Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 777: Learning to Fight Back
Vanessa Sterling curled her pale lips into a smile and said, "No, my life isn’t worth much. Even if I died, it wouldn’t affect anyone. But if I could die together with that demon, I think that would be the value of my life."
"Silly girl, people should live for themselves. The world is so big, with many beautiful sights you haven’t seen yet. Life is inherently short; don’t be so reckless with yourself. Listen, I’ll take you away from here openly and honestly."
After finishing bandaging the wound, Miles Sterling left. Bianca Jennings didn’t know whether he was avoiding something or had come to realize something.
But she felt that Miles Sterling wasn’t beyond redemption yet.
She had treated many patients like this, people who were indeed suffering from internal struggles and torment.
Whether or not they could walk hand-in-hand was something they would have to decide for themselves in the future. Parting on good terms was actually their best possible ending, at least better than being locked in mutual destruction.
In the bar.
Cynthia Ramsey glanced worriedly at Miles Sterling, who was downing drink after drink.
Pouring another bottle into his empty glass, she asked, "What’s wrong? Did something unpleasant happen? You’ve got a wound on your head; don’t drink so much."
"Stop talking," Miles Sterling replied irritably, before grabbing the glass and downing the contents once again.
Cynthia Ramsey looked at Miles Sterling thoughtfully, guessing that it must be because of that girl named Vanessa.
Cynthia Ramsey didn’t know who Vanessa was, nor what she looked like. She only heard Miles Sterling mumble that name repeatedly when he was drunk.
How special must that girl be to occupy Miles Sterling’s thoughts?
They say Miles Sterling is promiscuous, swapping women more often than clothes. But no matter how many women come and go around him, the one occupying his heart was probably still that girl named Vanessa.
To be someone Miles Sterling loves but cannot have, Cynthia Ramsey was quite curious about what kind of person she might be.
Two days passed, and Miles Sterling found himself with nothing to do, feeling quite idle.
With plenty of time on his hands, he still didn’t want to return to the villa by the sea.
As if avoiding seeing Vanessa Sterling’s hateful expression towards him, he could continue to deceitfully fantasize.
Vanessa Sterling had changed greatly, surely influenced by Jasper Jones.
It must have been during that time Vanessa Sterling was affected by Jasper Jones, causing her current loss of control.
But the current situation only filled him with powerlessness.
He wanted to change the current relationship, even if it meant returning to the past. But now Vanessa Sterling was no longer the meek, submissive girl she once was.
Throwing the vase at him with almost no restraint, she seemed to genuinely wish to knock him dead.
Perhaps when she woke up in the hospital, her deepest regret was that the car had failed to run him over.
The more he thought, the more frustrated he felt, gripping the pen in his hand harder.
"Snap—"
The pen snapped in two, with the ink cartridge and spring burst out, the spring hitting his face.
The sudden pain jolted Miles Sterling back to reality, suddenly feeling that the pen was much like Vanessa Sterling.
The girl who used to curl up in a corner, trembling, constantly apologizing to him, had somehow learned to fight back.
If Bianca Jennings could truly help her forget everything from the past, perhaps he and she could start anew?
As long as there was no Quentin Sterling, no Jasper Jones, they wouldn’t repeat their mistakes.
Lost in thought, his phone rang from his pocket.
Seeing the caller ID, Miles Sterling’s brows instantly furrowed, hesitating to answer until the ringtone persisted.
Once the call connected, Wendy Jennings’s voice immediately came through: "Son, where have you been these days? Why didn’t you go to the date set up yesterday?"
Miles Sterling responded perfunctorily, "Busy."
Wendy Jennings: "Don’t fool me. I’ve asked your uncle, and the company hasn’t had much going on lately. Where are you now? The girl is planning to come over, you need to come back quickly."
Before Miles Sterling could find an excuse to refuse, Wendy Jennings added, "If you’re not back in twenty minutes, I’ll come find you at the office."
Miles Sterling understood his mother’s temperament well, and the thought of Wendy Jennings making a scene at work already gave him a headache.
But being forced into blind dates every few days was something he was utterly sick of.
After some thought, Miles Sterling called Cynthia Ramsey, bringing her back home with him.
The moment Wendy Jennings saw Cynthia Ramsey getting out of the car, her expression turned furious, and she yelled, "Why are you still alive, you jinx?! Son, why did you bring her back?!"
Miles Sterling casually introduced, "My girlfriend, Cynthia Ramsey."
"What?" Wendy Jennings’s shock was evident.
Cynthia Ramsey was momentarily stunned. Firstly, at the sudden outburst of scolding when she got out of the car; secondly, at how Miles Sterling introduced her.
Though she knew Miles Sterling probably wasn’t serious, she quickly adapted, politely smiling at Wendy Jennings and saying, "Hello, Auntie. I’m Cynthia Ramsey; you can call me Cynthia."
Realizing her mistake, Wendy Jennings refrained from continuing her scolding, but still didn’t show Cynthia Ramsey any warmth due to her resemblance to Vanessa Sterling.
Instead, she pulled Miles Sterling aside, saying, "Are you trying to infuriate me on purpose? That jinx hasn’t been dead long, and you’ve found a woman who looks just like her?"
Miles Sterling: "You were eager for me to have a girlfriend, yet when I find one, you pick flaws."
Wendy Jennings: "Can’t you find someone else? Why choose someone who looks like that jinx?"
With a somber expression, Miles Sterling said while walking into the house, "Regardless, none of my decisions will satisfy you. I’m not Quentin Sterling, so don’t judge me by his standards."
Wendy Jennings chased after Miles Sterling, but stopping short of Cynthia Ramsey, she turned to her, warning sternly, "You better behave when my son goes on his date! Don’t meddle!"
With these words, Cynthia Ramsey understood that Miles Sterling bought her along to deflect the date.
Yet, out of all the women Miles Sterling knows, he chose her, suggesting she held some minor significance to him.
But why did his mother seem particularly angry upon first seeing her?
Was it a case of mistaken identity?
Did she really look like someone else?
The girl named Vanessa, perhaps?
The odd requests Miles Sterling asked of her, all seeming like he wanted her to mimic another. And his drunken cries of "Vanessa", were they just an attempt to replace that girl with her?
Though it’s not entirely bad news.
At least she now had a reason for being, a value. That’s why Miles Sterling kept her around.
