Mr. CEO, You Look Strangely Familiar-Chapter 54: Mrs. Ainsworth is Critically Ill
When they got outside, the driver, Zimmer, refused to take them to the hospital. No matter how much Nora Ainsworth pleaded, he wouldn’t agree. The sudden callousness made her realize just how cold and cruel the world could be.
She carried Mrs. Ainsworth on her back, running until she could hail a taxi to rush to the hospital.
After an examination, the doctor issued a critical condition notice and refused to admit her mother. In a panic, Nora Ainsworth dropped to her knees right in front of the doctor. ’In just a few hours, I’ve knelt twice... but for two different people.’
The doctor finally agreed to let them stay for a few days, but for no more than a week.
Nora Ainsworth gently stroked her mother’s unconscious face, her own heart clenching in pain.
They were placed in a cramped little hospital room where a nurse set Mrs. Ainsworth up with an IV of cardiac stimulants and hemostatic medicine.
As Nora Ainsworth sat by the hospital bed, she realized she didn’t have any money with her.
Just as she was about to go back for it, the driver, Zimmer, walked in with a cold expression, dragging two large suitcases.
"He said that inside are your and your mother’s clothes. There’s also some cash. Consider it money for your mother’s burial. You are no longer part of the Ainsworth Family. You’re on your own now."
Nora Ainsworth heard the door close. She opened one of the suitcases and found an envelope inside containing five thousand in cash.
Looking at the five thousand, a bitter feeling churned in Nora Ainsworth’s stomach. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
Two days later, Mrs. Ainsworth woke up.
She could still speak clearly, but she said very little and never mentioned a word about Nora Ainsworth’s biological father.
"Nora, is the reason you don’t want to marry Leon because you secretly have another boyfriend?"
Nora Ainsworth was peeling an apple. Her hand tensed, and the knife slipped, cutting her finger and drawing blood.
"Mom, why would you ask that?"
Mrs. Ainsworth continued, "I know from experience. I understand a young woman’s heart perfectly. Leon is such an outstanding man, yet you keep refusing him. It’s obvious you already have someone in your heart."
Nora Ainsworth didn’t know what to say. Bracing herself, she nodded. "Yes, Mom. I didn’t tell you because... his family isn’t very well-off."
Mrs. Ainsworth sighed. "I didn’t realize you were such a romantic. But as long as it’s what you truly want, I won’t say another word. I just hope you’ll bring him to meet me. I need to see him for myself before I can rest easy."
Seeing the hopeful look in her mother’s eyes, Nora Ainsworth agreed.
After leaving the hospital, she stood at the main entrance, unsure of where to go.
In this vast city, she had no friends she could turn to.
In the end, she called Chloe Marshall.
To her surprise, Chloe Marshall rushed over just a few minutes later.
And with her was Ethan Ellsworth.
Nora Ainsworth was surprised that Ethan Ellsworth, in full disguise, had come as well.
"I can’t believe this happened to your family."
Looking at him, Nora Ainsworth suddenly did something bold. She grabbed Ethan Ellsworth’s hand. "Please, can you do me a favor? I have no one else to ask."
Ethan Ellsworth was taken aback for a moment, but after she explained the reason, he immediately agreed.
Wearing his mask, he went into the hospital room. Nora Ainsworth and Chloe Marshall waited outside for half an hour before Ethan Ellsworth emerged, his expression grave.
"What did my mom say to you?"
"She just told me to treat you well. And from the looks of it... your mom doesn’t have much time left."
Nora Ainsworth nodded, her expression weary. "Thank you for helping me."
Ethan Ellsworth waved it off. "It was nothing. I have to get to an appearance, so I’ll be going now."
"Nora, hang in there. I’ll come see you after I get off work," Chloe Marshall said, her face etched with worry.
Nora Ainsworth turned her head and saw Quentin Grant standing a short distance behind her. His eyes, glistening with unshed tears, met hers. She quickly looked away. ’How could someone as busy as him come all the way out here personally?’
