MMA System: I Will Be Pound For Pound Goat-Chapter 709: Words to Remember
Chapter 709: Chapter 709: Words to Remember
The lights in the hall dimmed slightly, and the subtle hum of conversation quieted as the MC stepped forward.
He wore a crisp suit with a lapel flower to match the wedding colors, holding a wireless mic in one hand and a cue card in the other.
"Alright, ladies and gentlemen," he said with a wide smile, "if I can steal your attention for a few minutes, don’t worry, the food is still coming, I’d like to officially welcome you to this celebration of love, commitment, and clearly excellent taste in venue."
The crowd laughed lightly, and the MC continued.
"We’re gathered here not just to witness a wedding, but to celebrate the kind of bond that gives the rest of us a reason to believe in something more. So, let’s kick off what will be a night to remember, with some heartfelt, embarrassing, and hopefully not incriminating speeches."
He turned to the head table with a nod. "And who better to start us off than the man who’s been with the groom through it all, ladies and gentlemen, give it up for the best man, Joey."
There was a round of applause and a few cheers as Joey stood. He buttoned his jacket, cleared his throat once, and made his way up to the mic.
Damon gave him a look, a mix of warning and expectation.
Joey adjusted the mic and looked out over the room. "I’ve known Damon for a long time. And in that time, I’ve seen him in every state a man can be in, broke, bloody, stubborn, ridiculous, and somehow, still standing tall through it all."
That earned a laugh from some tables. Damon shook his head with a smirk.
"But in all those years," Joey continued, "I never saw him as happy, or as sure of himself, as when he started talking about Svetlana. And that says a lot. Because for Damon, trust doesn’t come easily. But with her? It wasn’t even a question. She walked into his life and everything shifted."
He looked at the couple and gave a smaller, warmer smile.
"I’ve never seen my friend more grounded, more honest, and more willing to grow than he is with you. Svetlana, you’re not just marrying a fighter, you’re marrying a man who fights hardest for the people he loves. And he’s lucky to have someone just as fierce in his corner."
Joey raised his glass. "To the Crosses. May your future be just like today, surrounded by love, a little loud, and unforgettable."
As he said that, many thought he was done. Joey looked around and added, "Well, that part of the speech was written by Damon," earning a wave of laughter from the crowd. "Now for my real speech—"
Damon laughed from the head table, shaking his head.
Joey paused, then raised his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, let’s not get us in trouble." He grinned and walked off the stage, returning to his seat with a few pats on the back from passing guests.
The atmosphere stayed warm, the laughter still lingering as the next part of the celebration prepared to unfold.
After Joey returned to his seat, the MC stepped up again, smiling as he glanced at the couple.
"Well, that was a great start, and a reminder that any speech involving Damon is a gamble. But now we’re moving on to a few more words from the people who know the bride and groom in a way no one else does. Let’s hear from the mothers, the mentors, and the ones who’ve walked with them through life." freewёbnoνel.com
He looked toward the front table. "First up, Macey, the bride’s mother."
Macey rose with grace, smoothing her dress before stepping forward. The room quieted again as she took the mic.
"Good evening, everyone," she said. "I’m Macey, proud mother of this beautiful woman over here."
She glanced at Svetlana and smiled.
"Watching her grow up has been a journey I can only describe as humbling. She’s always been determined, even when it meant stubbornness. Strong, even when she doubted herself. And so incredibly loving, even when she didn’t have the words for it. I’ve watched her become this steady, passionate person. And then I saw her fall in love with Damon."
Macey turned slightly, meeting Damon’s eyes.
"I’ll be honest. As a mother, you always wonder, will they be safe? Will they be valued? Will they be happy? And Damon, I can say without hesitation... yes. You’ve made her feel seen. And I see the way you look at her like she’s the whole world. That means more than I can say."
She stepped back, gave her daughter’s hand a squeeze, and returned to her seat.
The MC nodded. "Thank you, Macey. Now, we’ve got someone else who’s waited long enough. Ladies and gentlemen, Aoife, mother of the groom."
Aoife stood slowly, taking a breath as she reached the mic. Her voice came out steady, but with a thick Irish lilt that immediately caught the room’s attention.
"Right, I’ll not keep yeh long," she began, a soft smile on her lips. "I’m Aoife, Damon’s mammy, though he’ll pretend he’s too grown to still call me that."
Some laughter rose from a few tables. Damon looked down, already grinning.
"I raised this lad mostly on me own," she said, glancing at Damon. "An’ I’ll tell yeh now, he was no easy child. Stubborn as a mule, sharp-tongued, and always gettin’ into scraps he said he didn’t start. But he always had heart. Big one. Would’ve given the shirt off his back if he thought it’d help someone."
She paused, eyes softening as they turned to Svetlana.
"When he told me about you, love, I didn’t even have to meet yeh to know you were different. I could hear it. His voice had changed, sounded like he’d found his home, not just a person."
She sniffed once, but smiled through it.
"I’ll not get emotional, I promised myself. But just know this, pet, if he’s half the man to you that he’s been to me, you’ll be just grand. An’ Damon. ye picked a strong one. I see it in her eyes. Don’t mess it up."
That drew a louder round of laughter, even from Damon who covered his mouth trying to hide it.
Aoife raised her glass. "To love, to strength, and to always lookin’ after one another. Sláinte."
She gave a small nod, turned, and went back to her seat.
Next, the MC turned toward the back where Victor was already standing.
"Now... father of the bride, coach, and a man who probably intimidated every guy she’s ever dated, Victor."
Laughter followed as Victor walked up. He adjusted his cuff once, then leaned into the mic.
"I’ll keep it short. Mostly because if I talk too long, I’ll start giving advice no one asked for."
A few people chuckled.
"I’ve known Svetlana since the day we took her in and made her the cornerstone of our family. I taught her how to ride a bike, how to defend herself, and how to know her worth. And I’ve known Damon for a long time now, too. Trained with him. Talked with him. Watched him fight, not just in the cage, but in life."
Victor turned his head slightly to face them.
"What I admire most about Damon is not just his discipline, or his strength. It’s that he’s never let the world turn him cold. He found a way to stay kind. And when I saw how he looked at my daughter, I knew... she picked someone who sees her the way I always hoped someone would."
He stepped forward, shook Damon’s hand, and whispered, "You’re doing good, son." Then returned to his chair.
Finally, the MC gestured to Ashley, who stood from the other side of the head table. Her heels clicked lightly against the floor as she took the mic.
"Hi everyone. I’m Ashley, Svetlana’s oldest, loudest, and probably only friend."
There were a few grins from their side of the room.
"I’ve known Svet for years. I’ve seen her at her best, and her absolute worst, like ’karaoke on two glasses of wine’ worst. But I’ve also seen her do things most people couldn’t. Hold herself together when it counted. Push through when she didn’t have to. And open up, finally, to someone who deserved to know all of her."
She looked at Damon.
"You made her feel safe. And that’s the one thing she never asked for, but always needed. You made her laugh again. And as her friend... thank you. For showing up. For staying. For being the calm in the middle of her chaos."
Ashley raised her glass. "To the bride and groom, may your love be deep, your fights be short, and your secrets always shared before the group chat finds out."
The room laughed again, and the applause followed.
The MC returned one more time. "Let’s hear it for the people who shaped these two into who they are. And now, let’s keep this night going. The dance floor’s waiting. But first, let’s eat."
