Chapter 92: 92 - I failed her

92

~Elara’s POV

I was still there, trapped in that strange shield where time did not move the way it should. Everything hurt, and yet nothing touched me. My heart ached in a way that felt endless, like it had been stretched too far and forgotten there. I watched Darlon standing among ashes and rain, and all I could think was that he had always been like this. Loving, loyal, fierce when it came to the people he cared about. In the past, he loved me without fear. In the present, he loved me without limits.

I whispered his name, again and again, even though I knew he could not hear me. "Darlon," I said softly, tears running down my face.

The pain inside my chest grew heavier. I wondered what he was feeling now, standing there alone, while my soul was stuck watching the past like a cruel play that never ended. I wondered if he slept at all, if he ate, if he breathed without feeling like his lungs were full of knives. The thought broke me.

I lifted my face toward the sky, toward the moon that had always watched over us. "Moon Goddess," I cried, my voice shaking. "Please let me return to him. Please. Just let me go back to Darlon."

There was no answer. The sky stayed silent. The moon stayed cold and distant.

I fell to my knees inside that shield, sobbing hard, my whole body shaking as if I could fall apart completely. "Why are you doing this to us?" I screamed. "Why show me everything if I cannot change anything?"

Still, there was nothing. No voice. No comfort. Only silence.

And then, the scene before me shifted again, pulling me back into the moment I hated most.

The council members were still standing there, frozen after Darlon’s words. Their faces showed shock, fear, and confusion. One of them finally found his voice, though it trembled.

"Alpha Darlon," he said carefully, "what do you mean by everyone will pay? You cannot speak like this. You must think clearly and denounce the betrayal."

Another council member stepped forward, raising his hands slowly. "You are grieving," he said. "We understand your pain, but this is not the way. She was a traitor. We have proof. You must calm yourself."

I felt my rage rise, sharp and burning. Traitor. That word again. I wanted to tear it from their mouths.

Darlon laughed then, but there was no humor in it. It was broken and wild, like a sound dragged out of a wounded animal. "You say you understand my pain," he said slowly. "You say you have proof. Yet none of you came to me. None of you asked me. None of you gave her even a moment of doubt."

One of them frowned. "Alpha, this is enough," he said firmly.

Darlon’s eyes changed. I saw it clearly. Something dark and dangerous rose in them. His hands clenched, his whole body trembling with barely held rage.

"There is no line left," Darlon said. "You all crossed it when you decided my Luna was guilty without question."

Before any of them could react, his body began to shift. Bones cracked. Muscles were torn and rebuilt. His scream turned into a deep, terrifying growl that shook the ground beneath us. In seconds, where Darlon had stood, there was his wolf. Huge. Dark. Covered in rage and fury.

The council members stumbled back, shouting in fear.

"Shift back!" one of them yelled. "Guards! Guards!"

But it was too late.

Darlon’s wolf lunged forward with a roar that filled the courtyard. He moved fast, faster than any of them expected. His teeth sank into the first council member’s throat, blood spraying as the man screamed once and then fell silent. Another tried to run, but Darlon pounced, claws tearing through flesh without mercy.

I screamed, even though no one could hear me. "Stop! Darlon, please stop!" My heart felt like it was tearing apart all over again.

The council tried to fight back, some shifting into their wolves, some reaching for weapons, but grief had turned Darlon into something unstoppable. He growled low and deep, ripping through them one by one. There was no hesitation. No mercy. Only rage and pain given shape.

When the last council member fell, the courtyard was quiet except for the rain and Darlon’s heavy breathing. Blood covered the ground, mixing with water, turning everything dark and red.

Slowly, his wolf form faded, bones cracking again as he returned to his human body. He dropped to his knees, naked and shaking, covered in blood that was not his own. His hands trembled as he stared at them, then he let out a broken sob.

"She was innocent," he cried loudly. "She was innocent!"

I felt it like a knife in my chest. I reached for him, desperate, my hands passing through nothing. "I am here," I whispered. "I am here, Darlon. Please do not break like this."

He threw his head back and screamed, a sound full of loss and madness. The maids and guards who had been watching from a distance froze in fear.

Darlon stood slowly, his eyes red and empty. He picked up his sword from the ground, gripping it tightly. "All of you watched," he shouted at them. "All of you believed them. Not one of you asked questions. Not one of you defended her."

A guard stepped forward, shaking. "Alpha, we only followed what we heard, and we are so sorry about that," he said weakly.

Darlon laughed again, sharp and cruel. "That is always the excuse," he said. "You followed empty words while my Luna was destroyed."

He moved like a storm, sword flashing as he attacked. Guards fell, trying to defend themselves, fear written all over their faces. Maids screamed, running in every direction, but Darlon chased them down, yelling as he struck.

"Why did you not doubt?" he screamed. "Why did you frame her as a traitor? Why did you let them steal her name?"

I cried harder, my vision blurring. "Please stop," I begged. "This is not you. This pain is too much. You are hurting yourself."

Blood splattered across the stone walls. Bodies fell. The air was thick with screams and metal and rain.

Then suddenly, voices broke through the chaos.

"Alpha Darlon! Stop!" my mother shouted.

I turned sharply. My parents were standing at the edge of the courtyard, frozen in horror. My mother covered her mouth with her hands, tears streaming down her face. My father stepped forward, his eyes wide, his face pale.

"Alpha Darlon," my father said firmly, though his voice shook. "This must end. This will not bring Elara back."

Darlon froze. His sword hung loosely in his hand. He turned slowly to face them, blood dripping from his blade. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

"I failed her," he whispered. "All of you failed her."

My mother cried openly now. "We know," she said. "But killing everyone will not heal this wound. Please. Stop."

Darlon dropped the sword. It hit the ground with a dull sound. He fell to his knees again, shoulders shaking as he broke down completely.

"They framed her! Lira and Ronan did!"
