Chapter 53: Why

Raul POV.

After everything was over, we returned to the academy.

The professors arrived at the worst moment, of course.

The classic otome or fantasy story of professors showing up last.

In this exam, 230 students died, and there were 1000+ who participated.

That’s a good statistic, at least for me.

Why didn’t I stop it?

No reason really, I just didn’t want.

Half of them died from the shockwaves of Lara and her team’s combined attacks on Andras anyway, or from the boulders tumbling down the destroyed mountain peak.

The demon god fanatics were responsible for at least half the remaining deaths.

Normally, people come here knowing they might die.

But even this was an unusually high number.

Rumors and dropouts were spreading among the students.

In the past, students quit because they couldn’t handle the heavy training.

But this time it was the academy’s fault.

The truly shocking thing was Andras’s death.

[Hero killed the No. 63rd demon.]

[Harbingers of darkness have arrived.]

[All empires pledge full support to the academy.]

Headlines like that were everywhere, but what shocked me were the things being said about me on the forums.

[Thread: Could the Entity have killed Andras!?

For some reason, the only thing left of Andras’s remains is a single skeleton. This raises suspicion that the Entity did it because supposedly there wasn’t a single piece of flesh left on the body, and that’s technically impossible...

A friend at the academy confirmed it.

Why are the empires staying silent about the Entity?

Isn’t this just stealing the Entity’s achievement and giving it to the hero?

Worship the Entity!!!

Speculation about me is everywhere.

But they can’t prove it, and they never will.

In this world, aside from the gods, no one who knows my identity would dare speak it...

If they did, I’d erase them and turn them into basketballs, and I wouldn’t hold back from slam-dunking them.

Actually, that would make a pretty crazy anime: I pissed off a god, got turned into a basketball, and went on adventures with him.

Seriously, dude, the naming sense of the Japanese in my old world was worse than my dog’s.

The vital thing right now is the unconscious Artemis sleeping in my bed.

Looking at her makes me angry.

This girl put herself in danger for Lara.

Her eyes are open, staring at the ceiling.

"Why did you do it?" I asked, head bowed because I couldn’t look at her face.

She suffered backlash from interfering with fate and now can’t move a single muscle; the only thing that works is her mouth, but she refuses to speak.

"Do you have any idea how worried you made me? Why would you do this for some human girl? Didn’t you use to look down on them... didn’t even Atalanta, whom you loved so much, face a pathetic fate?"

Gabriel stepped out of me wearing pajamas: "You’re being too harsh on her, Raul."

"I’m worried about her, Gabriel, this idiot touched a fate, even Zeus wouldn’t dare touch..." but Gabriel sat on Artemis’s bed and ran her hand through her hair.

Gabriel sighed: "I know she’s your friend, but you’re still too harsh."

"Truth hurts. If I don’t tell my friend the truth to her face, she’ll never grow up." It really hurts me, too, but Artemis needs these words.

A real friend tells you the truth, not the one who licks your ass and abandons you on your bad day.

Gabriel looked into my eyes.

"No matter how right you are, you have your own problems too. What right do you have to advise while running from your own mistakes, archangel Gabriel? I saw how you looked at Andras.... he was your brother, but when he rebelled against God with Lucifer, you were sad, weren’t you? Wasn’t all that anger you showed the result of that?" I said.

Gabriel stood up quickly and stood in front of me: "Dare speak to me like that again, and I’ll use all my power to blow your head off."

"You don’t have the power for that," I said and stood up too, looking at the angel.

If she pushed any further, I wouldn’t hesitate to blow her head off; our relationship hasn’t even developed that far.

"BOTH OF YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTHS!!!" Artemis shouted, and her voice stopped us just before we fought.

Artemis’s voice was very hoarse.

If she could stand up, I’m sure she’d kick me in the balls: "You idiots.... Raul, I understand and appreciate you. But you have no right to say that. Gabriel, you’re running from the truth, too, you know it."

Finally, Artemis sighed: "But the important thing is, Raul, you’re just like me, that’s why I’m interested in you."

"Is this a confession?" I said

But Artemis laughed: "No. You’re incredibly narcissistic, but I don’t regret what I did for that girl, Lara, and I’m glad I got to see this side of you. If I hadn’t been injured, I wouldn’t have seen it."

"This person is unbelievably intense, so I understand you, Artemis." Gabriel was still in front of me, smirking at my face.

I gave up, women are the most incomprehensible things in existence: "Anyway, get well soon, Artemis," I said and walked out the door.

Gabriel returned to my soul.

The maids in the mansion escorted me to the guest room.

When I entered, a few people were sitting there: Victoria, Bella, Lara....

What kind of combination is this?

I slowly sat across from them: "Hope you’re all doing well."

But Bella was angry and slammed the table in front of me: "bullshit, Raul, you’re a 6th-tier magic swordsman. Why didn’t you save Lady Victoria!!" she was yelling.

Lara held Bella’s hand and looked like she wanted to burn me.

After all, Victoria had been injured, and she blamed me.

An unexpected move from Bella: "Bella, Raul helped us...."

Then Lara looked at me like she was seeking confirmation, but I narrowed my eyes: "Yes, and Victoria saw it."

I know her future-sight ability, so she must have seen what I did beforehand. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

"Yes, I saw it, Artemis helped us too... she’s sick right now, I hope you’re not too harsh on her, Raul." Victoria bowed her head slightly.

When Bella sat down, her eyes were still on me, but she had calmed: "You could have saved everyone there. Why didn’t you intervene?" Lara spoke in a low voice, but no one else said anything.

"Yes, smear campaigns about you have already started," Bella said. She was worried for me, too.

I slowly smirked: "What can they do? Let them hate me all they want, but if I wasn’t there, it wouldn’t be 230 students dead, it would be 700."

Lara fell silent: "Thank you."

Bella put her hand on Lara’s shoulder: "No, you don’t need to thank him, as the strong one, it was his responsibility."

"What nonsense are you talking, Bella?" I said and spat on the floor.

Everyone looked shocked at my behavior.

Bella looked into my eyes: "As the strong one, isn’t it your responsibility to protect the weak there?"

"No, it isn’t. Why would I care if they die? Every day, thousands or more people die. Why should I grieve for 200 who died in front of me?" I was angry.

For the first time, Bella had crossed the line.

"Raul, your perspective is rationally correct but emotionally lacking," Victoria said.

Bella looked at Victoria: "But my lady, what Raul did doesn’t make it logical."

"You’re overstepping, Bella! Did I treat you too softly? Raul is no longer my butler, and you can’t give him orders. He doesn’t kill you because he values you. If it were someone else, he would have killed them," Victoria spat the truth.

But Bella seemed to understand that, at the academy, Raul had beaten everyone who messed with him, and even the student council didn’t touch him.

Even though the director stayed silent, Raul knew he was wrong, but his refusal to take responsibility drove her crazy.

"If someone you knew had died there would you still not care?" Bella asked calmly.

But I closed my eyes: "Impossible while I’m there, unless Lucifer himself came, there’s no problem. Artemis is under my protection, that’s proof too. She wore herself out, and the one at fault is right here."

My eyes looked at Lara, but tears were flowing from hers: "I’m sorry."

"Don’t apologize, you did what you could," Victoria said.

Bella nodded too

"Don’t be sorry, be better." It was pretty shameless, but it was the truth.

These deaths will trigger Lara’s future motivation and desire to grow stronger: "My lady, with your permission, I’m leaving."

Bella ran out of the room.

I hate this kind of behavior...

I’m not a drama character, damn it: "Now that she’s gone, you can speak, Lara"

"Where is Andras?" Lara raised her head, and Victoria listened carefully.

I sighed: "Right now, I’m torturing his soul; it’s in my hands," I said

And an aura filled the whole room, and Andras appeared.

Completely nailed through the hands and feet like Jesus Christ forming a cross.

"you you..."

"I wonder what torture method you’re using." Victoria looked at Andras with interest.

The aura was definitely much more oppressive.

The Andras they fought had at most 10% of his power, yet they were nearly destroyed.

Lara stood up and came in front of Andras and hit his body with all her strength:

"This is for the people who died."

"This is for everyone hurt because of you."

"This is for almost killing my friends."

"This is for Artemis."

"This is for me."

With every punch, the energy in Lara’s hands rose higher, and her eyes went mad, and Andras’s body was suffering internal bleeding from the blows.

Even though he was completely unconscious, Raul had increased the pain he felt.

The pain was so great that Andras couldn’t speak.

Lara’s face was covered in Andras’s blood she wiped it with the back of her hand.

Then I sent Andras back to subspace.

"That was merciless," I said, looking at Lara, but her eyes were dark.

Maybe she had too much burden, and proving my thought, she suddenly started crying again.

Victoria stroked Lara’s shoulder: "It’s over, Victoria, what’s done is done."

"With your permission, I want to leave," she said, and Lara ran out of the room.

Only Victoria and I remained; the atmosphere was weird: "Raul, you really are a strange person."

"Same to you."

Victoria smiled lightly: "But I love that strangeness and naturalness of yours."

"You’re embarrassing me, young lady," I said and chuckled lightly.

Victoria and I spent the night drinking wine like that.

(guys, you might wonder why Bella is acting like this, but Bella’s perspective comes a bit from the society of that world, like Uncle Ben’s last words in Spider-Man, there’s this "great power, great responsibility" logic injected into people, even in our world today, it’s one of the tricks the rich use to manipulate the poor. Lara is going through psychological trauma because, as the heroine, she feels responsible. If you want Gabriel’s backstory, let me know in the comments, and soon you’ll see Artemis’s past too. I’m trying to write as realistic a fantasy book as possible. Feel free to share your suggestions
