Ishiki read through the whole thing, no matter how familiar it had become... it was nothing less than a fucking miracle to have such things as human. And three years were just not enough to get used to it.

Perhaps, the other humans who were born in this changed world would not be able to imagine a world without the constant danger of being chosen by the system or becoming A Xenon’s food.

’Sigh, the world has changed so much.’

He was at level 34 already and going to be 35 pretty soon, that if he could find and exterminate a camp of Xenons or maybe find a Tainted Demon.

But that was very rare and dangerous as well.

Becoming a Xenon was not the only thing that could happen to a human, there were things worst than that.

And the worst of it was to becoming Corrupted and be turned into a Tainted Demon. Tainted Demon’s retained their human parts, but their body could not be satisfied until they ate humans or Withering Beasts.

Finding Withering beasts in this world was not possible, so their only option was to eat humans... the dangerous thing about them was that were still players and they even got stronger by completing trials and Scenarios.

It was just that their Ascension paths differed greatly from normal humans. In the past 60 years, humans have completed 4 trials at most. No one has ever been able to complete the fifth trial and they did not know how much there were after that.

The strongest human right now, resided in the United States and he was getting old. He too was a person from the first generation of players just like Ishiki and the others who survived the Aethelburg’s Scenario and were transported to the future.

’Such bad luck... or maybe it was planned by the system for some reason.’

But those things didn’t matter much to him. Ishiki had managed to constantly grow and during his process he had saved enough Spiritual Fragments to get the skill called [Spatial Jump] and honestly it was one of the best skills he had.

Apart from that, [Ghost Blade] was about to reach level 3. he opened the skill information window and saw the number.

Skill Level - 2

Progress - 102/125

[Use Ghost Blade to kill 125 enemies to level up]

’So, I think I should Accept the trial after I reach level 35 and Ghost blade level’s up to 3. Then I will have to complete it before the Scenario Timer hits zero.’ He let his thoughts adrift. ’I can do all that if I wait another two, maybe three weeks.’

He suddenly felt a pang of irritation... in all honesty. It was a miracle that the Scenario timer was for more than three years. Maybe it was some kind of compensation, but still he was not all alone anymore to suddenly disappear.

He had to think about Nina. She was growing too fast for a normal human and he definitely could not leave her alone... but there was no one he trusted enough to leave her with.

He clenched his head and lowered it to the table. ’Screw it...’

The words once said by Filch still had a deep impact on him. ’Perhaps he was right. There is no Freedom... huh. ’

He looked out the glass wall and saw people going by their work. Were they free?

’At least they don’t have to worry about dying because their limited time on earth ended... We players truly are Slaves to the System and to our lives.’

he sighed... no one knew what the System’s actual goal was. What they knew was that NEXUS was not the only place where Scenario’s took place.

There were Multiple worlds where the System dumped players to! But to relief... If a player went to a Scenario in NEXUS, then all their Scenario’s would take place on NEXUS.

It was like they were registered there... and that world was their Playground.

’Ahh... I need to think of an Excuse for Nina. Find someone I can trust her with... and yeah her birthday is coming up. Well shit... her School changing time is approaching as well. ’

Shiro returned eight minutes later with the file under one arm and a second folder that Ishiki hadn’t asked for.

"The standard incident report," he said, setting the first on the desk. "And the patrol grid from the last two months β€” I pulled it in advance. I thought it might be relevant given the behavioral deviation mentioned in the witness accounts."

Ishiki looked at the second folder and thought.

He was, going to be more than manageable.

"Sit," he said.

Shiro sat.

Ishiki opened the incident report and read. The first page was a standard β€” timestamps, Player IDs with three Xenon units confirmed and no casualties.

The repair crews had been deployed in time. He read through the first four pages with a sweep. It had become a habit now... and there was not much written on them anyways.

But then... one line on the fifth page caught his attention. He read it and found it rather weird.

β€” The three units were not moving toward Player team or toward populated area., instead they were moving away from both. When cornered, one unit attempted to climb the wall rather than engage in battle as they typically do.β€”

He set it down and opened the patrol grid.

The Dusk Event had occurred on Seki Street, Ward 9 inner district, in front of a commercial block. He traced the patrol coverage, found the spawn point, and cross-referenced with the previous six months of incident locations.

It was very rare to have a Dusk event directly inside populated places. But this one was in the middle of the city and the Xenons were acting differently than usual.

"They spawned inside the Ward," Shiro said quietly, following the same line on the map. "Not at the border."

"Yes."

"That’s the first time in the records I pulled. All previous incidents this year are external."

"Yes."

"And then they moved away from everything edible."

Ishiki stood and picked up his jacket.

"We’re going to the site."
