Chapter 249: Chapter 249 Otaku

Memories poured into his brain like a waterfall crashing down from a thousand feet.

A mischievous childhood, a clueless adolescence, a bitter youth, a mature middle age, and finally, the recent events.

The Joker Organization, Jason Walter, the New York explosion, the overflowing hospitals...

Alex felt as if he had been strapped into a theater seat, forced to watch decades of the security captain’s life play out.

As he accepted these memories, the flesh and blood he had absorbed coalesced on the surface of his body, reshaping him into the captain’s appearance.

Dozens of seconds later, the memory assimilation was complete, and the splitting headache receded like a tide.

Alex clenched his fist. He felt his strength had increased slightly, and the injuries on his body were healing.

"Captain, are you alright?"

Someone shouted from the stairwell.

"I’m fine, I’m coming up."

Alex answered with the captain’s accent, then adjusted the captain’s clothes and walked over.

At the top of the stairs leading to the upper level, the three doctors were sitting on the floor in terror, bodies trembling, lips pale, clutching their cups tightly.

Four security guards were accompanying the doctors. One of them saw Alex and immediately asked, "Captain, what exactly happened?"

The three doctors also quietly looked up, wanting to know the answer.

"That corpse was fake. Just a bored young punk who sneaked in while security was busy. He probably wanted to pull a prank to scare people."

"That’s impossible. Many of his physical states were exactly like a cadaver," One doctor argued.

Alex didn’t panic and offered a plausible explanation. "If he wanted to scare you, he naturally had to put in the effort. The kid put on special makeup to look dead. I didn’t expect you guys to actually fall for it."

"This..." The doctor hesitated, recalling the details from earlier.

"Captain, I heard gunshots just now."

Alex’s face changed, and he leaned in close to the guard’s ear, whispering with a distressed look, "That damn bastard tried to scare us. We panicked and... he got shot to death."

"Ah! You killed someone! What do we do?"

"Relax, this is a morgue; having a dead body here is perfectly normal. The others are already handling it. Once the hearse arrives tomorrow morning, all evidence will be turned to ash. But until the hearse gets here, you need to guard this spot. Under no circumstances let anyone in."

Hearing the captain’s plan, the guard sighed in relief, finding it very feasible.

Alex shot them a glance. They understood the implication immediately and quickly helped the three doctors leave.

Walking out of the basement to the first floor, a dense crowd blocked the way.

Suppressing the urge to feast, Alex said, "There was blood. I’m in a bad mood, so I’m heading home for the night."

"Captain, go back and rest. I’ve got everything here."

Alex smiled, patted him on the shoulder, and then used brute force to squeeze through the crowd.

The air outside was much fresher. Alex took a breath, looked up at the starry sky, then took the keys from his pocket and headed to the parking lot.

Judging from the memories he now had, he guessed he had amnesia. The priority was to retrieve his memories.

At the same time, he needed to rest and research this miraculous body of his.

He had just killed people in the morgue; he estimated he could keep it under wraps until tomorrow morning at best.

Given the speed of police investigations, they would likely identify him by noon. So, he couldn’t return to the security captain’s home.

To remain undetected for the time being, he needed to find someone who lived alone—a recluse who wouldn’t contact the outside world for weeks at a time and whom no one would report missing.

Alex searched the security captain’s memories and found he actually knew such a person. Their relationship was merely a nodding acquaintance, so even if the police investigated the captain, they wouldn’t trace it to this person immediately.

"You’re the one."

Alex locked onto his target and sat in a Ford pickup truck.

After gaining the captain’s memories, he understood many counter-surveillance techniques. He drove around the city for half a circuit before finally entering a small road with no surveillance cameras. He abandoned the vehicle and walked to the target’s residence.

The target was a severe recluse—an obese shut-in living in a standard apartment in West Manhattan. No degree, no skills, no friends. He relied on his parents’ inheritance to stay at home all day, eating and waiting to die.

Alex climbed the wall into the complex, avoided security and cameras, and knocked on the brass door.

Knock, knock, knock!

After a few knocks, a weak voice came from inside.

"Who is it?"

"Property management."

"Property management... wait a moment."

The door opened, and a fat white man in a tank top and shorts appeared.

The fat man looked him up and down, frowning slightly as he searched his memory for the person before him.

"Hey, aren’t you... Urgh!"

Alex reached out and gripped his throat, lifting him up with one hand, then stepped inside and closed the door.

"Urgh... ack... ack..."

Crack!

The fingers exerted force, and the fat man’s throat was crushed.

Blood vessels burst out from Alex’s body, devouring the fat man completely, not sparing a single drop of blood.

After digesting the memories, the flesh on Alex’s body churned, and he reverted to his original appearance.

His injuries healed a bit more, and his strength increased again.

As expected, as long as he consumed humans, he could grow.

But what exactly was the principle behind this?

Alex walked into the bedroom, exited the game the fat man had been playing, and began searching the internet.

The security captain indeed held a lot of authority in the hospital. Upon receiving his orders, the stairwell leading to the morgue was guarded by two security officers. They didn’t let anyone in, even getting into a minor conflict with the doctors.

The sun rose; the next day had finally arrived.

The government hearse drove into the hospital. The two guards, following the captain’s instructions, waited for their teammates in the morgue to finish the handover before allowing access.

But after waiting a while, the hearse driver ran over to ask why no one had appeared yet.

The two guards looked curious. A whole night should have been more than enough to dispose of a body. Did they fall asleep from exhaustion?

So, one guard stayed at the door while the other walked into the morgue to check. Since they were in on the secret, they weren’t afraid of leaks.

The morgue was dimly lit and quiet enough to give someone the creeps.

The guard walked down the stairs. At a glance, he saw several colleagues lying on the floor. From a distance, he could see the blood that had already turned black and the bullet casings scattered everywhere.

"Fuck!"

He walked over quickly, and then he was completely dumbstruck.

The hospital called the police immediately. Ten minutes later, police and forensic examiners arrived.

Tests confirmed that all three men were dead. The time of death was between 9:00 PM and 11:00 PM the previous night. There had been a struggle before death; two died from crushed skulls, and the other died from excessive blood loss.

The three deceased were all hospital security guards. The police immediately took the two guards from the door to the security room for questioning.

Facing police interrogation, the two dared not hide anything and explained everything they knew in detail.

The corpse coming to life, the gunshots, the prank...

When the interrogation ended, the security captain immediately became the prime suspect in the eyes of the police.

The police notified patrol officers nearby to check his home, only to learn that the suspect hadn’t returned home all night.

Even his phone was turned off.
