Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Seeking Him Out

Mr. Ainsworth was practically exploding with rage. Such a good marriage alliance, called off so easily. He felt like he was watching a fortune disappear right before his eyes.

He ordered Nora Ainsworth to call Leon Lynch, but once again, no one answered. When she tried again, the phone was turned off.

In just one night, things had taken a drastic turn. It made Nora Ainsworth wonder, ’Is it really just because of the news?’

’What else did Quentin Grant do?!’

At the thought, a chill shot through Nora Ainsworth’s heart. She sat there, feeling as if she’d been plunged into a cellar of ice. Snapping out of her daze, she finally stood up. "Mom, I’m going out to find Leon."

A trace of worry clouded Mrs. Ainsworth’s face. "Nora, Leon is probably just angry. Explain everything to him clearly. He’ll understand."

Nora Ainsworth managed a faint smile, then left the Ainsworth Residence with the chauffeur.

She searched many places again, but she wasn’t as lucky as she had been the night before. Leon Lynch had vanished without a trace.

She called his number many times, but his phone remained off.

In the end, she stood in a public phone booth, found Quentin Grant’s cell phone number, and dialed.

The sound of a depressing English song, his ringtone, flooded her ears. Then, he answered. "Hello."

Nora Ainsworth gripped the receiver tightly and whispered, "It’s me."

Quentin Grant’s voice was perfectly level. "What is it?"

"What did you tell Leon?" It took almost all of Nora Ainsworth’s strength just to ask the question.

"What did I tell him? Did you really think I’d have to lift a finger? Nora Ainsworth, you think far too highly of yourself. You’re nothing more than a woman I’ve used. Did you really think you’re that important to me?" he sneered. "If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up."

Without giving Nora Ainsworth a chance to reply, the cold BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP of the disconnected line echoed in her ear.

She quietly hung up the phone and walked out of the booth.

When she returned to the Ainsworth Family residence, Mrs. Ainsworth was nowhere to be seen. Mr. Ainsworth stared at her coldly. "I received an anonymous call. It said you offended a very important person, and you’re to go apologize to him personally. If he forgives you, the Lynch Family won’t press the issue. If he doesn’t, then you can pack your bags and get out. I won’t say it a third time!"

Hearing this, Nora Ainsworth understood instantly.

This was his way of torturing her.

"Where’s Mom?" Nora Ainsworth asked again.

"You can see your mother after you’ve taken care of this."

"Fine." She turned and stepped out of the living room again, running right into Nicholas Ainsworth on his way in.

"Where are you off to?"

"I have something I need to do." Nora Ainsworth was unaware of how ghastly her expression was.

"Do you really think you have any control over this? Or is it just like the rumors say?" The sarcasm in his voice made his feelings on the matter perfectly clear.

Nora Ainsworth said nothing. She straightened her spine and walked out of the Ainsworth Residence.

She arrived at Quentin Grant’s villa and tried to use her key to open the door, but it wouldn’t turn.

The lock had been changed.

Standing at the front gate, she rang the doorbell.

But no one answered.

She had no choice but to try calling Quentin Grant’s phone again. The call didn’t go through; the number was now restricted. She knew his phone blocked certain callers.

Nora Ainsworth waited until her legs went numb. She pressed the doorbell again, holding it down for a long time, until the door finally opened. A handsome, expressionless Man in Black looked at her. "Come in."

She scrambled inside.

Her feet were numb, but she kept her steps steady.

The Man in Black led her directly to the entrance of a pavilion.

The pavilion was enclosed by frosted glass, making it impossible to see inside.
