Chapter 107: 107 — Final Goodbye

Under the gloomy sky, rain poured down without any sign of stopping. A crowd of nobles stood around the black coffin, their servants holding umbrellas for them as they each placed a white lily on it, dressed in dark clothes. Soon, there was no space left on the dark box, covered with white flowers.

The royal family members wept, unable to control themselves, their warm tears mixing with the rain’s cold water.

Lucian stood beside Cynthia, just like in the past.

Nothing has changed... Everything is the same... Apart from the fact that this time, I know who the woman inside the coffin is.

A sour taste filled Cynthia’s mouth. She had wished for Arisia’s death at times. But she never meant for it to happen so soon. What could have caused it? No matter what, she couldn’t come up with a reason. Lucian made sure she was safe in the mansion. He even moved his knights from the main building where some of them guarded and brought some people without mana to guard her. Yet, she had died an earlier death?

Something terribly wrong is going on. I didn’t try to change this part. So why?..

A sudden, loud slap made her flinch before she could think any further.

In front of her stood the king, his black coat barely wrapping his broad figure. The dark bags under his eyes were visible despite his damped dark hair hiding some part of his emerald eyes. His eyes had turned red, clearly from crying nonstop.

"It’s all because of you!" He shouted furiously, the words escaping through his teeth.

Cynthia frowned in confusion, her gaze slowly shifting towards the person the king was talking to. Her eyes widened at the sight— the king grabbed Lucian by the collar, pulling him into the downpour.

She clenched her fist, trying to not speak. She couldn’t interfere in this conversation. Rather, if she did, it could ruin the plans she had carefully arranged.

Lucian stood there in silence, while everyone in the crowd whispered among themselves. Another harsh blow was inflicted upon his pale skin, the red marks of King Valerian’s hand clearly visible.

"Why did you leave her alone?! I warned you... Don’t ever get close to my daughter again!"

A servant rushed behind the king, holding the umbrella for him so he wouldn’t fall sick due to getting drenched in the cold weather.

Lucian clenched his fists, biting his tongue to make sure he wouldn’t speak a word.

It was indeed his fault.

I shouldn’t have left her alone. I shouldn’t have let her stay in the mansion to begin with. I should have sent her away as soon as she came to Erion. I should...

The thoughts began to creep in, a tear slipping down from his left eye. It had been years since he last cried— and it seemed this time, no one would even know he wept because of the rain.

"Leave. You don’t have the right to attend her funeral."

A soft gasp escaped Lucian, a frown forming on his face.

"You can’t do that, Your Majesty," Cynthia finally spoke, unable to keep quiet any longer.

To her, the king was obviously blinded by his sorrow of losing his only daughter, not wanting to see the pain he was causing his son. After all, there must be a very strong reason for him to slap Lucian among a crowd.

Didn’t he love Lucian? How can he do this even if he is in pain?

"Can’t do what?" Valerian raised an eyebrow, his gaze piercing.

"You can’t ask him to leave. He hasn’t had the chance to say his final goodbye to Ari— I mean, Her Highness."

"Have you?"

"Pardon?"

"I’m asking, have you said your final goodbye to my daughter?" freёwebnoѵel.com

Cynthia hesitantly nodded. The process was followed in ranks. However, Lucian did not step close to the coffin, as if it was a restricted area.

"Then, you might leave," Valerian extended his hand toward the exit of the cemetery.

"Your Majesty..."

Valerian glared at Cynthia who tried to speak but stopped. Not because she feared him, but because she did not wish to create a scene at Princess Arisia’s funeral.

"We will take our leave," she bowed slightly, wrapping her arms around Lucian who didn’t speak a word.

Finally, he also bowed to the king before turning his heels and walking away from the cemetery.

Once they reached the carriage after a long silence, Cynthia opened the door for Lucian who seemed too lost in his own thoughts to do any basic action.

As the door opened, Lucian snapped out of his thoughts, realizing Cynthia was the one who did it for him instead of the horseman, conflicting with him.

Why would she open the door for me instead of letting the horseman do so?

He wondered, without voicing his thoughts. He entered the carriage, followed by Cynthia who sat beside him.

Although he found it strange, he didn’t say anything. He simply stared outside the window, contemplating the rain pouring down the glass window which flowed the leaves of autumn along with it.

"Are you... alright?" Cynthia managed to ask, hesitating between her sentences. "I mean... His Majesty..."

Lucian shifted his gaze to her without answering her. He had no expression on his face— it was completely neutral. Only the tint of red on his skin was visible.

"Does it hurt?" She asked, slowly reaching for his cheek.

Unexpectedly, he did not push away her hand as she thought, hence, she gently caressed both of his cheeks.

"It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have left her alone," he whispered.

"It... is my fault," Cynthia spoke in a low tone. "I was the one who insisted you go to King Alistair’s wedding with me..."

Lucian looked at her in disbelief, an expression he would make only when he found her words unbelievable as if she had once again said a ridiculous thing.

"W-What is it?"

"Why are you blaming yourself? It isn’t like you... Your Highness."

Cynthia lowered her gaze, unable to make eye contact with him. He didn’t know the numerous times she wished for Arisia’s death just so she could see him suffer. Yet, ironically, she was the one trying to comfort him.

Well... at least, he will believe me once I execute my plans if I do this. Right?..
