Magus Supremacy-Chapter 890: A Goodbye
Chapter 890
"What the fuck are you doing here, murderer?!"
Turning around, the couple watched as Finral came stomping forward, his teeth gnashing continuously as he marched past his parents to stand before the kneeling Grey.
The air around the boy crackled with a volatile, unchecked resentment.
"Finral..." Clarice called out softly, her voice trembling with a plea for restraint.
Refusing to listen, the boy lashed out, bashing his leg into Grey’s face with all his might.
The force of the kick sent the mage sliding backward on his knees for several inches before he finally came to a jagged halt.
Grey didn’t even raise a hand to defend himself.
"How dare you show your face here when you are the sole cause of my sisters’ deaths?!" Finral bellowed, his face contorted in a mask of pure agony.
"How dare you actually come back to this place! Who asked you to return? Nobody here wants to see you... not now, not ever!"
"I do," Yami blurted out, his deep voice cutting through the tension.
Finral spun around to glare at his father, his eyes bloodshot.
"Shut up, old man!"
Yami scowled at the disrespectful tone directed toward him, his own temper beginning to flare.
"I have explained to you time and time again that it wasn’t Grey’s fault that Vanessa and Millie died. He was weak, helpless, and beaten down—utterly unable to move a muscle while those monsters killed them. You should actually be grateful that he managed to save Clarice in time, you ungrateful bastard."
Finral clenched his fists, directed a furious, burning glare at the still-kneeling Grey.
"If it wasn’t for him making an enemy of the Otherworlders, they never would have attacked our home! They died because of his choices, so it’s all his fault. He loves to play God all the time, and my sisters had to pay the ultimate price for his heroics."
Turning back to stare at his parents, the boy’s voice rose to a hysterical pitch.
"I warned you both! I shouted and pleaded that we should cast him out of our house. I warned you that he would bring nothing but a mountain of problems for us, and none of you listened to me! Millie and Vanessa physically attacked me just for defending him!" He shouted, his finger trembling as he pointed at the silent mage.
"... They kept defending him over and over. You both too... you all made me seem like some paranoid, jealous prick who doesn’t have a heart.
You wanted to adopt him as your own child and give him all the love in the world. Why?! What for exactly?!
You healed his wounds, gave him food, and provided clothing. Wasn’t that enough? Just because he had lost his memories, you decided to play guardians. Where did that get us? You lost your daughters and your original home."
"... He helped rebuild this house again," Yami countered firmly, stepping forward.
"After destroying it initially! Okay, fine, he rebuilt the structure? Well, I want to see him rebuild Millie and Vanessa back!"
"FINRAL!" Clarice screamed.
She swung her palm forward, bashing it into Finral’s cheek with all her strength.
The sound of the slap echoed across the yard.
An angry red imprint of her fingers appeared on the teen’s face while he slid half a step backward from the physical and emotional shock of the blow.
Tears welled up in Clarice’s eyes as she stared at her stupefied son.
"Just stop, okay? Just stop. Please," she pleaded, her heart breaking for the family she had left.
Yami stepped forward and pulled her into his arms, maintaining a stoic, hard look on his face as he stared at Finral.
"What’s the use of holding onto the past with such bitterness? What’s the use of reopening these old wounds again? Hating on the poor boy continuously won’t bring Millie or Vanessa back. Just stop it, please, and stop making this so hard for all of us."
Finral rubbed his throbbing cheek for a second, his expression hardening into a cold, distant shell.
He turned around to stare at Grey, who had remained on his knees throughout the entire ordeal.
"I don’t want to see you ever again. Leave!"
Grey exhaled sharply, a long, weary sound, as he finally pushed himself to his feet.
His new stage eight power hummed beneath his skin, but here, it felt heavy and useless.
"I will leave," he whispered.
Looking up, he stared at Clarice and Yami, his heart heavy with the finality of his visit.
"Mother Clarice, Yami sir; I came to inform you both that I will be leaving and heading back to my original world. I don’t know when I will come back, but I know I surely will one day."
.....
The couple stared at one another for a long, silent moment before looking back at him with matching expressions of sorrow.
"Why?" Clarice croaked out, her lips quivering as she realized she was losing another son.
Grey smiled... a painful, bittersweet one that didn’t quite reach his eyes.
"I miss home."
Yami exhaled, a sound of profound understanding.
Leaving Clarice’s side, he walked forward until he was standing face to face with the mage, looking into the eyes of the man the boy had become.
"I won’t stop you. I know you probably have a lot to take care of back home. I just want you to stay safe and avoid getting into anything dangerous, kiddo."
Grey forced a brittle smile as he looked at the man, a weary glint in his eyes.
"Avoid getting into anything dangerous, huh? Ha—I will see about that."
Tak. Tak. Tak.
Clarice walked forward, her footsteps light on the dirt, before roping the mage into a tight, firm hug.
Her tears flooded down, soaking into his shoulder once more.
"I will miss you immensely, Grey. Please, come back to us soon."
Grey smiled genuinely this time as he reciprocated the embrace, anchoring himself to her warmth.
"Of course, I will return. This world has become my second home, and I could never truly abandon it."
Thinking for a silent moment, he added, his voice dropping to a vulnerable register:
"Thanks once again for everything you both did for me. From taking in an injured stranger who couldn’t even recall his own origins, to feeding, clothing, and housing him—you loved me as your own flesh and blood. You never once discriminated between your biological children and me."
He paused, glancing at the house they had built together.
"You didn’t even bother to wonder whether I was a terrorist, a dangerous fugitive, or a killer; you didn’t care about any of those labels before you chose to love me unconditionally.
You both trained me and instilled a whole new strength within me—a power I never knew existed—just so I would be able to protect myself in this cruel world."
Finral scoffed from the sidelines, his voice dripping with venom.
"Yet, how did you repay all of that?"
Grey ignored the barb entirely and just continued:
"... I’m truly grateful for every bit of it, to be honest. Thank you so much for not allowing me to feel the hollow void that the death of my mother left in my soul. I appreciate it more than words can say. I love you both."
Yami smiled, his rugged features softening as he joined the hug, ruffling the mage’s hair just as he had when Grey was a mere novice.
"You’re more than welcome, son," the duo stated in unison.
After staying in that position for a few more minutes, they finally disengaged.
Clarice continued sniffling, her eyes red-rimmed as she watched him.
A sharp ache throbbed in her chest the moment Grey turned his back toward them.
With a practiced flick of his wrist, an ashen portal yawned open in the air, humming with a low, rhythmic vibration.
’This will lead me back home. Though it will undoubtedly consume a massive amount of mana, it doesn’t matter anymore. I just need to get back.’
Exhaling a long, shaky breath, he spoke over his shoulders one last time:
"Finral, I will make sure those who took your sisters away from you pay for what they did. I promise you that."
"You can die in the process for all I care; I don’t give a fuck," Finral spat back, though he didn’t move to strike again.
Smiling bitterly at the boy’s stubbornness, the mage turned around to steal one last look at Yami and Clarice.
They stood locked in each other’s arms, beaming at him through their sorrow.
"Bye for now," Grey uttered.
Clarice shook her head firmly, her voice cracking.
"No, Grey. You should always say: ’I will be back.’"
Grey smiled while nodding, his hand quickly wiping away the fresh tears that gathered in his eyes.
He gave a final nod to Yami, who was now waving at him with a solemn, proud expression.
Turning back toward the swirling rift, Grey exhaled before taking a resolute step inside.
Clarice and Yami continued waving as the woman sobbed openly.
A few steps later, Grey’s whole silhouette was consumed by the ashen light.
The portal flickered violently for a few seconds before snapping shut with a loud, electric buzz—leaving only the empty air behind.
Still waving at the void, Clarice turned toward Yami, her strength finally failing.
"Wh-Why do I feel this way?" she asked, the tears dribbling down her chin.
Yami forced a weary smile as he stared at the woman he loved.
"Ah..."
"I will miss him so much," Clarice croaked, while Finral just rolled his eyes in the background before walking away toward the house.
Yami stared at the empty space for several long seconds.
He slowly lifted a calloused finger and wiped a single, stray tear from the corner of his eye.
"Me too, Clarice. Me too."
With a sharp, final exhale, Yami turned around, gently leading Clarice back into the house.
The evening wind swayed softly in the spot where the portal had vanished, the only witness to the departure of the Supreme Magus.
