Mercenary's War-Chapter 2118 - 2095: Honest People Are Scarier When Angry
It turned out that the dog was named Snow White.
When the artillery barrage occurred, people knew to lie down and find a safe place to hide, but dogs didn’t understand that, so the dog named Snow White began running around.
First of all, Vasilek mortars are rapid-firing, launching four shells in a group within two seconds, essentially semi-automatic mortars. However, while the firing speed is fast, the accuracy is inevitably poor, and the dispersion area is quite large.
If Vasilek aims directly at you, there’s less need to worry, as precisely hitting the target is unlikely. But if Vasilek fires randomly into an area, caution is advised. The firing speed is truly rapid, the number of shells is considerable, and anyone unlucky enough will be hit.
Thus, after Gao Yang and his team lay down, they didn’t need to worry too much about being hit by shells, except for the dog called Snow White.
When a shell suddenly exploded nearby, the dog immediately tucked its tail and started to dash off. However, after a robust man yelled, the dog halted, hesitated for a moment, and then, like a frightened child, ran towards the man.
The dog was indeed intelligent and obedient. Despite its fear, when the man called it back, it ran over to him.
With a boom, the blast from an 82mm mortar shell blew the dog named Snow White into the air.
The actual distance from the explosion’s center was more than ten meters, but the dog was still blasted into the air. A human in that situation would be instantly killed or incapacitated, but a dog’s resilience is notably stronger.
It struggled on the ground for a bit, then began crawling slowly towards the man. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Phoenix held her head in shock, exclaiming, "Oh no, they killed that adorable dog!"
The man, originally lying on the ground, rose to his feet and, dumbfounded, said, "Snow White, oh no, Snow White..."
The man went to the dog that was still crawling towards him, knelt down, and embraced the dog. Despite being hit by shrapnel and blown away by the blast, the dog was still alive, still crawling, able to whimper and stick out its tongue to lick the man’s hand.
Tears began streaming down the man’s face as he cried, "Snow White, it’s my fault, don’t die, please don’t die."
Vorvitsky shouted, "Get down!"
The man cried like a child, holding the dog named Snow White, kneeling on the ground and weeping.
Gao Yang shouted, "Fool! You didn’t kill it, it was the enemy, the enemy! Do you not understand? Without their shelling, how would your dog have died?"
The man was stunned, seemingly lost in his thoughts, while Gao Yang quietly said, "Look, my distraction technique worked, at least he won’t blame himself too much now."
Phoenix seemed on the verge of tears, sniffing, and said, "So moving, such a good little dog, just died like that, poor big guy, he must be heartbroken."
The man finally laid the dog on the ground, wiped his tears, and stood up promptly, and when he stood, it wasn’t slow at all.
The man began running vigorously, reaching a soldier lying down on the ground and loudly said, "Lend me your gun!"
Gao Yang shouted, "This is bad! Angry honest men are terrifying, don’t give him the gun!"
"What are you doing? Don’t act impulsively, big guy, it’s not your fault, you can’t..."
The man turned his head away, looked at a machine gunner, and said, "Lend me your gun."
The machine gunner had his gun next to him; upon hearing the man, he immediately crawled up and pressed the gun under him, urgently saying, "Don’t be impulsive, you..."
The man said no more, bent down and embraced the machine gunner like holding a child, gently lifted him up, and then took the gun with his other hand.
The machine gunner tried to retrieve the gun, but the man, holding the gun high with one hand, pulled the ammo belt off the machine gunner with his other hand, before lifting him and letting him drop to the ground.
With the ammo belt slung over his shoulder and neck, the PKM machine gun already equipped with an ammo belt in hand, he pulled the gun’s bolt back with a click and started to run.
Vorvitsky shouted, "Stop! I order you to stop, damn you, idiot!"
The man ignored his commander’s order entirely, holding the machine gun. Despite his stride seeming slow, once he stretched out his long legs, his running speed was frightening, his momentum intimidating, akin to a charging rhino or elephant.
Others tried to stop the man but were effortlessly pushed aside as if children trying to hold onto an adult.
Gao Yang awkwardly stood up, apologetically saying to Vorvitsky, "Sorry, I didn’t anticipate him being so impulsive."
The shelling ceased, and someone shouted to Vorvitsky, "Captain, what do we do?"
Vorvitsky, visibly annoyed, loudly said, "The enemy is attacking, return to your positions immediately, Yuri must not breach the line!"
Afterward, Vorvitsky drew his pistol, saying to Wizard, "Boss, this might be the enemy’s final frenzy, if so, the attack intensity will be huge, I’m heading to the front line."
After speaking, Vorvitsky shouted, "Guards!"
"Here!"
"You two check on Yuri, that bastard, if he’s alive, find a way to bring him back, watch your safety!"
Gao Yang bitterly shook his head, saying, "Let’s go check on him, Undying Bird, let’s see him."
Lilia urgently said, "I’ll go too."
Gao Yang hesitated, finally saying, "Alright, all ears to Undying Bird, Rabbit, let’s also go. Vorvitsky, give us two guns."
This time Gao Yang and Cui Bo intended to dig for another purpose, not to go to war, so they hadn’t brought guns.
Each took an AK74, and Gao Yang and the other three chased in the direction the man had disappeared.
They didn’t know how the man was doing during his charge, but Gao Yang felt he likely wouldn’t survive, feeling guilty for letting an honest man die was better than letting him blame himself.
No matter how big the man was, a bullet could end him, and larger targets are easier to hit.
So, if the man survived, it would be because he didn’t find the enemy or wasn’t noticed by them. After all, the enemy had only fired a rapid mortar round; whether it was a prelude to a large-scale attack or just a mere harassment remained unknown.
