Madness After the Apocalypse-Chapter 29: The Mysterious Note
Chapter 29 - The Mysterious Note
Qian Ying'er shouted, "Do you all remember the last time we saw Annan on the 14th floor? She looked so healthy, her home must have plenty of food, probably even some meat!"
Meat?
Wei Wenbin suddenly recalled that the day before the heavy rain, while he was waiting by the building entrance for Annan, he had seen her holding a white dog in her arms.
His eyes lit up. "That's right, Annan has a dog!"
A stir spread through the crowd.
A dog?
Dog meat?!
Their eyes gleamed with hunger, their mouths watering, as if they could already taste a steaming bowl of dog meat soup.
Although they had all been wary of Annan before, now, driven by starvation, they were desperate. They couldn't just sit around and wait to starve to death.
At this point, even if the place was controlled by a terrifying organization, they would barge in. What's more, the 14th floor only had a woman living alone.
"They're right, let's go to the 14th floor!" someone shouted.
"To the 14th floor! Let's eat dog meat!" came the reply.
The crowd erupted in excitement.
But the few who had been injured on the top floor remained silent.
They understood—though the group appeared large and intimidating, it was hardly united. In a fight, only they would be doing the work.
The others were cunning, hiding behind them.
Faced with the survivalist approach of the mother and son on the top floor, they were unlikely to meet death. But Annan on the 14th floor was a different story—she could kill without hesitation.
Already wounded, a confrontation with her could very well end in death.
They weren't foolish, and so this time, they wisely stayed in the back.
No one was willing to step forward and take the lead. After shouting slogans for some time, they hadn't even made it out of Sun Peng's door.
Seeing this, Sun Peng stepped forward and said, "We still need to go to the 14th floor. If we can't find food, we'll all starve."
"But everyone's been through a lot, and many are injured. Let's head back, rest, and regain our strength. I'll come up with a systematic plan, so no one is left at a disadvantage. Tomorrow morning, we'll go together and divide the food from the 14th floor."
Hearing this, the crowd agreed and went their separate ways. Some wrapped wounds, some sharpened knives, others practiced punches—all preparing for the next day's attempt to grab as much food as possible from Annan's place.
That night, Annan was curled up on the couch, holding her dog and watching a downloaded comedy movie while nibbling on a duck neck. Suddenly, Fugu stood up, alert, staring at the door.
Following its gaze, Annan walked to the entryway and listened carefully. There was indeed some rustling outside.
Had someone come to sneak around and pick the lock?
The noise didn't seem to come from many people. Annan took out a triangular dagger from her storage, quietly opened her door, and stepped outside.
Through the stairwell door, she couldn't clearly hear what was happening in the hallway. She swiftly opened the door and thrust the knife.
She struck nothing.
There was no one outside, only a piece of paper stuck to the wall.
"Tomorrow morning, everyone will come to raid the food."
She tore the note off the wall and went back inside.
Sitting on the couch, Fugu wagged its tail, sniffing around her. Annan patted its head and opened the note to read it.
The handwriting was messy, with lines swirling in all directions, resembling chicken scratches.
Was there such ugly handwriting in the world?

Looking at the note, she suddenly felt a strange sense of familiarity.
After a moment, she realized—this was the same person who had sent her a letter in her previous life!
Four years had passed, and she had almost forgotten.
Back then, she had received a similar note, in the same distinctive handwriting, though the message had been different.
The note back then had read, "Beware of the two siblings."
At that time, Wei Wenbin and Qian Ying'er had only just moved into her house. She had found the note unexpectedly slipped into her bag and had indeed grown suspicious.
But after careful observation, she hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary.
They hadn't made any harmful moves toward her. In fact, each time they went out for supplies, Wei Wenbin would take a bit less and give the extra to the two girls, always maintaining a gentlemanly demeanor.
Qian Ying'er had been affectionate, treating her like a sister.
So, she had quickly trusted them, dismissing the note as a prank.
Now, it seemed likely someone had overheard the siblings' plans and had kindly tried to warn her.
But who was this person? And why were they warning her again this time?
Paper Note Hero! You're a good one.
With the experience from her past life, Annan decided to take this seriously.
Tomorrow morning, everyone would come to raid the food?
After seeing what had happened to Zhao Ping'an and his mother upstairs, she had already guessed that these people would eventually target her, though she hadn't expected it to be so soon.
It seemed these neighbors were truly starving.
She checked her weapons, unruffled.
This day had always been coming. A man innocent of any crime may still suffer for the treasures he possesses. Living comfortably in the apocalypse would inevitably provoke envy and desire in others.
But this time, she was different from her past life.
This time, she was prepared. Not only had she stockpiled weapons, but she had even acquired a submachine gun.
Since the apocalypse had arrived, she had never slackened, constantly improving her strength. She had practiced the martial arts from her previous life and learned many other combat techniques from video tutorials.
By combining the strengths of various disciplines, along with her previous life's wealth of battle experience, she could easily take down a few desperate outlaws with her bare hands.
As for these emaciated neighbors, she wouldn't even need to use her gun.
Annan locked all four doors, set her alarm to avoid being caught off guard the next morning, and returned to the couch to finish her movie.
Before bed, she applied a facial mask, followed by a full skincare routine, and then drifted into a peaceful sleep.
The next morning, the people in the building had gathered early at 1302.
"Neighbors, I've come up with a plan for everyone to consider," Sun Peng said gravely, clearing his throat.
"I know that after yesterday's events, no one wants to be the first to step forward. But if everyone hesitates, we'll all starve."
"Now, what we need most is unity. We're all neighbors, and that means we're fated to be together. We must trust each other!"
"The 1402 supplies must be quite abundant. I propose we distribute the food based on the effort put in!"
With that, he presented a chart.
"We can allocate supplies according to the priorities on this list. Males will have priority. Those who lead the charge will get double the food, and those who make significant contributions will receive double again. If anyone is injured, there will be additional compensation."
"How does that sound to everyone?"
With a generous reward, brave souls were bound to emerge. Upon hearing this, the crowd agreed enthusiastically.
"Captain Sun's plan makes perfect sense. I'm willing to lead the charge!"
"I'll go too! Damn it, with so many men, what's there to fear from a twenty-something girl!"
"Let's storm 1402! Let's defeat the selfish, ruthless witch!"
