Chapter 1044: Chapter 1044: It’s All Just a Routine

After Ann Vaughn got a taste of the sweet benefits, she would hum and act uncomfortable whenever she was slightly tired, using it as an excuse to escape the fate of being tossed and turned until dawn.

This trick worked like a charm every time.

But now... it backfired.

Facing Cyrus Hawthorne’s half-smiling eyes, Ann Vaughn instinctively swallowed and said awkwardly, "Well, you know, a woman’s words in a moment of panic can’t be taken seriously. You didn’t really believe it, did you..."

"Yes, I did." Cyrus narrowed his eyes, his warm fingertips lightly brushing over Ann Vaughn’s rosy lips, his voice filled with endless amusement, "I’ll let you off tonight, but we’ll settle this later."

Imagining the miserable future that awaited her, Ann Vaughn almost blacked out.

"I didn’t even make a big mistake, and I wasn’t even angry after you ignored me for two days! Cyrus Hawthorne, you can’t be such a domineering tyrant!"

"Well said, but no reward."

"..."

Gritting her teeth and glaring at Cyrus until he went into the closet, Ann Vaughn lifted the quilt and lay back in bed, biting the corner of the blanket as wide tears poured from her heart.

If I had known, I wouldn’t have gone downstairs to make peace!

Peace for what?!

If Cyrus Hawthorne were truly angry with her, he should have kicked her out. How could he tolerate her buzzing around him??

It’s all a trap!!

With regret and frustration overflowing from her heart, Ann Vaughn finally fell asleep, even dreaming about how she shouldn’t have compromised and said those words.

Early the next morning.

Ann Vaughn woke up quite early, carefully got out of bed, and went to the bathroom to freshen up.

When she came out, she saw Susie Sommers already awake, sitting on the edge of the bed with her hands covering her abdomen, her head slightly lowered, looking a bit forlorn.

"Susie, morning." Ann Vaughn walked over and sat beside her, glancing at where Susie had placed her hands, involuntarily pursing her red lips.

She felt like Susie might be considering...

It took Susie a while to come back to her senses. Seeing Ann Vaughn look at her with concern, she pretended not to know, asking, "What’s wrong? Is there something on my face?"

Ann Vaughn shook her head slightly, "No, it’s just your expression... it seems like you’ve made a decision."

No matter how well she tried to hide it, the struggle and determination in her eyes did not escape Ann Vaughn.

Susie’s smile faded a bit, "Of course, Ann knows me well."

"Ever since I found out I was pregnant, I’ve been contemplating whether to keep the baby or not." Susie placed her phone aside and straightened up slightly, as if doing so would give her more confidence.

"What do you want to do?" Ann Vaughn asked, eyeing the phone.

"While I still haven’t softened, I think I shouldn’t keep the baby." Susie turned her head, her expression unclear, "If I wait any longer, I fear I won’t be able to let go so easily."

This answer wasn’t surprising to Ann, yet her heart ached.

She opened her mouth, intending to tell Susie that Julian Master Moore had called last night to ask about her and that he hadn’t married Letitia Chambers yet.

But when the words were at the tip of her tongue, she didn’t know how to say it.

Julian hadn’t married Letitia yet, but he also hadn’t broken off their engagement.

Julian called to check on Susie, but saying he was thinking of her, or liked her, might even love her, seemed too far-fetched.

Sharing this with Susie would only burden her more without any real help.

"What if Julian has been secretly caring for you, without you knowing, how would you feel?" After much deliberation, Ann chose a middle ground to ask Susie.

Susie’s expression remained calm, "If a man with a fiancée still shows concern for another woman, if I were his fiancée, I would be livid."

Even if she was the one being comforted, she didn’t feel touched.

Only ridiculousness remained.

Ann read the answer in her eyes and chose not to continue, instead asking, "Is there anything I can do for you?"

"I’ve troubled you enough; I want to walk this next part of the road on my own." Susie raised her face with a smile, but her eyes reddened, "Don’t worry, if I could be easily crushed by such minor issues, then I wouldn’t be Susie."

After talking with Ann, Susie left Number 8 and didn’t return to her apartment; no one knew where she went.

Ann looked at the empty bed for a long time, her teeth tightly biting her lower lip, her eyes reddening.

As her emotions began to collapse, Ann’s face was turned to the other side, meeting Cyrus Hawthorne’s nearly gorgeous face.

"Why are your eyes red?"

"Susie snuck away without even saying goodbye." Ann’s lashes trembled, her voice filled with grievance.

Cyrus saw through her worry hidden beneath the grievance, gently rubbing the corner of her eye with a soothing voice, "She went to Red Queen Town. It’s peaceful there, and no one will know she’s there."

Ann raised her eyes, "How do you know? Was it your arrangement?"

"To prevent a crybaby from being like this." Cyrus pinched her cheek, "No one else can make you cry except for me."

Though he was a bit unhappy that Susie had taken Ann away last night, she was her most cherished friend, after all.

Ann’s anxiety vanished in an instant; she lunged forward, hugging Cyrus’s waist, "You’re so good! I shouldn’t have called you a tyrant last night!"

She decided to self-reflect for a moment!

Cyrus chuckled and wrapped his arms around her soft little body, leading her downstairs, "There’s nothing much at work today, so I can spend the day with you."

Hearing this from the workaholic’s mouth, Ann could scarcely believe it at first.

It wasn’t until she was sitting in the movie theater, all surrounded by the scent of popcorn and soda, that she finally felt the reality of the tyrant actually taking a day off.

Ann opened her mouth to catch the popcorn Cyrus fed her, then leaned over to whisper in his ear, "Why are we watching this suspense romance film? Aren’t horror films more fun?"

When choosing the movie, Ann had gone by ratings. Who could have known that despite its high score, the film’s plot would be so bland, nowhere near as intriguing as the horror film next door?

"Just for a change." Cyrus’s voice was indifferent.

Ann was puzzled, considering they had only watched two movies together, neither of which was a horror film. Where did this change of taste come from?

The movie’s plot had reached its climax, and the sudden twist immediately captured Ann’s attention.

Seeing that climactic scene, Ann finally understood why this movie had received such high ratings.
