Mr. Hawthorne, Your Wife Wants a Divorce Again-Chapter 1063: Unilateral Breakup
The medicine brewing in the yard was about to burn, and Echo Lynch still hadn’t appeared. Since the medicine was for asthma treatment, Ann Vaughn guessed it was meant for the person inside.
The person inside was coughing and wheezing severely, as if they might stop breathing at any moment. Ann Vaughn took it upon herself to pour the medicine into a bowl and place it at the room’s door. She knocked on the door before leaving.
Although her intentions were good, she knew it was right to apologize for handling someone else’s things, so Ann Vaughn sent a message to Echo Lynch.
Before her message could be sent, a message from Echo Lynch came in.
It was only two words.
[Thank you.]
Ann Vaughn gave a faint smile, replied, and then put away her phone.
"Who are you chatting with?" Cyrus Hawthorne’s deep and magnetic voice came from beside her.
Just hearing his voice made Ann Vaughn irritated, and she immediately huffed, "Are you checking up on me, ex-boyfriend?"
Cyrus Hawthorne’s brows furrowed slightly, and he looked at Ann Vaughn with a playful gaze, "Ex-boyfriend?"
"That’s right." Ann Vaughn, fueled by anger, stated boldly, "I’ve already unilaterally broken up with you, effective until midnight tonight!"
Evidently, Ann Vaughn hadn’t thought about the hardships she would face after midnight.
Back at number 8, while packing her things, Ann Vaughn realized the USB drive had been sitting untouched in her bag. After some thought, she got her computer and opened it to check.
She wanted to see what serious evidence Joyce Chancellor had on her that could cause her "utter ruin"...
Ann Vaughn was so absorbed in it that she didn’t notice when Cyrus Hawthorne came up behind her. Her fingers gripping the desk tightened, and her knuckles turned pale.
What did she see?
In the year XX, the Ark Project was initiated, listing members involved in the live experiment.
Third: Speisen’s special lecturer, Ann Vaughn...
After confirming three times that she hadn’t made a mistake, it was indeed her name up there. Ann Vaughn’s mind went blank, and all color drained from her face.
Had she really... once participated in live experiment research?!
That was something she had always been against, how could she have done it?!
Ann Vaughn’s mind was chaotic, instinctively wanting to defend herself, but faced with a document bearing her handwritten signature, any assumptions seemed powerless.
In her panic, a warm presence enveloped her from behind, pulling Ann Vaughn’s petite body into an embrace.
"There’s nothing to fear, believe in yourself." Cyrus Hawthorne gently rubbed the back of her neck, speaking in a calm tone.
"But if I really participated in this study, then those innocent lives lost unjustly are connected to me..." Ann Vaughn couldn’t hide her agitation and bit her lip, "Or maybe, the me before I lost my memory and the me after, aren’t the same person. If I really did those things, what should I do?"
This was a question that even she couldn’t give a definite answer to.
Even though most of her memory had returned, she still didn’t know what kind of person she used to be or what she’d done.
Cyrus Hawthorne reassured her with a kiss on the top of her head, his voice slow and certain: "You wouldn’t."
Ann Vaughn let out a soft sob, "...But how do you know I wouldn’t?"
It was less that Cyrus Hawthorne knew, and more that he believed in her.
Even though Cyrus Hawthorne knew nothing of what Ann Vaughn went through during those four years away.
But he believed she would never do anything against her own principles.
"Annie, don’t overthink it."
Seeing through her stubborn suspicion with a single glance, Ann Vaughn’s stubborn doubt miraculously faded, though she still felt unsettled, lowering her gaze and becoming lost in thought.
Cyrus Hawthorne quietly held her, while at the same time sending the document to Julian Ford, asking him to investigate the connection between Deep Blue Group and Zeus Base.
Afterwards, he hacked into Professor Rox’s lab system in K Country and quickly retrieved key data from the past four years, as well as Ann Vaughn’s personal information from when she joined, without leaving a trace.
Although Professor Rox was Ann Vaughn’s mentor, he might have recruited her to his laboratory with the initial intention of conducting this inhuman research.
Ann Vaughn left the job less than half a year after joining the lab.
Subsequently, Ann Vaughn’s actions suddenly became low-key; she gradually withdrew from the international center, working behind-the-scenes to solve virus problems for other countries.
If nothing happened during that time, it would be hard to believe.
"Wait!" Ann Vaughn suddenly noticed something on the computer screen, immediately sitting up and pointing to Professor Rox’s photo, saying, "I remember seeing this person somewhere..."
As she spoke, a flash of light crossed Ann Vaughn’s mind, "It was at Zeus Research Base! I remember now, this person is a core research member of the base!"
Cyrus Hawthorne’s eyes deepened as he gazed at her and asked, "You’ve been to Zeus Base before?"
"And it seems like it wasn’t just once." Ann Vaughn rubbed her temples, "But in all the memories related to the base, there was no mention of live experiments, only pharmaceuticals."
"The base is divided into two sides, A and B, one on the ground and the other hidden underground to avoid inspections." Cyrus Hawthorne explained solemnly, "What you saw was side B."
Moreover, the researchers on side B didn’t know about the other area of the base, and only core research members were aware of the entrance to side A.
"How could I have gotten involved with such a terrifying place..." Ann Vaughn murmured, confusion in her eyes.
No wonder Joyce Chancellor left this USB drive until the end; she probably intended for it to deal successive heavy blows to Ann Vaughn and leave her defeated.
But Joyce Chancellor miscalculated; she didn’t think she would be the first to fall at Ann Vaughn’s hands.
Ann Vaughn’s face grew more composed as she turned to Cyrus Hawthorne, saying, "Zeus Base has labeled me as the final sacrifice, always waiting for a chance to catch me alone and abduct me, but I can’t sit here passively any longer."
She couldn’t imagine how many people might have seen this document or if one day it would spread all over the world.
Ann Vaughn didn’t dare to imagine the possibility.
Because not everyone in this world is like Cyrus Hawthorne, willing to trust her unconditionally without limits.
Cyrus Hawthorne looked at her calmly, silent.
Ann Vaughn felt uneasy under his gaze, quickly adding, "We can’t just sit here doing nothing anymore."
Cyrus Hawthorne brushed a stray lock of hair from her cheek, saying calmly, "If the root of the problem lies there, that’s where we go to find the answers."
"You can’t be suggesting... infiltrating Zeus Base?!" Ann Vaughn’s eyes widened.
The base was tightly guarded inside and out, with checkpoints every three steps and sentries every five. The level of security made the chances of successfully infiltrating it nearly impossible.
