Chapter 122: You, I Know You
.................
"The path you walk; hunting Hydra; it is hopeless. Hydra is immortal. Cut off one head, two more shall take its place."
Adam was silent for a long moment. Then, slowly, an eerie smile spread across his face; the smile of someone remembering a very private, very funny joke.
"You know," He said, his voice conversational, "The day I escaped Hydra's sex dungeon was a very memorable day."
"One of your colleagues; a chief researcher, the one who made my childhood a highlight reel of horrors; said something very similar. What was the quote..."
He tapped his chin with a blood-finger. "'There are no eternal allies. There are no eternal enemies. Only eternal interests.'"
His smile widened. "Do you know what I told him? I told him I agree completely. My interest is to destroy Hydra. To make them experience hell."
He shrugged, the motion fluid. "But you're right about one thing. Life is one big, funny joke. It's hilarious. I don't take it seriously at all."
"But I'm also emotionally immature, and if there's one thing that gets me going, it's spite. I'm so spiteful I won't stop at anything to make Hydra suffer."
He took a step forward, eyes still closed. "Case in point. When I was doing some investigation in New York, I accidentally stumbled upon a Hydra agent. Low-level. Nobody important. But I was feeling... creative."
His voice took on a dreamy quality. "I didn't kill him. That would have been merciful. Instead, I used my gifts to hack every device in his life. His phone. His computer. His smart thermostat. His toaster."
"I made his toaster burn his bread every morning for a month. I made his phone play whale songs at 3 AM. I made his car radio only play Nickelback."
"I made his smartphone accidentally order seventy-five pounds of lutefisk, yeah, not a fun experience."
He giggled. "His wife left him. His dog started barking at him. His neighbors filed three noise complaints. His credit score dropped eighty points because I bought a timeshare in his name."
"When he finally quit Hydra out of sheer existential despair, I followed him to his new job and made his new boss's computer send him passive-aggressive emails every hour."
"He now works at a gas station in Delaware and has weekly panic attacks whenever he sees a toaster."
"And here is the kicker, he knows someone's out to get him, maybe god punishing him, but he could do nothing about it."
"It was hopeless because his psychiatrist diagnosed him with schizophrenia due to some generous gifts from an anonymous source, so even the Police just think he's insane."
He laughed, bright and genuine. "I could have killed him. But I made him wish he was dead. That's the Cypher special. Death is easy. Despair is art... HahahaHAHAHA!"
[...] [?????] [????] [??????] [???] [...]
[TF?????????] [What in Hydra?!] [On my mama, he's insane!]
[WTF?] [Okay...] [I'm speechless.]
[The Toaster Story will be an instant classic, trust.]
["Seventy-five pounds of lutefisk." RIP.]
[He's more unhinged and spiteful than my ex-wife, and she took everything, the kids, the house, the money, the mistress, the side chick, and my cock too.]
[...] [???] [Today is a strange day.] [I think I'm high.]
Even the Gorgon's impassive mask cracked. His lips tightened almost imperceptibly.
The soldiers exchanged glances, their fear of the monster before them warring with a new, dawning horror of what he represented.
Shishido recovered quickly. "Unfortunate," He said. "A man of your talents would fit right in with us."
"The hypocrisy is ironic, is it not? That someone so immoral would cosplay as a hero to the world. Utterly ridiculous."
Adam's smile stopped.
His expression shifted; not to anger, but to something colder. He raised a blood-finger and pointed directly at the Gorgon.
"You know, I know you," He said softly. "I know a lot about you."
Shishido's posture stiffened.
"Tomi Shishido. At age eighteen, you murdered your entire family. Your parents. Your little sister. Your only friend from school." Adam's voice was flat, reciting facts from a file.
"You used your power to petrify them. Turned them into statues. And then you kept them; as decorations in your apartment."
"You have killed children and preserved them as art. You created a cult that terrorized Japan for years. Bombings. Assassinations. Massacres."
He tilted his head, eyes still closed, but somehow seeing perfectly. "We are not the same."
The silence that followed was absolute.
Shishido's composure crumbled. Not dramatically; a slight widening of the eyes behind those glasses, a nearly imperceptible tremor in his hands. But for a man of his control, it was a scream.
The soldiers around him shifted uneasily. They had known the Gorgon was dangerous, a weapon to be pointed at enemies.
But this? Family murder? Child statues? The man beside them was not just a killer; he was something far darker.
And worse; far, far worse; was the question burning in Shishido's mind... How does he know?
There were no files on his past. No records. He had erased them all, decades ago, with fire and blood. Only a few in Hydra knowof his past.
Now, the grinning demon joins them.
[Spit your facts, brother!! The Gorgon is one of the most psychotic humans in Marvel!!]
[All the more weird why he was accepted into Krakoa by the X-Men.]
[Yeah, it's weird how some unredemable villains were just accepted, like, isn't the Gorgon a Nihilist who only lives for destruction? So, why?]
[For the plot.]
[Mark my words, Adam is heading into the villain path.]
Shishido's voice, when it came, was a blade wrapped in silk. "You are too dangerous to live."
Adam laughed. "Finally! An honest statement!"
He took another step forward. "You'll hear something soon; a sound like glass breaking. That's one of my mechanical cuties releasing a little gift into the air. Poison. Custom-made. Very lethal."
He smiled. "So for Hydra... do your best to eliminate your eternal nemesis. Oh, and you were right about one thing earlier. I am immoral. So expect only the worst from me."
A sharp crack echoed through the laboratory. One of Adam's mechanical spiders, perched high on a support beam, shattered a glass vial clutched in its legs. A fine, silvery mist began to disperse through the ventilation system.
Chaos erupted.
Plasma fire screamed across the room; dozen of rifles unleashing their full fury.
Green-blue bolts of pure energy filled the air, melting steel, vaporizing concrete, turning everything they touched to slag.
The soldiers were terrified, and terrified men with plasma guns were indiscriminate.
Just what the fuck is wrong with this maniac!!? He's in the room!! Could it be that the poison has no effect on him!? Either way, his unhinged nature terrified them.
Adam became mist.
The black-red vapor flowed between the plasma bolts, through them, around them.
Where energy touched vapor, it passed without effect. He was untouchable, a ghost in the storm of destruction.
Then the mist condensed into human form, a hundred separate points of blood following, each one a razor-sharp blood spike. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
They shot outward in every direction, impaling soldiers through body armor, through helmets, through the fragile meat beneath. A dozen men fell in the first second.
Shishido moved.
He was fast; supernaturally fast, his body honed by decades of assassination and combat.
His sword appeared in his hand as if summoned, a blade of folded steel that sang through the air toward the nearest concentration of mist.
It's very unlikely for something to exist that doesn't have a weakness or a counter, including the mist form, which Adam can not keep up for too long, way too exhausting, and a toll on his mind.
Adam reformed, ducking under the strike, his blood-arm solidifying into a jagged blade to parry.
Their weapons met with a shriek of metal. Shishido pressed the attack, his sword a blur of killing strokes, each one aimed at a vital point.
Adam retreated, dodged, deflected; but his eyes remained closed.
How? Shishido's mind raced. He can't see me. He CAN'T.
But Adam saw everything. His technopathy linked him to the mechanical spiders scattered throughout the room, to the drone circling above, to every camera and sensor near.
He had a hundred eyes, and none of them were in his head.
He flowed around Shishido's guard, not engaging, instead targeting the remaining soldiers.
A Hydra operative tried to flank him; Adam's blood-arm elongated, spearing him through the chest from twenty feet away.
Another raised his plasma rifle; Adam became mist, reformed behind him, and twisted. The body dropped.
Shishido pursued, relentless, his sword always met mist or blood or empty air.
Adam was playing with him, harvesting the soldiers while keeping the Gorgon contained but not defeated.
It was infuriating. It was humiliating.
And then Adam began to mimic him.
A blade of blood formed in his hand; not a jagged spike this time, but a perfectly formed katana, curved and balanced and gleaming like wet ruby, mimicking Shishido's blade.
He met Shishido's next strike with a parry that was identical to the Gorgon's own style.
The follow-up riposte mirrored a technique Shishido had invented himself and had just tried to use.
"You're... learning from me? Fight Me!!" Shishido snarled, his composure finally shattering into naked fury.
"Observing," Adam corrected, his eyes still closed, a serene smile on his lips. "Understanding. You're a fascinating specimen, Tomi, almost going gay for u. Such controlled violence. Such artistry. I want to remember this."
