Chapter 137: Chapter 137: "No, No... Ethan Sterling!" (Part 1)

The man was very tall, around his early thirties, dressed in a dark gray suit.

Behind him, there was an assistant and two bodyguards.

The two bodyguards stayed at the door, while the assistant brought over the fruit basket and flowers, placing them at the head of Adrian Chamberlain’s bed.

Standing at the foot of Adrian’s bed, the young man raised his right hand and gently pushed up the glasses on his nose.

"I heard Mr. Chamberlain was ill, and I always wanted to visit, but I’ve been really busy. I hope Mr. Chamberlain doesn’t mind."

Adrian Chamberlain glanced up and down at the other man, sensing a familiarity about him, but he couldn’t quite place where they’d met before.

"Who are you?"

"Allow me to introduce," the lawyer said respectfully, "This is Mr. Henry Sterling."

Upon hearing the word "Sterling," Adrian Chamberlain instantly realized who the other party was.

Henry Sterling, Ethan Sterling’s half-brother — the first son of the Sterling Family.

The Sterling Family of Varden, three children.

The first son, Henry Sterling, and the third son, Ethan Sterling, both boys, and a daughter named Ariel Sterling.

Ethan Sterling had spent many years abroad, mainly running his own investment bank company.

Now, most of the Sterling family’s businesses, superficially managed by Ethan’s father, were actually handled by Henry.

Thus, rumors circulated among the public.

The Sterling family’s legitimate first son was very likely to inherit the family’s legacy.

To Adrian Chamberlain, this was a big shot he wouldn’t have dared to imagine encountering in the past.

Now, suddenly standing before him, Adrian found himself unable to react.

Stunned for a few seconds, Adrian finally regained his composure.

"Mr. Sterling, what do you want me to do?"

Henry Sterling curved his lips into a smile, "I can see Mr. Chamberlain is a smart man."

After the initial shock, Adrian Chamberlain was now also calm.

A small figure like him, of what use could he be to Henry Sterling?

The only thing he could think of was Ethan Sterling.

Previously, Ethan had always been abroad, except for his notorious reputation in his youth, he hadn’t had much presence in Jadeston.

After all, no matter how formidable he was, he was abroad.

Out of sight, out of mind, as they say.

This time, Ethan suddenly returned to the country, not only quickly taking over Zenith Group but also investing in numerous enterprises.

He often appeared at various high-class banquets and investment forums, frequently making the headlines of economic newspapers.

It clearly showed that his ambition was to shift his development focus from abroad back to Jadeston.

Mr. Sterling was getting old, and there had been reports suggesting the elder’s health seemed to be deteriorating.

At this critical point, Ethan’s sudden return, what was his purpose?

Surely it was for the Sterling family’s wealth.

With such a capable half-brother, Henry Sterling must be under considerable pressure.

"If Mr. Sterling wants to collaborate with me to bring down Ethan, then..." Adrian Chamberlain smiled, "I would be honored."

"Collaborate?" Henry raised his eyebrows, "Mr. Chamberlain, do you think you have the capital to collaborate with me?"

"I..." Adrian subconsciously swallowed, "I really... don’t have that capital."

"Ha..." Henry walked over, patting his shoulder, "Don’t be nervous, I was just joking with you, Mr. Chamberlain. We are friends now, so I hope you don’t mind. Even though Ethan and I are not full brothers, we are still brothers. I’ve never thought of bringing him down, so please don’t misunderstand."

Adrian Chamberlain chuckled inwardly.

Damn it!

These rich people sure know how to put on a show.

If it wasn’t to target Ethan, would someone like Henry Sterling visit a small fry like him?

Of course, he cursed in his heart, but Adrian dared not show any sign of it on his face.

"What is it?" Henry smiled, "Mr. Chamberlain... don’t believe me?"

Although he was smiling, there was no warmth in his eyes.

He clearly felt that the eyes behind those lenses were colder than the snowy night outside.

Those eyes seemed to see through his heart.

Adrian shivered slightly, speaking with a stutter. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

"Mr.... Mr. Sterling, rest assured, I... I will certainly not disappoint you."

"That’s good." Henry nodded satisfactorily, "I wish Mr. Chamberlain... a speedy recovery and discharge."

Catching the underlying meaning, Adrian was overjoyed.

"Thank you, Mr. Sterling."

The Sterling family’s power needs no further mention; since Henry said so, he must have his own ways.

To avoid court appearance, he had been hiding in the ward for several days already.

If he lay here any longer, Adrian would go mad; he’d get sick even if he wasn’t sick.

Henry turned his face slightly to look at the weather outside.

"It’s getting late, Mr. Chamberlain. Rest early, Mr. Sterling will take his leave now."

Adrian hurriedly jumped out of bed to see him to the door.

Watching Henry leave, he let out a soft breath, "I wonder when I can be discharged."

The lawyer smiled, "Tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?" Adrian looked surprised.

"Yes, tomorrow." The lawyer smiled inscrutably, "In fact, I’ve already obtained proof from the psychiatrist stating that your mental state is unsuitable for court testimony. Just present it to the court."

"Then why didn’t you say so earlier?" Adrian reached for his arm, asking displeasedly, "You’ve left me here almost growing mold."

"Because..." The lawyer’s smile faded, his face showing coldness, "I only follow Mr. Sterling’s orders."

Adrian was no fool; he had already guessed the truth.

This well-known lawyer agreeing to be his attorney was certainly Henry’s arrangement.

At this moment, he was just a pawn in Henry’s hands. If he didn’t want to be discarded, he had to fight for Henry and be at his service.

There’s no gain without risk.

Adrian was never one to play by the rules.

Now, having finally clinched onto Henry’s big leg, he wasn’t about to let the opportunity slip by.

Retracting his grip on the lawyer’s arm, Adrian smiled slightly.

"Then please tell Mr. Sterling that I, Adrian Chamberlain, will remember this favor well. I will also prove to Mr. Sterling that I am a pawn worthy of his trust."

"Very well." The lawyer nodded with satisfaction, "I will convey that message."

Adrian turned around, in his patient gown, walked to the window, and gazed at the vast expanse of snow outside, the despondency on his face long gone.

Ethan Sterling, just you wait.

I will join forces with your brother to send you to hell, and take back everything that belongs to me — be it Zenith or Seraphina Thorne.

...

...

Second floor bedroom of the Thorne Villa.

Seraphina Thorne lay on the pillow, her brow tightly furrowed.

"No, no... Ethan!"

Suddenly waking from the nightmare, Seraphina sat up and looked around, realizing it was just a dream, she sighed a breath of relief.

Outside the door, footsteps rushed.

Ethan Sterling pushed the door open and walked in quickly.

Seeing the somewhat shaken Seraphina, he walked over swiftly, pulling the quilt over her shoulders, and wiped the sweat from her forehead with a tissue.

"What, did you have a nightmare?"

"Yes." Seraphina shook her head self-deprecatingly, "I dreamed it snowed heavily, and once we went out, you suddenly disappeared. I searched and searched, finally found you, but... you were just ahead, yet I couldn’t catch up no matter how I called, you didn’t turn around."

"Even if there’s chasing, it’s me chasing you, why would you chase me?" He ruffled her hair, kissing her forehead reassuringly, "Don’t worry, dreams are the opposite of reality; this dream surely signifies we... will never be apart."
