Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling is Multifaceted!-Chapter 271: Seraphina Redgrave Gravely Wounded
"Nathan Ayers, based on what you know, does Seraphina Redgrave have any other secret evidence about Veridian Isle?"
Miles Harrington asked as he walked.
Nathan Ayers did not respond, his mood complex as he stared at the gray-black corridor of the Directorate.
"You know I have many concerns in my heart. If she exposes everything she has, it could escalate internationally, causing enormous detriment to Country Z."
Miles Harrington tried to maintain steady tones, yet hints of worry peeked through.
The existence of Veridian Isle thrives on Country Z’s survival of the fittest policy. Though cruel, the reasoning holds.
But if its secrets were exposed, revealing Veridian Isle as an outcome of in-fighting among financial giants and its other sordid acts, the impact could shake the earth.
Between nations and financial powers, each has its own interests; none would hesitate to seize this chance to kick Country Z while it’s down, potentially even fanning the flames from behind.
Hearing this, Nathan Ayers finally spoke, "I don’t know either. She is always cautious in her actions; even if there is evidence, she wouldn’t let me know easily."
Moreover, it involves Veridian Isle; should it be leaked, she’s truly on a path to ruin.
"..."
"She only mentioned her wish to rebuild Veridian Isle; looking at her establishing The Defiance Society and entering The Law Council, I think she merely wants to fortify her wings and then amend laws to legitimize Veridian Isle. As for directly exposing its secrets, I don’t think she would do that," Nathan Ayers expressed his thoughts.
"Could it be because there isn’t any secret evidence regarding Veridian Isle?"
Miles Harrington speculated, "We cannot rule out the possibility she plans to wait until she’s stronger before presenting evidence. However, seeing that I have caught her, she has no way out and might or might not expose the evidence."
"..."
Nathan Ayers stayed silent.
"You are familiar with her; perhaps you could sound her out or advise her—less suffering would be beneficial," Miles Harrington sighed.
The two finally traversed the long corridor, then took the elevator to the lowest level of the Directorate, which housed the most nefarious prisoners.
Staff in the distinctive Directorate uniform respectfully opened the door for them.
It was a large cell, verging on oppressive with its pervasive blackness.
In the vast cell, long iron chains extended from each corner, fastening firmly to the neck and limbs of the person in the center.
Seraphina Redgrave lay in the center of the cell.
Her hairband was broken somewhere, and her long hair draped over her shoulders, with conspicuous bloodstains on her left shoulder, still actively bleeding, albeit less.
Whip marks were evident on her body, clothes torn by lashes revealing skin marred with terrifying bloodstains.
Her face was as pale as paper, seemingly devoid of life.
"Miss!"
Nathan Ayers strode forward, no less shocked by Seraphina Redgrave’s state.
Not even when Ethan Sterling brought Seraphina back from Veridian Isle was she this miserable.
Seraphina’s wounds stung Nathan Ayers’s eyes; veins on his forehead bulged as he turned to grip Miles Harrington’s collar, bellowing, "Miles Harrington, is this what you mean by letting her suffer less?"
How could he explain this to Young Master Sterling?
"Do you not understand the Directorate’s rules? It’s customary to break bones upon entry," Miles Harrington explained helplessly.
Not her physical bones, but her pride; first making her understand her surroundings, discouraging any concealment, and to divulge everything.
"But you clearly said..." Nathan Ayers struggled to swallow his anger.
Suddenly, the girl lying in the center opened her eyes, her eyelashes gently fluttering as her clear eyes looked at them, calmly watching.
Nathan Ayers met her gaze, fell silent, and his hand dropped powerless from Miles Harrington’s collar.
Miles Harrington was somewhat surprised; knowing the Directorate’s ruthless methods, in this place that leaves no trace, it’s uncommon not to cry after enduring torture, let alone maintain such clear-eyed composure, without screaming or shouting.
He raised an eyebrow at Nathan Ayers, "Did you try greasing some palms here?"
Nathan Ayers clenched his fists, his expression extremely grim.
A staff member approached to explain, "Mr. President, we were ineffective in our duties; this woman is rather skillful, not like other ordinary prisoners."
Aside from firing that shot earlier, they even released two hungry wolves to force her.
The result: not only did she manage to protect herself while being shackled, but she also resolved both wolves; one had its limbs broken and the other’s neck nearly twisted.
They were considering other methods to properly handle this woman when Miles Harrington arrived with Nathan Ayers.
"Your skills aren’t lacking?"
Miles Harrington looked at her in surprise; not surprised by the skills, considering surviving several years on Veridian Isle, but reaching this level was indeed unexpected.
Nathan Ayers squatted beside Seraphina Redgrave, looking at her with concern, "Miss, how do you feel now?"
Seraphina Redgrave shook her head, indicating she was temporarily unharmed.
She extended her arms with difficulty, propping herself up, sitting straight, and seemed defiantly to look at Miles Harrington, asking word by word, "Have you found out who the informant is?"
She only wanted to know if it was the person she suspected.
Miles Harrington didn’t anticipate this as her first question—not her begging nor confession, but inquiring about the informer.
Indeed intelligent.
"No," he shook his head.
"Ha, I thought The Presidential Palace had such capability, yet it couldn’t even locate this," Seraphina Redgrave said provocatively.
Miles Harrington felt irritation at her questioning, wanting to refute, but Seraphina Redgrave began negotiating, "Don’t touch The Defiance Society members; they know nothing. Tell those financial powers to back off."
"Preserving them is simple, but why should I do this?" Miles Harrington stared into her eyes, "You should know what I want, right?"
Seraphina Redgrave smirked, "Then tell me."
In the bleak cell, she remained composed as if negotiating business with the president rather than being imprisoned here.
"First, confess all your plans—whether already implemented or not, reveal everything. Second, expose all your accomplices except Ethan Sterling. Third, do you have secret evidence about Veridian Isle, and has any evidence been transferred abroad?"
Miles Harrington looked down upon Seraphina Redgrave, pausing before presenting the final condition, "Fourth, you must plead guilty and repent before the entire nation, admitting all you’ve said was fabricated, meant to lay the groundwork for your crimes, accepting punishment willingly."
Nathan Ayers stood by, listening in shock, unease written on his face as he looked at the frail Seraphina Redgrave.
