Marrying My Bestie's Ferocious Brother - He Calls Me His Baby!-Chapter 14: My Man Dotes on Me! One Sentence Infuriates the Gossiping Military Wives!
Sister in law Wang’s eyes were fixed intently on that dish of crisp cucumber slices, so green they seemed to shimmer like they were touched by the morning dew.
The fresh aroma, tinged with garlic, was heady and overwhelming her senses, making the dark, moldy-smelling gruel in her hands seem particularly pungent and disgusting.
Inside the room, the two people seemed not to notice her at the door at all.
Lin Wan Yi had a cloyingly sweet smile on her face, and she even reached out naturally to smooth a crease on Gu Yanshen’s military uniform.
"Try this, it’s still warm." Her voice was soft and sticky, like honey.
Under Sister in law Wang’s fiery gaze, Gu Yanshen picked up the spoon and scooped a ladle of steaming white porridge. The green vegetables sprinkled on top were as green as jade, lightly trembling with the steam.
As he put the porridge into his mouth, the tense frown on his face relaxed instantly, and the cold and forbidding aura around him seemed to be melted by the hot porridge.
A dry, jealous gulp sounded from Sister in law Wang’s throat.
And it wasn’t over yet.
Lin Wan Yi picked up a chopstick of cucumber slices, still glistening with juice, and without even glancing at Sister in law Wang, she directly brought the chopsticks to Gu Yanshen’s lips, the gesture intimate without a gap.
"Try this, it’s refreshing."
Gu Yanshen’s body stiffened for a moment, his ears turning red at a visible pace.
But he didn’t avoid it.
Under the malevolent gaze at the door, he slightly lowered his head, opened his mouth, and ate the cucumber slice.
"Crunch—"
The crisp sound of chewing was as clear as a loud slap in the still morning.
Each sound hit Sister in law Wang’s face with precision.
The few heads eavesdropping outside the yard also let out suppressed gasps simultaneously.
The day had just begun, and what Mr. Gu’s household was eating was better than what they had for New Year!
"This... where did this cucumber come from?" Sister in law Wang finally found her voice, shrill and twisted with jealousy. She pointed at the cucumber dish, her fingers trembling.
Lin Wan Yi finally spared her a second of her gaze.
She blinked her watery eyes, her expression innocent and bewildered.
"Oh, this," she drew out her tone and then leaned affectionately toward Gu Yanshen, her voice filled with boastfulness and coyness, "My man dotes on me, knows I can’t get used to the food here, so he especially had someone bring it from a place far, far away."
She deliberately enunciated "my man" with emphasis, as if proclaiming ownership.
The words were like a boulder, blocking all of Sister in law Wang’s subsequent questions.
Source? Mr. Gu got it. How? It’s none of your business. He’s the captain!
This was not just showing off food, it was flaunting the man!
Sister in law Wang’s face flushed to a pig liver color, looking at Gu Yanshen, who was a picture of calm, and then at that little vixen who smiled like a fox, she almost fainted from anger.
Lin Wan Yi wasn’t going to let her go just yet.
She turned back to Gu Yanshen, complaining in a half-joking, sweet tone, "Hubby, don’t spend so much next time. Look, you’re making the sisters so envious, how am I supposed to get along with them in the yard later?"
This pleased-with-herself statement was the last straw that broke Sister in law Wang.
"You... you..." Her lips quivering, she wanted to curse "shameless," but when met with Gu Yanshen’s suddenly cold glance, she swallowed all the curses back down.
That look, like a knife dipped in ice, sent a chill from her scalp to her toes.
Sister in law Wang could no longer stay; the aroma of cucumber now smelled like a death knell. She turned and fled as if chased by wild dogs, her figure pitifully disheveled.
The eavesdroppers outside the yard scattered like birds and beasts instantly, too.
"Bang."
Lin Wan Yi stood up, leisurely closed the battered wooden door, shutting out all the outsiders and jealousy.
The room became quiet again.
She turned around; the sweet smile faded, replaced by a glint of cunning.
She sat back at the table, just picked up her bowl, and found the man across was looking at her without moving.
That gaze was deep, like an ancient well, emotionless.
"Why are you looking at me? Hurry and eat, it won’t taste good if it gets cold." Lin Wan Yi casually scooped a spoonful of porridge for herself.
Gu Yanshen said nothing.
He picked up the chopsticks and transferred all the glossy pieces of preserved meat from his bowl, which the troops distributed yesterday and he hadn’t had the heart to eat, into Lin Wan Yi’s bowl, leaving none behind.
Lin Wan Yi paused, watching him. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
The man finally spoke, voice low, with an indomitable certainty, "Anything that’s mine," he paused, his gaze falling on her smiling face, "you can say whatever you like about it."
This was indulgence.
An overbearing, unconditional indulgence that belonged to Gu Yanshen.
Lin Wan Yi’s heart felt lightly bumped by something. She burst into a laugh, her eyes curving, gleaming brightly.
She picked up a piece of preserved meat, put it in her mouth, chewed, and spoke indistinctly, "This is just an appetizer."
She laid down her chopsticks, leaned forward, supporting herself with her hands on the table, like a little fox declaring ownership of its territory.
"Mr. Gu," her voice thick with undisguised excitement and challenge, "are you ready to accept the whole courtyard’s envy?"
Gu Yanshen watched her vibrant demeanor, after a while, he finally moved his gaze away.
He picked up the spoon and continued sipping the now warm porridge.
But this time, the corners of his usually tightly-pressed lips showed an extremely subtle, almost imperceptible upward curve.
