Married To The Mad Vampire Lord-Chapter 212: The News
Chapter 212: The News
The last thing he wanted was losing her now that he had her.
He almost grabbed the doctor by the neck when he seemed to be taking his sweet time to test and conclude what was wrong with Belle, but he stopped himself when he saw how his wife’s expression had calmed down and was no longer etched with agony.
He hovered behind the doctor until he was done looking into her eyes, checking her pulse, and pressing his fingers over her abdomen through the sheet covering the area where she said hurt occasionally. When he pressed it, she moaned and shut her eyes in repressed pain.
"Don’t fucking hurt her again, human," Rohan gritted in fury, noticing that what the man was doing was bringing her pain when it had seemed to subside just now.
"My Lord, the doctor can’t hear you. He is only compelled to treat her. Calm down, he is trying to look for the cause of the pain." Rav spoke from behind, noticing how his lordship looked like he would strangle the human doctor and toss him out of the building for doing his job.
Belle could no longer pretend that the pain wasn’t killing her inside, and thus she bit her lower lip as the doctor straightened up. Then, with those deep, focused eyes that came from being under a spell of a vampire, he spoke, "From what I see, the woman is showing early signs of miscarriage, which is the cause of her abdominal pains. She has not been resting properly to—"
"What did you just say?" Belle asked, taken aback by his words as she stared up at the doctor. "Miscarriage of what?" She looked at Rohan, who had frozen in place, then back at the doctor, who continued to speak like she had not cut him off or he didn’t hear her question.
"I will recommend a few medications for you, as your baby’s pulse is as weak as yours. A mother needs to be healthy for the baby to be. It’s a miracle the baby is still alive with how weak your pulse is. You—"
Before the man could complete his words, Rohan had snapped out of his momentary shock and grabbed his coat collar, turning him to face him and meet his eyes.
"What do you mean by the baby?" he demanded through gritted teeth, shaking the human in his grips.
"I mean that the baby your wife is carrying is at risk of dying if she doesn’t take proper care of herself," the doctor told him without blinking or flinching from the fury in Rohan’s eyes, as he could not even feel fear under the spell of Rav.
"Are you saying my wife is pregnant?" Rohan questioned with a stunned voice, his eyes narrowing at the doctor. And when the doctor nodded his head, Rohan released his collar and fell back a step from the man, as if he had been blown in the gut by the confirmation of the news.
Belle, who was lying on the bed and looking up at the men, blinked in disbelief as well. She... was pregnant? Since when? How could she be pregnant and not know about...
Her thought trailed off as she belatedly realized she had missed her monthly time, but due to everything that had been happening, she had not paid any attention to why she hadn’t seen her monthly time. It had never occurred to her even once that she might be pregnant or that the pain she occasionally felt was because she was at risk of losing the baby.
She had neglected herself so much that she would have lost a little being inside her. But the worst of the shock was that she had not even thought it remotely possible that she could carry a vampire’s child, being a human.
Unable to believe the news, she brought her hand and slowly pressed it against her abdomen, where she realized it was slightly swollen. She had noticed how her waist was changing shape and even her belly, but she had thought it to be because she was bloated. Now she realized it wasn’t bloating but the signs of the life growing inside her.
Her child... their child. Belle’s throat tightened with emotion, and she let the tears clinging to her lashes fall finally as she raised her eyes to her husband, who now stood like he was immobilized, his eyes glued to her stomach where her hand was pressed. He didn’t blink, nor did it look like he was breathing. In fact, she noticed he was beginning to look pale where he stood.
She suddenly felt panic wash over her at his expression and how he had reacted to the news. Mostly, from what she had seen of couples, the husband gets crazily happy at the news of having a child. But then, seeing her own husband’s expression, she belatedly realized why he wouldn’t be happy at the news and looked like a ghost.
She was human, and she was carrying a child that wasn’t only a vampire—but part demon. With that thought, she felt her heart twist in terror that Rohan might not welcome this pregnancy, even though he had not done anything to avoid it in the first place.
"Rohan..." she called his name softly, not quite liking that expression on his face, that looked like he would pass out at the thought of her being pregnant. "What’s wrong? Say something..." she remarked, fighting back the quiver in her voice and another tear threatening to spill out of her eyes.
He didn’t seem to have heard her, and if he had, he made no indication that he did and still stood there, staring at her stomach. It was when she moved to sit up and reach for him—but the pain in her abdomen made her grimace—that he snapped out of it and hurried to her bedside and pushed her back onto the bed.
"Don’t move. Lay down." He pulled the covers over her shoulder to cover her whole, as she wore nothing beneath the covers. But as he did that, Belle noticed his hands were trembling slightly, like he was holding back his emotions.
She quickly pulled her hand out and grabbed his shaking hand in hers. He looked at her face, and she noticed his throat worked and he shut his eyes.
"You’re pregnant..." he finally said, his voice sounding strained.
"Yes, I am. What do you think about it, Rohan?" Belle asked, pulling his hand down on her slightly swollen abdomen, wanting him to touch and feel the little tiny bump she had until now mistaken for bloating. She watched his eyes open and he looked down at where his hand was on her, and she waited for his reaction or even what he thought about it, but he didn’t say anything and remained like that.
"Rohan..." she called softly, "Are you by any chance thinking I can’t carry this child?" she asked, holding her breath when his eyes turned to her.
He swallowed and then shook his head. "No. If he was a vampire alone, I would say you can’t carry it or survive. He’s part demon. Demons begin to grow and hear things in the womb immediately after they are conceived, and they have a strong affection for their mothers. They can hear you when you’re in pain, and all you have to do is talk to it and tell it not to move or kick because it will hurt you—it will listen and stay quiet. It won’t demand things once it senses affection... it’s just that..." He trailed off, unable to voice what he truly felt about this news.
He had expected that she would have his child someday, but Rohan had not thought that their making love the first time had taken root in her and that she had his child inside her.
He was hoping that by the time she would have their first child, everything would be fine and that they would have a permanent safe place to call home. Bimmerville was not a permanent place, at least not for him, and he couldn’t think of leaving for Nightbrook, leaving her here pregnant with a vampire-demon child that he would have to speak to in a language it would understand, not to hurt its mother like Rohan had hurt his when she was carrying him because they did not understand his needs.
He had hoped that by the time she would be pregnant, he would already be the king.
