Mr. CEO, You Look Strangely Familiar-Chapter 56: A Long-Buried Secret (Part 1)
Her figure gradually faded into the hazy night, but Leon Lynch’s gaze never left her.
A bitter pang gripped his heart. No one knew that when the scandal was raging, he had received a photograph—a picture of Nora Ainsworth’s back, her clothes soaking wet.
The photo showed no signs of being altered; it was definitely Nora Ainsworth.
And on her back, there was a man’s hand.
When he saw that photo, he knew in his heart that her reason for not marrying him was likely because her hands were tied, or perhaps, that man was the one she truly loved.
Though he was originally torn, he found himself unwilling to let go at this critical juncture. As long as she remained unmarried, he wouldn’t even consider giving up.
This wildly growing conviction startled even him. He had never been short of women, but he just couldn’t let go of her.
Almost no one knew that he had resorted to his own methods to get his mother and father to agree to the engagement in the first place. It was simply because he had been under her spell from the very beginning.
When he returned home, Mrs. Lynch was sitting on the sofa, her eyes wide with anger. "Did you go see that girl again?"
Leon Lynch sat down, his tone unchanged. "Mom, she’s your top candidate for a daughter-in-law. Calling her ’that girl’ is so unpleasant."
Hearing this, Mrs. Lynch lectured him in exasperation, "Leon, there are so many good women in Alveria for you to choose from. You
why are you so hung up on her? I think she’s just average. Besides her looks, she has nothing special to offer!"
Leon Lynch interlaced his fingers, his expression calm and composed. "Even if a goddess descended from the heavens, it wouldn’t matter if she didn’t catch my eye."
Mrs. Lynch was furious. "I think you’ve been bewitched! But even if you insist, your engagement to her is broken now. In a few days, I’m going to host a party and invite socialites from all over to our home. You will be there. You might just find someone you like."
He stood up. "Since you’re so keen on hosting it, Mom, you can be the one to preside over the selection. I don’t want any part of it."
"What kind of nonsense is that? That’s outrageous!" Mrs. Lynch twisted around and shouted at him.
Leon Lynch didn’t look back. ’To him, an adult who couldn’t make his own decisions was no different from a fool.’
Mrs. Lynch was fuming, but there was nothing she could do. Her son might seem indifferent to everything, but in reality, he was more meticulous than anyone.
’If anyone’s to blame, it’s that Nora Ainsworth. She’s a total siren,’ Mrs. Lynch thought. Thinking this, she suddenly felt that calling off the wedding had been absolutely the right decision. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
Mrs. Ainsworth’s condition was not optimistic. The doctor was administering medication as best he could, but some of it was ineffective.
Because of this, the doctor spoke to Nora Ainsworth specifically. "The patient’s condition has likely been developing for a long time without timely medical care. If it had been discovered earlier, a hysterectomy might have saved her, but that’s no longer possible now."
"Is there really no chance of extending her life?"
The doctor shook his head regretfully. "I’m sorry, the illness was discovered too late. To be honest, as an adopted daughter, the way you’ve cared for your mother... I think you’ve already done more than enough. Life and death are up to fate. My condolences."
Nora Ainsworth’s world spun, and she felt completely disoriented. "Doctor, I’m not her adopted daughter. I’m her biological daughter."
The doctor looked thoughtful. "But when I examined your mother, I found no signs that she had ever given birth. I’m rarely mistaken about such things."
Nora Ainsworth’s hands trembled uncontrollably. She had grown up without a father. If her mother wasn’t her biological mother, then how could she explain what she had overheard outside her mother’s bedroom that night? ’Could it be that her mother had lied?’
