Chapter 81: Magical Barrier Box

In the 5 of us, we are waiting in strategic locations near the boy’s house, who is a target. Everyone in the house is sleeping and have no idea they are in danger. It is our duty as magical girls to protect the innocent civilians.

"Ayane, you are way too nervous," Setsuna says, touching my shoulder. The two of us ended up together in the furthest area, while the others are in a different area, with one watching a spot and two watching another.

"S-Sorry, I just fear for the lives of the children we can’t defend. It’s unfair that we have to choose between the children’s lives," I say sadly. I can only hope this place is the monster’s first target, so no child will be captured.

"I know, but that’s life. Life isn’t very fair, but you were strong in not wavering and trying to negotiate or say something to the other magical girls," Setsuna says with a gentle smile.

"Thank you. I know life may not always be fair, but I shouldn’t cause trouble for the others. They chose what they thought was best, and I accepted their opinion," I say maturely.

"You seem more mature than in the beginning," Setsuna says with an amused smile.

"Really? You think so? It’s thanks to you. I saw how brave and reliable you are, and it inspired me," I say with a sweet smile. It’s completely true that thanks to Setsuna, I gained the courage and determination I needed.

She’s an incredible person, and thanks to her, I feel strong enough to be an ideal magical girl.

"...Setsuna?" I notice Setsuna leaning against the wall. I try to shake her shoulder, but she doesn’t wake up.

"SETSUNA?!" I shake her forcefully, but carefully not to hurt her. She’s not reacting, which means the Dream Tormentor is here and knows about us.

"I need to warn the others!" I quickly run, carrying Setsuna with me to the others. They need to know the enemy has arrived. If even Setsuna was put to sleep, the others can also fall into it.

I quickly reach the location where they are, but what I see is two more of them sleeping. I place Setsuna with them and see that the other girl is near, as if she had tried to run to warn the others but was left unconscious before.

I quickly gather the 4 in one place to be able to defend them from any danger that may arise.

"W-Wait, am I the last one?!" I say, alarmed. They are all sleeping deeply. With this, 4 of us have fallen to the monster’s magic. That means it’s up to me to wake them or try to defeat the monster.

"H-How should I wake them?...wait...if I’m the last one then..." I silently summon my wand, and with speed, I turn around, creating a barrier that receives a blow. I use magic to create a barrier box, locking us 5 inside while I see the Dream Tormentor.

The monster is an eye full of tentacles that it uses as legs, arms, and ropes, sticking its tentacles to the walls. It almost attacked me from behind, and I barely felt its approach.

’Ugh...why do most monsters need tentacles?’ It’s really complicated and gross.

"Not bad, magical girl. You don’t seem as bad as I thought at first," the eye emits a strange sound, but somehow I can understand it as speech.

"Y-You won’t kidnap any more children, monster!" I say, gripping my wand firmly, ready to fight. I may be a support, but with all the training I’ve done, I’ve developed forms of attack.

"And who’s going to stop me? You?" It says with mockery, while I look at the four unconscious ones. Fighting and protecting them will be difficult if the monster decides to focus on them.

’How do I wake them up?’ It’s magic, not a simple sleep. Obviously, slapping them won’t wake them up.

"Yes! I’ll stop you myself," I say, opening a gap in the barrier and going out, moving the wand to make the barrier box move to get out of the alley, sending them a little further so I can fight more freely while everyone is protected by my more resistant barrier.

"Hahahaha, okay then, a lone magical girl is not a threat," it says as dozens of tentacles emerge and attack me. I create a large wall with the barrier, stopping the attack.

’The attack is more or less weak, but very wide.’ As the girls said, it’s quite weak, and only gained the colossal class because its magic is powerful and it has kidnapped many children.

’I have that trump card in my sleeve...but I need to make sure I can hit it.’ I move the barrier, pushing the monster, which jumps on me and tries to hit me. I jump to dodge and form a barrier as a platform, copying Setsuna’s movement.

I generate several barrier platforms and move through the air. Now that I’ve trained, I can easily maintain the floating barriers, forming a thin, heavy barrier wall that I drop above the monster, which barely dodges. This cuts off some of its tentacles.

"H-HYAA!" Suddenly, I see a terrible scene that breaks my concentration, which it uses to hit me with a powerful blow, knocking me to the ground with force.

’...’ It’s an illusion. I saw the four dead, but I know it’s an illusion because this monster can’t get through the barrier box, and the others said it can do that, but it seemed so real that it shook me.

And that’s why I don’t use my trump card, because I don’t know if the enemy in front of me is an illusion or reality. I know its illusions are not tangible, so if I can confirm if it’s really him, I can use my trump card.

Just being hit doesn’t prove it’s him. It could be that the real one is invisible, and what I see is false, or it could be real and is deceiving me. That’s why it’s difficult.

"You’re disgusting! Playing with people’s feelings! Why do you do this?" I say, quickly getting up and creating a barrier to defend myself from any attack.

"I owe you no explanations," it says while its attack with several tentacles passes under the barrier, breaking the concrete and grabbing my legs. It pulls me quickly, making me hit the barrier, which deactivates.

It holds me in front of it while some tentacles wrap around me, but I notice that one of the touches doesn’t fit. I feel the sensation, but I don’t see anything, and with that, I find it.

It’s several meters away on the street, as I imagined, it’s not fighting me directly, which explained its slowness in attacking me at opportune moments.

"THERE YOU ARE, YOU COWARDLY MONSTER!" I say, creating a barrier and throwing it against the street. I’m soon released, while the real monster barely dodges, hitting a car that starts beeping, turning on the headlights, which briefly shows a glimpse of the monster’s location.

"Magic Barrier Box!" I use my trump card, saying the name with pride. Soon, a large barrier box-shaped barrier appears, locking the monster inside, along with the car.

"Sorry about the car," I murmur as everything inside is instantly shredded into thousands of pieces. I feel my magic being consumed by the attack while the monster and the car are torn to shreds.

This magic simulates a magic box used in magic shows. Inside the barrier, numerous thin, sharp barrier "blades" go back and forth without stopping.

Like in a magic show, the difference is that here they cut for real, causing a visually cruel but at the same time benevolent death, as it kills the monster faster than it can feel pain.

I finally see the monster’s body, or rather the tiny pieces cut into cubes. The "blades" cut both vertically and horizontally, leaving the space tiny.

I was able to create this magic thanks to Setsuna, who said that sometimes we need to be cruel to win, but we shouldn’t be like the monsters, because becoming a monster to kill monsters is not right.

That’s why this magic, although violent, kills immediately without causing pain. The magic is still incomplete and consumes more than half of my magic, but it’s like an ultimate video game superpower.

It was difficult to create this technique that requires a thin, strong, and resistant barrier to be able to cut things without needing much impact force.

Plus, this technique uses more than 200 barriers, with the 6 large barriers that make up the box and the rest of the thin barriers that cut everything inside as they close.

"I-I won alone..." I feel a great sense of pride. I protected the four allies who were incapacitated and defeated the dangerous monster, saving children from being kidnapped in the future.

Something I never imagined being capable of in the past, but now alone I have shown myself to be strong enough to protect what is important to me.

"I-I need to check on them!" I force myself to run to the 4. I need to see if they’ve woken up, and we also need to report to the base that we’ve won, even though they didn’t fight. Their presence was fundamental to the victory I achieved with intelligence and magic, and now children will be safe, and Shiranui can help her mother with the money.

The monster underestimated me, but I’m no longer that weak and cowardly girl. Now I have the strength and determination to protect the innocent from evil!
