Liu Changqing thought he might be seeing things.

He rubbed his eyes hard and looked at his phone again. The screen still showed An Yuan Yao’s name.

Why is she calling me?

They hadn’t spoken in over a week. Liu Changqing figured the last time they met, he had made his feelings quite clear. Could this woman have gone off the deep end again?

“What do you want?”

He didn’t know how she would take it, but Liu Changqing, already in a foul mood from being woken up, didn’t bother masking his irritation.

“Come…”

“Come pick me up…”

Her speech was slurred and hard to understand, as if she were struggling to form coherent words.

It took Liu Changqing a moment to process.

“Have you been drinking?”

“Mm…”

A faint mumble came through the receiver, almost inaudible. Liu Changqing frowned deeply.

He pulled the phone away from his ear and ended the call.

It was past two in the morning. Come pick her up? Out of the blue? Ridiculous.

There was no way he was going. In fact, Liu Changqing thought it was absurd that he even still had her number saved in his phone.

He didn’t want to be entangled with anyone, much less the wife of his ex-wife’s affair partner.

Placing the phone on his pillow, Liu Changqing lay back down.

Phones in this era were either candy bar-style or flip phones. Liu Changqing’s was the former, just the right size to hold in one hand with excellent battery life. Its only downside was that its ringtone was obnoxiously loud, giving him flashbacks to elderly people playing with their phones in his past life.

Sleep soon crept up on him, and he was just about to drift off when the sudden blare of the ringtone jolted him awake.

His whole body tensed, startled by the noise.

Glaring at the vibrating phone with its thunderous ringtone, Liu Changqing snatched it up angrily and pressed the answer button.

“Do you ever stop? It’s the middle of the night! Don’t you need to sleep?!”

“Uh…”

To his surprise, it was a man’s voice on the other end.

Perhaps intimidated by Liu Changqing’s outburst, the man sounded hesitant.

“Sir, uh… this lady kept insisting she wanted to call you. I tried calling the number saved as her husband’s, but no one answered. If possible, could you come pick her up? We’ve already closed for the night…”

“…”

Liu Changqing felt like it wasn’t his problem.

He was about to refuse outright, but for some reason, an image of An Yuan Yao’s pitiful expression from their last encounter flashed through his mind.

Tightening his grip on the phone, he let out a long sigh.

“Where are you?”

An Yuan Yao’s mind was hazy.

She tried to lift her head, but it felt as though a heavy weight was pressing down on it, leaving her unable to move.

Her gaze remained fixed on the door, a position she had maintained for some time.

Beside her, a young waiter stood awkwardly, unsure of what to do.

The guest had arrived at the restaurant in the middle of the night.

She hadn’t ordered any food, only requested drink after drink.

The young waiter glanced at the table and the floor.

The table was piled high with empty bottles, and more were scattered across the ground.

Could she have drunk herself to death?

The waiter was nervous, terrified that something like that might happen.

An Yuan Yao kept staring at the door.

Suddenly, she seemed to see something and struggled to open her eyes wider.

In her blurry vision, she saw a figure approaching.

Her heart held a glimmer of hope.

Even though the chance was slim, she couldn’t help but hold on to the thought.

“Chongming…”

“I’m not that bastard.”

Liu Changqing’s face was dark with displeasure.

This was exactly the kind of situation he hated the most.

The drunken An Yuan Yao squinted at him, leaning heavily on the table in an attempt to get a closer look.

Her hair was unkempt, loose strands sticking to her sweaty forehead.

She didn’t look the least bit attractive in her current state.

If anything, she resembled a lunatic.

“Can you still walk on your own?”

An Yuan Yao tried to move closer, squinting hard at Liu Changqing.

After staring at him for a while, she suddenly giggled and pointed at him with her slender fingers.

“Hehe… so it’s you…”

“Are you brain-dead?”

The more Liu Changqing thought about it, the angrier he became. He felt that turning off his phone and leaving her here to fend for herself would have been the better choice.

“Hehehe…”

An Yuan Yao continued to laugh.

To Liu Changqing, her laughter seemed pitiful.

With her good looks, refined upbringing, and gentle demeanor, she didn’t deserve this kind of treatment.

“Alright, enough laughing. Where do you live? I’ll take you home.”

“Hehe…”

Before she could answer, An Yuan Yao collapsed forward.

Liu Changqing caught her arm, pulling her back up with effort.

Drunk people are like boneless creatures.

The phrase his father had once said in his previous life echoed in his mind.

An Yuan Yao squirmed in his grasp, like a slippery eel trying to sink to the floor.

With a sigh, Liu Changqing tightened his grip and hoisted her up.

She was surprisingly light.

Looking at her face, which was so different from the one he remembered, Liu Changqing couldn’t help but feel a pang of emotion.

The memories provided by this body stirred something in him.

Back in high school, Liu Changqing had been at the same school as her and Li Wanran. Although they weren’t in the same class, pretty girls always became the subject of discussion.

Especially girls like her.

She always wore a smile.

Her eyes were particularly captivating, curving like crescent moons when she laughed. Her slightly downward-tilted eyebrows gave her face a gentle, delicate appearance, stirring a protective instinct in most boys.

Of course, Liu Changqing wasn’t one of those boys.

Sighing again, he decided to get her out of the restaurant first.

“Uh… sir?”

The waiter, who had been waiting nearby, called out.

Supporting An Yuan Yao, Liu Changqing turned around.

“What is it?”

“You… haven’t paid yet.”

“…”

Glancing at the table, Liu Changqing felt his mouth twitch.

Grabbing An Yuan Yao with one hand, he began slapping her cheeks with the other.

“Wake up! Why did you call me here if you haven’t paid?!”

Sunday, 8:45 AM.

Liu Xiazhi rubbed her eyes as she opened the door to her room.

She had woken up because of nature’s call.

I should’ve listened to Ge and not drunk so much water before bed…

Still half-asleep, she shuffled toward the bathroom, only to stumble over something and nearly fall to the ground. Thankfully, a nearby sofa prevented her from hitting the floor.

Propping herself up on the sofa, she stood and looked around.

Her bedhead combined with her sleepy scowl made her look adorably grumpy.

Hands on her hips, she prepared to scold whoever had tripped her.

But when she saw the person sprawled on the floor, her mouth dropped open in shock, wide enough to fit an egg.

She recognized this person immediately.

“Aunt An?!”
