Miss Witch's Devotion Has Gone… Twisted-Chapter 238: Loren’s Plans
The rest of Lilith's story held little value, being nothing more than classic fairytale tropes: a studious little girl from a poor family, a dead father, bullying from the stepsister brought by the stepmother, only to become a student of the Perpetual Observer, and under the Observer's tutelage, become the world's greatest scholar, even forgiving the stepsister who bullied her.
Such clichéd, cookie-cutter fairytales were of little worth, but Loren's objective for this trip was achieved. He not only obtained a powerful Tarot card but also learned a great deal of hidden knowledge.
He also deduced the situation with the gods. They had stolen the rules of this world, causing malfunctions in the Perpetual Observer and the Final Singer, preventing them from continuing their duties.
However, Loren had a question. With the Perpetual Observer's capabilities, such a thing shouldn't have happened. He should have been able to see their actions and intervene in time.
The Perpetual Observer had stacked the box of the Primal Songstress; even the Outer Gods probably couldn't escape his sight. A few Orthodox Gods shouldn't have been able to deceive him.
Loren speculated that this was likely due to the Perpetual Observer's negligence. The sensation of seeing everything wasn't pleasant, so he wouldn't keep that ability active all the time. The various Orthodox Gods seized that moment to steal the authority.
And to remedy this situation, the Perpetual Observer summoned Loren from another world.
However, Loren didn't completely believe all of this. To put it bluntly, the three Primordial Gods could very well be fabrications of the God of Pleasure. It wasn't the first time he had done something like this, and it fit his character perfectly.
Lilith told Loren many things. It was now late at night, and Lilith's stomach let out a rumble.
"I only had a few bites at the banquet before everything happened."
Lilith explained, feeling a bit embarrassed and afraid Loren would think she was gluttonous.
"Then let's have a midnight snack..."
Loren led Lilith out of the small room, used the communication device to call an attendant, and ordered some food, mostly desserts, as both Anna and Lilith had a sweet tooth.
The communication devices here were quite primitive. Their effective range was basically only a few dozen meters, and they could only transmit simple information, like a few letters.
A reference chart was placed next to the device, with each letter having a different meaning. Letter 'a' meant call an attendant, 'b' meant call a cleaner, 'c' meant call for a prostitute—that was the general idea. They had pretty much pushed this device to its limits.
Given this level of technology combined with infinite energy, development here should have been faster than in Loren's previous life. However, the Church had been consistently restricting technological advancement. Technology here hadn't changed for thousands of years. The incident with the Dawn Society was still fresh in the minds of the gods, so they couldn't possibly allow technology to develop freely.
The more advanced technology becomes, the harder it is to deceive people. Forget achieving the technological level of Loren's previous life; just the development of something like the internet would make it impossible to completely erase the existence of the three Primordial Gods.
Even now, it's incredibly difficult for someone like Loren to learn information about them, let alone anyone else.
"What have you and Lilith been doing all this time?" 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
The moment Loren stepped out, he heard Naclis's question. It was very late, and they hadn't gone to sleep.
"Nothing much, just listened to her talk about some rather hidden matters."
"Hidden?"
"How hidden?"
Just as Naclis was pondering, Anna suddenly got excited.
"You can't know."
Loren said somewhat seriously. Even if the Perpetual Observer was harmless, the various Orthodox Gods would not let anyone who knew about the Primordial Gods go unpunished.
"Understood. You were talking about adult-only stuff."
Anna immediately jumped to another conclusion. Before Loren could explain, the doorbell rang. A maid had brought the food.
"Food's here!"
Anna felt a surge of excitement. The others didn't have much appetite, including Loren. It was so late, and he didn't particularly like sweets either.
"Can I eat?"
Lilith stood timidly beside Loren, looking up at him as she asked.
"Go ahead."
Looking at her adorable expression, Loren patted her head.
To be honest, Loren did feel a bit sorry for Lilith. He had exchanged a single half-eaten pastry for so much from her.
Whether it was the World Card or this knowledge about the Primordial Gods, they were priceless treasures. Loren couldn't buy them with his entire fortune; even the Falling Star Merchant Guild couldn't acquire them. Yet, Loren got them in exchange for a bitten pastry.
Moreover, Lilith risked death by telling Loren these things. If the God of Night and Thunder detected it, Lilith would be dead without a doubt.
Previously, Loren had also forced some believers to say similar things, an attempt he made when sending Gwen to the battlefield to collect souls.
Ordinary believers would feel a gaze upon them after speaking, with a small chance of direct punishment. But if they understood what the Perpetual Observer truly was, punishment would be triggered 100% of the time. Divine Envoys would trigger punishment just by speaking.
However, the gods' surveillance on this matter isn't extremely strict. As long as a Shielding Spell is cast, such incidents can be prevented.
Simply hearing about it also wouldn't cause problems, but knowing too much could still lead to some trouble.
Lilith ate very elegantly, her movements slow, the complete opposite of Anna.
"Lilith, never speak of the content of our conversation inside."
Loren emphasized. The content of their talk was an absolute taboo, its danger level comparable to the true names of the Orthodox Gods.
"Mhm."
Lilith swallowed the food in her mouth before responding, appearing extremely ladylike.
"You two..."
Laila's expression changed slightly. She remembered the lesson Anna had given her earlier and had some unfortunate associations, but ultimately didn't say anything.
"Alright, I'm going to sleep first. There are matters to handle tomorrow. Ofemia still needs to deliver things to me, and there are guests to meet."
Loren was cautious enough. After all, Lilith was a vampire. He didn't mention his plan to meet the leader of the Bloodline Rebels.
...
Lying in bed, Loren pondered how he could repay Lilith. Her help had been significant, but Loren couldn't immediately think of a way to repay her.
Lilith was, in a sense, a kind of saint. She had no desires for anything else, only interested in food, even willing to exchange Observer Tarot cards for a bite to eat.
During their earlier chat, Loren also learned about Lilith's background. Apart from her previous teacher, Lilith had basically never interacted with anyone else. She had been alone from start to finish, only seeing other vampires when collecting her monthly subsistence allowance.
So Loren considered simply taking Lilith away, but that might not be good for her. Loren's home was in the Gedlan Kingdom, and the Gedlan Kingdom had a sun. Sunlight was a fatal thing for vampires.
Loren wasn't some naive do-gooder; he wouldn't do something like putting a cat in a microwave to keep it warm.
Perhaps Lilith could hide all day, but she had always lived in Uridia and had no habit of avoiding light. If she accidentally encountered sunlight, it would be over. A low-level vampire like her would be instantly killed by sunlight.
