Chapter 54: New Inheritance

Leo’s eyes would have widened if he had any energy left in them, he did not expect to heat the familiar chime that accompanied the sphere so early in the morning.

He expected it to be his daily objective rewards for the last day, this would have been more likely since he could already see the streaks of daylight coming through the windows of the simulation room within the luxurious mansion-- but it was still a bit early for that.

So he knew of a surety that this was something else.

He willed the sphere to display his information and scrolled through everything till he got to something he found-- new. His eyes peered at it even deeper.

He had gained a new Inheritance ability aside from his previous one. He peered at it causing the runic text to enlarge.

Inheritance Ability: [Wolf Bond]

Inheritance Ability Description: The blood of the wolf flows through you giving you a connection to the pack.

Inheritance Ability: [Moon God’s Battle Art]

Inheritance Ability Description: In a world bathed in darkness and blood, moon god found the true meaning of combat in the reflection of moonlight.

Inheritance Advancement: 0/100

Leo read at the words and felt his head pulse not from pIn but from confusion.

’An inheritance, is this related to the legacy too?’ His eyes fell to the advancement section. ’Curses! More nonsense I don’t know what to do with.’

He honestly did not want to think about it, it only made his head hurt more. He could hear Kevin walking into the room and humming a cheerful melody.

"I know you’re my friend and all but can you go take a shower, you stink like a swer pipe." Leo could feel the seriousness in his voice which irritated him and caused him to roll his eyes.

Due to some deep persuasion he somehow had the most luxurious bath he had experienced in a long time and was soon having a delicious breakfast. Gerald was a surprisingly good cook and butler, he scolded Kevin when he spoke during dinner. In a way it almost felt like watching a mother handling a spoilt child.

Leo wanted to return back home as soon as he could but he had one more thing to do, something he had been putting on hold for a while.

"Monsters?" Kevin asked as he worked on one of his predator suits-- this one looking slightly different than the one he used against Leo the night before. "Why do you want to know about them?"

Before Leo could answer that however Kevin asked another question, "You’re a superhuman, shouldn’t you know more about them?"

Leo wanted to claw his eyes out, because Kevin was right-- he should know more. "Can I use one of your computers real quick?"

"Sure thing," Kevin responded without looking up from his work. There’s actually one on the table there.

One thing Leo had come to learn about Kevin was his weird love more machines. He literally had a laptop in every room in the mansion, Leo was almost sure of that.

He walked up to the laptop on one of the tables and took a seat before it, he was about to interact with it when the screen lit up to reveal the image of a beautiful silver sphere looking right at him.

"Detecting user..." It spoke in a robotic female voice, "identify yourself."

Leo stared at the screen in shock. "What the hell?"

"That’s my ai assistant, Jane." Kevin called out to him. "Jane give him temporary access to the net."

The interface on the screen slowly fizzled out, "New user Leonardo Hall detected, welcome."

"Sorry, she’s still a work in progress." Kevin yelled out.

Leo was left even more stunned by the number of things his old friend would even make just so simply pass time. He turned his mind back to his main priority at the moment and that being his need for information.

If he was going to face a monster he would have to know more about them, luckily there were a bunch of information about them on the network.

After several long minutes he finally took a break and relaxed in his seat, he had learned more or less a few things.

Monsters were formed whenever a human who had been plagued by the song of sorrows chose not to enter Hellscape. At first people believed that they simply ran mad from terror, but it was soon discovered that the became beast-like. Unlike beasts that fed on human flesh and sometimes even themselves-- monsters fed on human fears.

That made Leo worry even more.

Apparently the behaviours of monsters were more or less erratic, since there were very few times when the military would keep any alive to study. This left Leo with no way to know how to understand why Hinata did what she did. He wanted to know more, especially why she did not attack him the day he had made first contact with her. She had eaten human food back then, why?

Did she want to blend in and pick her next victim or was there a bigger agenda? Did monsters have higher intelligence than most humans, or did she have a certain pattern of feeding where she chose to pick off her prey.

Leo could not help but think that the key to defeating her was somewhere here, if only he knew where to look. Or what to look for.

And more importantly-- how strong was a monster?

Did they get stronger the more they consumed fear or was it by how long they had become monsters. Why the song of sorrows turn people to monsters anyway?

Leo spent a lot more time thinking before he said his farewell to Kevin, who took it rather in a heartfelt way. Before getting back in the hover car to be sent back to the city, Kevin handed him three things.

The first was a brand new laptop with a small projection device to use for his further training, the second was a small remote to use to summon him whenever he was in an emergency and the third was a gift wrapped present for Trish.

As he departed with Gerald in the driver’s seat Leo had a lot to think about but this time he did not feel as burdened. Perhaps because he had someone he believed he could rely by his side. He wanted to believe that Kevin could be trusted more than anything, for now he had no reason not to believe that.

Besides it felt safe having someone watching over his family when he left to Hellscape or if he were to perish.

"Don’t mind the master, he was very excited by your arrival he could hardly sleep." Gerald said without taking his eyes off the boundless sky.

Leo opened his mouth to speak but shut it back shortly after, he changed his mind shortly after and then spoke. "You know what’s funny? I think he’s just as lonely as I was."

He could have sword that he saw the corner of the butler’s mouth curl slightly in a smile, in that moment his phone rang.

It was an unknown number, he hesitated for a bit before he picked the call. He did not need to place it in his ear for his advanced hearing to pick up the voice-- it was Mr Neuman’s bodyguard.

"You are to return back to the previous meeting ground to be transported to the boss’s private grounds."

Before Leo could object another voice spoke, "Two of ours have been killed— awakened."

Leo’s breathing wavered for a brief moment.

’Curses! She already killed two awakened?’
