Modern World Warlock-Chapter 259: The Azure Rebels’ Retaliation
On the western side of Novaria, inside the Onyx Cartel's territory, there was a small city called Drasphia, which had fallen wholly under the cartel's influence.
Most of the people in Drasphia were living in poverty, and the few that thrived worked directly under the cartel.
Netherius and Wolfram, whose spirits were possessing Darius and Ruben's dead bodies, were meeting inside a massive mansion on the outskirts of the city. There, they discussed the recent loss of their properties in the north.
After Netherius felt the connection with his Death Knight breaking, he deduced that Dante had been the one to kill him, as the necromancer knew that not many people from Earth would be strong enough to deal with him. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
Netherius wasn't particularly angry at the loss of his Death Knight and his hostages. However, when he received notice that his necrotic reactor had been destroyed, the necromancer was indignant.
The only way that the Jade Dragons could've found their secret laboratory in the mountains was by hacking into the Azure Rebels' database, which was protected by Spook, their own hacker.
When Netherius spoke with Spook and asked him to investigate the leak, the hacker went through the rebels' database.
After he scrolled through the document that Trinity had downloaded, Spook noticed it was locked behind different passwords and firewalls, as always.
The hacker checked the database logs to see if there had been any changes to the documents recently. However, the logs had been deleted, showing no activity for months.
Spook theorized that Trinity had managed to break into the document and then locked it again to erase her digital footprints. Still, he believed that it shouldn't have been that simple for Trinity to break.
Netherius was cunning, and after hearing Spook's explanation on the phone, he deduced that the rebels were betraying them.
The necromancer was no stranger to betrayal. As someone who always took what he wanted by force and threats, treachery was something he had experienced multiple times.
While he knew that the Azure Rebels would seek revenge against him one day, he wasn't expecting it to happen so early. Nonetheless, Netherius seemed excited instead of angry.
"That necrotic reactor was key to your plan, was it not?" Wolfram asked, looking disinterested in the matter.
"It was important… Regardless, we already developed the weapons…" Netherius replied with a smirk.
The whole purpose of the energy orb that was being kept in the Alanigan Mountains was to develop necrotic weapons that could kill and turn the victims into undead.
The weapons' blueprints and prototypes were complete, so all they needed to do was gather their own scientists and reproduce them.
"Still, I cannot allow such blatant treachery… I suppose I'll snap my fingers," Netherius continued, thinking about activating the curse on the rebels that would light them up on fire.
Suddenly, seconds before he could act, he felt a shock and heard a loud sound as if a thin glass panel had shattered around him.
Netherius widened his eyes momentarily in surprise, and after a few seconds, he began chuckling, slowly increasing the volume of his laugh.
Wolfram stared at his companion, unamused but curious as to why the man seemed so maniacally excited.
"That Hellslayer… He just dispelled all my curses, huh?" Netherius muttered, still chuckling.
"All of them? At once?" Wolfram inquired, looking more attentive than before.
"That man may be a warlock, but he possesses an absurd ability to use the soul of a combat priestess…" Netherius replied.
"Hoh? That's interesting…" Wolfram muttered.
Netherius was aware of Dante's story, maybe even more than his own friends, and he knew about the difficulties that the warlock had to go through during his time in hell while he was searching for his beloved.
Wolfram had heard the general version of the story of how Dante killed Satan, but the wizard was never interested in the rest of the ordeal—until that moment.
A warlock would've never been able to break the curse of a necromancer, but a combat priestess could easily do it.
After calming himself down, Netherius called Oskar Heller, the leader of the rebels, wanting to see what the man would use as an excuse.
"Oskar, it seems our deal is falling apart…" Netherius said.
"That necrotic core was quite difficult to create, you know?" The necromancer continued.
However, Oskar had a believable reason to be angry at the destruction of their secret lab, as they had lost dozens of vehicles, including the stealth B-2 aircraft, which was one of the most expensive planes in the world.
Moreover, Oskar also mentioned that all of his scientists and the android engineer who were present had died during the raid.
"Oskar, I know my curses have been broken," Netherius commented, leaving a few seconds of silence in the call.
"... What? All of them?" Oskar inquired, and his tone of voice sounded quite convincing to the necromancer.
"Hmmm, so you didn't know… Either way, you understand our deal ends here, right?" Netherius said, his voice deep and severe.
"I see… Finally," Oskar replied with confidence, slightly surprising the necromancer.
"Listen, Darius—Netherius, whoever you are. I promise I will make you regret the very notion of threatening us with your bullshit magic," Oskar continued.
"From now on, The Azure Rebels are at war with the Onyx Cartel!" He shouted, hanging up the call.
On Oskar's side, Alexander Spring had been listening to the call the entire time, as he was sitting right in front of the rebels' leader.
"That went much better than planned…" Alexander commented.
In truth, the Azure Rebels had given the Jade Dragons the information they needed in order to tamper with the cartel's plans. However, dispelling the curse was all Camille's idea, which was a very happy surprise for them.
Oskar and Alex were supposed to act angry and indignant at the loss of their B-2 stealth aircraft to deceive Netherius into believing that they had nothing to do with it. Nevertheless, after learning that the hostages they were trying to protect had already been saved, Oskar decided it was time to retaliate.
"We should call Camille…" Alexander said, prompting Oskar to nod in agreement.
