figured out half way during his breakdown.

’Isn’t that too wild?’

Kieran wondered. With a system like that in place, if there were no counter measures. The recruits would have fallen into chaos long ago.

As if reading through his mind, August addressed the issue.

"To prevent what you might be thinking. Rules were set in place. You only have a maximum of 5 chances to challenge a anker every month. This has nothing to do with personal challenges. For the first ten days of each month, no ranker can refuse a challenge."

"After that, only the top 15 rankers can refuse a challenge and even they can only refuse 5 times each month."

August explained the rules put in place to make the challenges system operational.

"Because of this, most fights occur during the first ten days of each month and the ranking pretty much remains the same till the next month, with little changes."

"it’s also become more or less tradition, not to make any major moves outside those 10 days."

Letting out a deep breath, August continued.

"Luckily, while the system has been activated, it’s only going to take effect from tomorrow. I think you should go back and do some research on the previous rankers and find your targets. Remember, don’t aim to high, go for the lower ones and watch out for those who would try to pick on newbies like you"

"You also have the threat of the others from your set who have already started making their moves. I don’t like losing and you shouldn’t either. Dismissed!"

August gave them his last words for the day before dismissing them.

How they handled what they were going to face was up to them alone.
