Mommy Wolf: Raise A Cub, Claimed By His Beast Daddy-Chapter 173: Is It Him? (I)
The palace was in a huge ruckus once again before dawn. All the soldiers were dispatched to sweep the entire palace and the city, sealing all the exits to make sure nobody would be able to leave the kingdom.
Despite the extensive search, however, no soldier was able to catch the convict—not even a single glimpse of her silhouette—as if she had escaped long before they sealed the entire kingdom, which was very unlikely unless the one who helped her was truly a capable beastman who could move at unbelievable speed.
Garou and General Pell waited for good news at the palace gate, but one battalion after another returned empty-handed, and the elephant general’s expression grew increasingly wary.
The last battalion captain reported his unfruitful search, which coincided with the arrival of dawn.
General Pell stared at the rising sun with Garou standing beside him and said, "Go to the Queen’s courtyard and inform Mistress Sisi of this, Garou. I’ll be in the military barrack if she calls for me. I’ll resign from my position once the Beast King returns."
"I don’t think you need to go to that extreme, General," Garou replied. "Our King still needs a capable general like you. At most, you’ll probably be tasked with managing a search party to find that convict, just like when he ordered Grishaw and Jeanne to form multiple search parties to find the little prince."
General Pell would be glad if that were the case. He would flip this forest upside down just to find that treacherous maid if it meant maintaining his position, because he truly didn’t want to relinquish his title.
Becoming a high-ranked general within the Beast Kingdom’s court was a great achievement that brought pride to his elephant tribe, and he preferred to keep it that way.
"I’ll inform Mistress Sisi. Please excuse me, General," Garou said as he turned to leave.
"Remember what I said, Garou," General Pell warned him. "Keep your distance from her if you want to keep your head. Our King will not be so kind if he caught you doing something indecent with the Mistress."
Once again, Garou was offended at being reminded like a child. All he truly wanted was to stay by Mistress Sisi’s side and be there if she ever needed him.
He trusted that Mistress Sisi would never cross the line, and he believed in his own self-control.
Watching Garou snort as he left, General Pell sighed. "That young man is too much for this old me. Do I really have to bury my own mentee in this palace one day?"
Sisi woke up groggily when her door was knocked on. She had only slept for about four hours after sentencing Leah to death.
She glanced at the door, waiting for Diane’s report.
"Mistress, Young General Garou is here to report something very... urgent. He’ll wait until you’re ready."
Sisi frowned.
What kind of urgent matter warranted waking her at dawn? Still, she obliged and got up.
She opened the door and saw Diane with a panther beastman kneeling beside her. Of course, she remembered Garou very well since she had saved him from execution just yesterday.
The panther beastman looked nervous. All he could do was stare at Sisi’s supple toes as she stepped out of her chamber barefoot.
He never expected himself to describe a toe as ’cute’, yet here he was, thinking how soft and delicate Mistress Sisi’s toes looked.
"Raise your head, Garou."
Garou obeyed immediately, and just like before, his heart began to race as Sisi looked down at him with her cold eyes.
"What urgent matter do you have that you had to wake me at dawn?" Sisi asked.
"Ah—" Garou snapped out of his daze after a while and quickly reported, "Mistress, the convict—Leah has escaped!"
"What?!" Sisi was instantly wide awake. "How could that be?! Wasn’t she locked in a jail cell?"
"She was, Mistress. But the two prison wardens were murdered, and the attacker took Leah with him," Garou continued. "I believe that person must be very powerful, since he punched through their metal breastplates and crushed their hearts for instant kills."
"Did they not fight back?"
"After examining the corpses, I believe there was little to no retaliation," Garou replied. "This man is a powerful beastman who can move fast and strike hard. Possibly similar to our King, though I don’t think it was him who did it."
Sisi was stunned. The prison wardens were elite soldiers trained by powerful beastmen generals; it was impossible for them not to resist at all.
Her mind immediately went to one man who could strike fast and hard—Marik.
She remembered watching Marik teach Jojo how to hunt larger prey. He was incredibly strong—so strong that she once thought he was the strongest beastman in the Roc Forest, until she met Kael.
If Kael didn’t exist, Marik would undoubtedly hold that title and probably became the Beast King instead.
Despite his large frame, Marik moved so fast that Sisi’s eyes could barely follow him. His strike was powerful enough to kill an adult deer with a single punch.
But surely the one who helped Leah escape couldn’t be Marik, right? He should be deep within the Jing Forest to the east, hopefully living his life freely without thinking about her or Jojo anymore.
’But what if it is him?’ Sisi wondered. ’If he wants revenge on Kael... and maybe even on me and Jojo for sending him away...’
She shook her head lightly.
’No. That’s impossible. He genuinely loved Jojo like his own son. He wouldn’t hurt Jojo just to take revenge on his father, because Jojo’s happiness is everything for us, right?’
Still, the unease lingered even after she tried to convince herself. Because the only one who came to her mind was Marik.
Why would Marik help a woman who harmed Jojo and almost killed him?
Sisi couldn’t make sense of it, and Garou noticed the worry on her face.
