The jet hovered down to him, and its hatch opened up, releasing a puff of white gas
A figure stepped through:
A tall lady with long dark hair and a pair of crimson eyes, who looked right at him with hints of relief.
"You still walk?"
She asked, watching Everlearn jump down the rock he sat on, before jumping up and landing on the hatch stairs.
"I'm fine, and thank you."
He said, before stepping into the jet.
The interior was far larger than expected.
Everlearn stood upright with ease, and even Boss Ash, who stood three meters tall, had no trouble doing the same.
It was almost as if the place had been tailored for her.
The seats, though, were in a bizarre color, dark, with red trimming instead of the usual white.
Everlearn didn't spend much time pacing around and instead chose a random seat near the window, where he sat quietly.
Silence enveloped him for a while, only to be broken by the sound of footsteps that came to a pause by his side.
"I'm heading back to X Base,"
He stated his destination to her, watching her take a seat.
"I know, and the jet is en route on autopilot…"
She replied, and he nodded before turning back to the window.
Silence reigned for quite a while before,
"Everlearn?"
The call came, and he nodded, looking out quietly at the clouds.
"Everlearn"
She called once more, and he forced out a
"Yes."
A hand grabbed his shoulder, pulling him away from the window.
"Why are you avoiding me?"
She asked, a curious grin on her lips.
"Am I avoiding you?"
He asked in return.
Boss Ash reached her hands out to his hair, and unconsciously he moved back a few inches.
Her hands paused, and her crimson eyes looked at him.
"See?"
He did not reply, simply turning back to the window.
"Still disappointed?"
"I told you it was fine…" 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
He replied quietly.
"Was it, though?"
"What does it even matter…"
"It does matter."
"How?"
He asked, turning to her.
"Do you still remember the deal we had?"
Boss Ash asked, and his brows creased.
"It was you working for me, and in return—"
"You'll safeguard my secrets… I know."
He completed.
"Have I failed you?"
She asked.
"No, you haven't. And I don't think I have either, so… things are fine."
He ended.
"No, things aren't fine, Everlearn."
"How can you work for me if you don't even want to look into my eyes at all?"
"You just give me an order, and I'll follow through. That's all."
"There's no need to look into your eyes."
He replied, and silence enveloped them both.
"Look at me."
"Stop it."
"That's an order."
She said, her tone firmer, but he remained unmoving.
"It doesn't help you in any way. It's a dumb order."
"It does help."
She said, but silence was what answered.
"What do you want, Everlearn?"
"I just want to get back to X Base."
He mused quietly.
"I know you're mad. Mad at me for not wanting to give you an X Mission, or having you out of the Academy."
"I know all you wanted to do was help, but I was helping you too by asking you to stay in."
"I wanted to make sure you're safe, and away from the danger of the Nakros."
She said, but he did not reply.
"My job, my part of the deal, was your protection. How can you be so mad at me simply for fulfilling my end of the deal?"
She asked, noticing him quietly stir from his seat.
"I'm not mad for that…"
He said, watching her pause.
"I'm mad… because you think I'm still a kid that needs protection."
"You think I'm weak, or at least not strong enough to be of any use to you."
"You must feel like I'm… useless."
He whispered, and her crimson eyes shook.
"I've never once thought you were useless."
She said, continuing quietly, "Not once."
"I'm strong now, Boss Ash. I don't need protection anymore…"
He said, and she raised her head to him, staring at that face in quiet disbelief.
It was so familiar, yet seemed so… strange.
"Is that what you really want? Out of the deal?"
She whispered.
"Maybe. If you ever have an important task for me in the future, I—"
"No."
Boss Ash said, cutting him off.
"You're not getting out of the deal. Not you, not me…"
"I've been out of it long ago…"
Everlearn replied.
"Long when the world was falling into chaos, and all you did was tell me to sit at the Academy and do nothing?"
"It's been over since then, Boss Ash."
He said, and she hummed quietly, before sitting upright with her back against the seat.
Her hands reached for her coat, bringing out a cigarette box.
Quietly, she lit one up,
"You say to me that it's over, yet you call me Boss."
Boss Ash said with a smile, taking a deep inhale of the cigarette before exhaling in relief.
"In a way, you know, I knew this day would come."
"The day you would say no to me...the day you would try to fight back."
"Maybe I wasn't expecting it to come this soon...or maybe I got too relaxed."
She said, exhaling a cigarette puff.
"Is this really necessary?" she whispered.
In the next instant, her left hand flashed to her coat, reaching for her katana.
SHRII—
The sound of a blade being pulled rapidly out of its sheath echoed out, yet it never completed.
Boss Ash turned to her hand to find a finger resting on her elbow, stopping her from pulling further back.
"You'll get hurt… very hurt."
He whispered to her as she turned to him, finding him looking to the side, avoiding her gaze.
"Will it hurt you?"
She suddenly asked, and he paused, turning to her.
"You can feel it too, right? How hurting me will hurt you…"
BAADUUMP
BAADUUMP
BAADUUMP
The sound of a heartbeat skyrocketing echoed through the jet, and it came from none other than Everlearn.
Her words resounded in his head.
Hurting me… will hurt you.
It described things so well.
How he felt now.
A fight with her, before it started at all, he could already feel a pain he couldn't explain filling his heart.
A pain as if his heart was being stabbed by a sword.
An overwhelming guilt that almost drove him to tears.
And in the end, quietly, he took his fingers back.
SHRIIIIIIIIIING
The sound of the katana being fully unsheathed rang out, and Everlearn looked up, just to freeze in shock.
His shoulder was pinned to the chair by her left hand, while inches away from his neck was her Katana.
Crimson energy undulating from its edges, quiet and deadly.
SLIIIP
Red liquid slipped out from Everlearn's neck, and his skin was quietly sliced by the sharp energy from the katana.
Turning to look beyond the sword, he found that crimson gaze, emotionless and cold, just like ever.
He didn't ought to be surprised at all, yet he felt pain.
So much pain.
Ash watched quietly as his hands slowly raised.
She expected him to grab her sword, but...he didn't.
Instead, the hands reached for his heart, quietly squeezing his clothes.
"It...It hurts...so much."
He said, turning his head quietly to the side.
He closed his eyes, but the tears escaped faster.
The sight of them made Boss Ash's paused and quietly her hands began to quiver.
"I...?"
BAAADUUUMP!
"I...?"
BAADUUMP!
BAADUUMP!
BAADUUMP!
Her hands quiver so much that the sword quietly slipped from her grasp.
THUMP!
The noise of the katana falling onto the ground awakened Everlearn, whose eyes snapped open.
He turned back to her, eyes widening in shock as that beautiful face closed in on him.
A gentle touch followed, and a cold halo swept through his body, his heart pounding hard in his chest.
His eyes widened in shock, only to slowly shut, as he felt himself sinking into a bizarre pleasure.
Bizarre... as he had never felt such before.
It was cold.
So cold...yet so soft.
It quietly parted after a while, and he opened his eyes to find her taking a seat beside him.
Her hands grabbed his, placing them at her chest.
What he felt was her beating heart, and his eyes gleamed in shock.
It pounded so loudly, so heavily.
"It hasn't in twelve years now."
She whispered to him with a smile, though quietly, tears began to slip down both her cheeks.
Her hands reached for him, nudging him closer to her embrace as the tears spilled heavily.
"I'm sorry…"
"I'm so sorry…"
