Mercenary God: Reborn with a talent for fighting.-Chapter 36: Ch Origin of Idea.
Felix’s POV
Growing old, I always found myself looking back to that day.
The day I made the greatest mistake in my life.
--------
"So what do you say, Feli, are you up for the challenge?"
The sun glinted across the capital city’s skyline.
Walking among hundreds of people, I began with a sigh, my gaze falling on Silva, a silver haired knight I met years ago when I joined the knight Order.
He was from noble home, not quite as famous as the fierce Fenrir or the duty-bound Aegis.
Well it made sense, since those two, along with the other Grand Duke families, were the very foundation of our esteemed empire.
Back to Silva — recently, he had grown the need to prove himself to others.
He wasn’t always like this, making me suspect that he might have found himself a partner, one he wanted to be proud of him.
While I wasn’t one to judge.
Every knight wanted a princess — I too was no exception; I just hadn’t found the right one yet.
"Silva, look, if I’m being honest with you, I’m perfectly satisfied with my position in the capital. I’m not built like the Ravagers. I’d rather play defensive than be the attacker."
"Enough with your lies, brother. If you wanted to play defensive, you would have joined the Demonic Frontline. Admit it, you’re just scared."
Honestly, I couldn’t tell if the young man before me was just taunting me or trying to play reverse psychology on me.
If I were to assume, I’d say both — and damn it, did I fall for it, hook, line, and sinker.
"I’m not scared," I scoffed.
In honesty, I wasn’t scared... rather cautious.
For me to truly do something, I needed the right set piece, and right now, I didn’t have it.
Hunting demons might be my specialty, but I was only one man after all.
If my allies weren’t up to par, it might lead to my death; hence I preferred just keeping order in the capital.
Here, the most severe cases were demonized humans.
They were a nuisance, especially if the human had been a warrior or a mage, but they could be kept at bay just enough for me to handle them.
"Either brother, whether you’re scared or not doesn’t matter. You’re coming with me one way or another."
Watching him shrug as if everything was under his control, I frowned.
"In your dreams, Silva." I sighed and tried walking ahead, only to be tugged back.
"Camilla is going to be there!"
As if I had been given the most tempting offer I had ever heard, I came to a complete halt, the logical part of my mind twisting into the most absurd possibilities.
"Wait, is that actually true?"
Back then, I considered myself Camilla’s greatest fan.
As a knight and a woman, she was the strongest I had ever seen.
My admiration for her stemmed from the fact that even while not on the level of the Bladeheart brothers or the Sword Princess, she never played second fiddle to them.
She strived day and night.
Back when we were nothing but rookies at this whole knight business, I witnessed her undergo many nights without sleep, just so she could spend hours training her body to keep up with her colleagues.
That wasn’t to say Kain and Abel hadn’t put in hard work — those two were as determined as her, and yet never once did she feel inferior to them.
If that Camilla was really going to be there, then I had a capable ally.
"Fine!" I sighed and accepted Silva’s invitation for this mission.
The next day, all those who had also accepted gathered together at the headquarters within the southern district of the capital.
Camilla, Abel, Kain, Aurora, among other notable names — Kiara Fenrir and Hiro — all joined in on the briefing. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
Word had broken out that an isolated town nearing the borders of the Sorcery Kingdom was under siege by another threat.
The scouts sent hadn’t returned, so by the decree of the then Emperor, we were to launch an assault and claim back said land.
Strategies were made, arguments — especially between our two commanders, the Bladeheart brothers — were fought, and as usual, Aurora stepped in as the mediator to calm those two down.
At the end of the day, we realized those two would never agree on one thing, so we chose another representative — obviously Camilla — who took bits and pieces of their plans, modified it a bit, and presented it as a strategy.
After all of that planning, an opportunity was presented to those who didn’t want to partake in this mission.
Most like me were did not decline since we thought we had the Ravagers — the most elite soldiers of the modern empire on our side.
How wrong we were.
You see, our enemy was a virus in the literal sense.
It was a demon with the power to corrupt others.
Every piece of information we had gotten was provided by him, and when we surrounded the town back then, we didn’t know we had already fallen into his trap.
We were strong, and we were smart, but a plan formed from false intel came back to bite us in the ass.
The enemy first began by corrupting our soldiers, then using said soldiers, he slowly thinned down our numbers.
Too scattered to even realize it, we were taken care of one by one until only a twenty from fifty soilders remained.
By then, Camilla and the others had taken notice, but it was already too late.
Our forces were used against us.
On that day, those who managed to avoid its control tainted their hands with the blood of their comrades.
We had to kill those whom we loved to survive, to weaken the demon, and to set them free.
I wasn’t excluded. My friend Silva had been unlucky — he suffered the greatest tragedy of all as the demon took possession of his body.
Because of my unique ability in exorcising demons, I was forced to participate in the slaughter and killed my friend with my own two hands.
My story was but one of the many tragedies caused by demons.
Those creatures were unpredictable and had countless world-breaking abilities.
Some, even those of us almost at the apex of the world, couldn’t comprehend.
"That is my fear for demons... they’re unpredictable."
I told the boy, who had long since been caught in the demonic play of his uncle.
