Chapter 158 - Vague Memory

"Her?" Jean glanced at the unconscious Rogue and nodded slowly.

Reid's suggestion wasn't wrong. She also felt that this girl's ability might hide some kind of secret.

The power to absorb life energy was very dangerous. Even someone like herself could be hurt by it if caught off guard.

Yet Charles had never mentioned that to her.

Jean didn't believe the professor would be careless enough to overlook something like this. That left only one explanation: he never intended for her to know from the start.

He was definitely planning something behind her back.

"I understand," she said calmly. "I'll investigate the truth myself. But as for you..."

She abruptly turned her gaze toward Reid and unleashed her telekinesis. An invisible force surged forward, wrapping around him and locking his body in place.

"I don't think I've shown any hostility toward you. So what exactly are you trying to do right now?"

Even though Jean had him frozen in place with her invisible telekinetic grip, Reid showed no sign of panic. He simply moved one finger, and that small motion made her frown slightly.

"You can still move?" Her gaze sharpened. "Looks like you're not just some human with psychic abilities after all."

She looked into his eyes, now filled with interest.

It was pure curiosity.

"Whether you mean me harm or not, does that have anything to do with what I plan to do?" she replied. "I'm interested in you. And if you ask me, rather than getting the truth from this girl, I find it far more compelling to capture you and pull it from your mouth, or better yet, your mind."

"Haha..." Reid chuckled at first, then suddenly burst out laughing. "Hahahaha! You really didn't disappoint me, Jean Grey. You've truly become what I expected."

As he spoke, his body began to fade into nothing. Even Jean's telekinesis couldn't hold onto him. He slipped through her control effortlessly and appeared right in front of her.

"He vanished?" Jean felt a flicker of alarm at the power Reid had just shown. She instinctively tried to back away, but he grabbed her wrist.

The strength he had gained from Martian Manhunter made it impossible for her to break free. Even with the help of her telekinesis, all she could do was make his hand tremble slightly as he held her.

'This strength... it's overwhelming. And it's not that his power makes him disappear, it's just... so small, so refined, that no force can really affect him.'

Jean quickly understood the nature of his ability, and in that instant, prepared herself for a desperate fight. The man's power had far exceeded her expectations.

But just as she braced for his attack, Reid's body suddenly burst apart, exploding into a flurry of roses that drifted gently through the air.

Most of them ignited as they touched the air, burning away in small bursts of flame. But one single petal floated down and landed softly in her palm.

"This is..."

Their meeting had begun with a rose. Even Jean's infection by the virus had started with nothing more than an ordinary rose.

In truth, this was only the second time she had met Reid in a real sense.

Charles had buried all memories of him deep in Jean's subconscious, fearing that if she ever saw him again, those memories would resurface. But what truly awakened those memories wasn't Reid's face—it was the rose. That was the real key to unlocking the past.

Countless fragments of memory flickered through Jean's mind, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't clearly recall what those memories were.

'Damn it... my mind...'

The flashing fragments slowly faded. Jean still couldn't remember anything concrete about Reid. Maybe it was because all the memories she had of him were born from her own fantasies, nothing solid enough to recall.

Still, even though she hadn't reverted to that obsessive, love-struck version of herself, Jean now knew one thing for sure: someone had tampered with her mind.

And that person was obviously Charles. He was the only one with both the ability and the opportunity to do it.

"Bastard..." she growled through clenched teeth as rage surged through her.

Her bloodshot eyes lit with power, unleashing a wave of telekinetic force that exploded outward, uprooting trees and hurling them through the air. The surrounding forest bent and cracked under the immense pressure.

Only after the devastation settled did Jean begin to calm down.

She turned her gaze toward the battlefield where Deathstroke, Logan, and Ororo were.

"James Howlett... that man might still be useful. But you... you worthless woman..."

Back to the present—

After forcing Deathstroke to retreat, Jean ignored Ororo's desperate plea to kill him and instead calmly watched the man vanish into the distance.

"Jean! What are you doing?! He'll report everything back to the humans... you—"

Bang!

Ororo's head was crushed in an instant by Jean's telekinesis.

It was the same method she had once used to kill Scott, driven by the illusion in her heart.

Jean had already used her psychic powers to build a mental shield. She was certain Charles wouldn't see what had just happened, or at the very least, there would be no evidence that she had killed Ororo.

Then, she used her powers to lift Logan off the ground and supported his heart, helping it beat again, just enough to keep him alive.

"Now, let's go see what that old man is really planning," muttering to herself, Jean flew toward Westchester, carrying both Rogue and the barely breathing Logan.

Not long after her departure, Reid appeared at the scene, accompanied by Deathstroke, whose injuries had already been fully healed.

Without needing instruction, the mercenary stepped forward and lifted Ororo's corpse from the ground on his own.

"Another test subject that'll probably make Luthor lose more hair."

"You'd better not let Luthor hear that. Otherwise, he'll make sure your hairline matches his."

Reid gave a small jab, then looked at the direction Jean had flown off in. He turned back to the mercenary and said, "From here on, return to William's side."

"Have the mutants found him?" Deathstroke asked curiously, adjusting Ororo's body in his arms.

"Under normal circumstances, Charles wouldn't pay attention to someone like William, a regular human colonel. But unfortunately, today he will be meeting with the President of the United States. He's going to formally propose a full-scale search and raid on Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. And now that Ororo is dead, Charles can only rely on a bunch of kids who barely know how to fight. The chances of those brats attacking William aren't low at all."

...

Elsewhere, Jean had returned to the school. She handed Rogue and Logan over to Hank in the lab, then turned and left without even attempting to see the professor.

Inside his office, Charles was making his seventh global psychic sweep. When he confirmed that Ororo's brainwaves had completely vanished, he finally pieced together what had happened in Canada.

"...Jean," he whispered. "So it's come to this..."
